Holy Crap!!!
I can play KOTOR.
Well, at least I don't get the black screen menu.
We'll see.

New beta drivers on nVidia's website.
Well? Is it playable?

?? I gets an error all the time when I tries to use FIX 2! Wrong language? How do I fix that?

Well, you could try to go in to microsofts webpage to try and find the one for the language that you have on your computer, so if it is a swedish computer, go to microsoft.se and browse, or go to google and google for WindowsXP-KB896256-v3-x86-SVE.exe for example.

I had no luck using all the other solutions - MS hotfix with reg change, nVidia's reg change from page 21 in driver doc, AMD driver 1.2.2.2, manually setting affinity.
After installing 84.12, my system is stable and I've had no problems with any games, although my current games list is a little different than most people's here.
Prime95-blend test stable after 10 hours
3DMark06 went from 4111 to 4164
KOTOR - plays great at 16x12, 4xAA, 8xAF and everything else max.
King Kong - (I won it, alright?) looks/plays great, no more crashes to desktop
Zoo Tycoon 2 - (I have kids) plays better and no crashes to desktop anymore
Fable - no difference, didn't have any problems before installing 84.12
Lego Star Wars - (uhh, for my kids) is smoother
Battle for Middle Earth 2 - looks/plays fantastic at 16x12, all settings at max, I didn't play this before installing 84.12 though.

X2 4400+
Asus A8N-SLI Premium
eVGA 7800 GT
Corsair TWINX2048-3200c2pt

I've read at least two people on the Steam forums (dual core and nvidia video card users) who report that the new 84.12 Beta drivers from Nvidia has seemed to fix their crashing issues. I say if a few more people can test it with Steam games or KOTR, etc. then it should be added to the faq (and the reg hack mentioned in step four can be removed)

Keep me informed on the driver, and I can adjust accordingly.

i'm having major problems

Fix #1 is ez and i'm 100% sure i did it correctly

i have a X2 3800+ and when i used it it would crash or something and i'd have to completely reformat my computer

Yes you have major problems - and this thread is not for major problems it's for GAMING PROBLEMS. Your ram is bad or configured wrong or your cpu is overheating or something. But this is the wrong thread for you.

If I'm not mistaken, his post indicates he didn't have any problems UNTIL he applied fix #1 to his computer...

his title is noobie, what do u expect

anyways, can anyone help me out? Fix #1 is pretty damn ez to follow but for some reason it crashes my computer

It might be a Cool N Quiet problem. Try just adding the /usepmtimer to the boot.ini rather than install the whole AMD driver.

i notice on Fix #1

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0 )partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partiti on(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /bootlogo /usepmtimer

mine already had /usepmtimer

last time i editted this file i had to completely reformat my hard drive :(

If you have problems, take out the /usepmtimer switch and don't touch anything else. You can try putting it back in if it doesn't fix the problem.

this is a shameless bump for a great thread. I know I used it when I got my opteron 165

ouch . . .too bad you didnt have to heh. i accidentally messed up that file and couldnt log back into my windows install, so you load your windows cd, boot up the install, go into repair mode, and then i cant remember if it was bootcfg or fixboot command but one of those defaults the boot configuration and twalah, its fixed. . .i really tried hard to find that cuz i didnt want to reinstall everything. . keep this noted so you dont have to again :D

find out for me!!! lol

i wanna know :)

haha sorry, far too lazy to pull out the windows cd, plus i cant know which one fixes the problem unless i corrupt the file again, and im not risking it

here it is...i've been looking for this thread...you guys cant make this a sticky, or make somekind of TUTorial concerning the same topic?

Do you need these fixes with the 64 bit edition of windows xp? I just got my x2 up and running last night. Havent played many games with it so far but WoW seems to run ok
I'm using x64 with C&Q disabled in BIOS, and haven't applied any of these. No probs. here.

it actually was a sticky until pretty recently, when the stickies got cleaned up a bit. not entirely sure why this one got unstuck..

now i dont know if im having the same problem as you guys. Here are the symptoms.

Especially in the games listed(or not):
NFS: MW
Rome Total War
CS:Source
Half life 2
BF2
UT 2004
Farcry etc etc. . basically any game with 3d graphics beyond dx8

Well after a few mins of game play the system will lock up. I dont get any crashes, but the screen freezes, and after 30 seconds of repeating sound bytes it returns (in SP games right where it left off) and usually there is some graphic corruption like missing textures or some anamoly in the distance that didn't get compiled right. I've tried all the fixes but none of them do the trick, so i was wondering if anyone knew if it could be something else, like a bad video card, power issues, god's smite?

then this should be restickied! :D

i just got my system setup but Im not sure if I need this, how do I know if I need this?

if you have dual core

have problems running games

I have dual so yes, Quake runs alittle sluggish at max and BF2 runs pretty smooth just cant stay connected to a server but I dont thinks thats amd's fualt

Not stay connected to a server is the result of a dual core problem.

uh that sounds like a networking/ISP problem to me, if its just with BF2 MAYBE the processor, but if it also happens in other online games/browsers its definitely a problem with your internet connection or bandwith.

Disconnections in Battlefield 2 can be fixed by setting processor Affinity for the bf2.exe process to limit its execution to only one core on the processor.

I had the exact same problem and was able to fix it with the little AffinitySet.cmd script that I wrote. My connections are now 100% stable to the same servers that I was getting disconnected from 10x a day!

If you experience weird freezes, crashes, disconnections, and other strange behavior from games and other CPU intensive applications make sure to set the Affinity for the process to limit its execution to only one core on the processor!!! I can't stress this enough and I can't believe that I have to keep on repeating this about Affinity setting.

I can run all my games just fine with the latest video drivers from Nvidia, the Microsoft hotfix that doesn't appear to do anything, and the Affinity script.

in the end it didnt help me at all. . .because it turned out that my video card was just incapable of running at the stock speeds EVGA sent it at. So i just underclocked my 7800GT by 10mhz and it runs fine, no more freezing or crashing.

Actually, I posted a poll asking everyone if they had unresolvable problems with their X2s and got no replies. So, this thread got unstickied. I think it should be stickied though for people buying new computers with X2s and have no idea gaming could be a problem on an X2.

I like the idea of knowing the details of how or why the different solutions work.

It seems like everyone involved is trying to put out their own solution to the dual core "problem" and it ends up screwing up everyone else's solution. Hence dual core game patches interfere with Nvidia drivers, etc. Nvidia video drivers have actually been decent since the 84.12 beta (which I guess is now official).

Jumped from 77.77 to 84.25 drivers after driver cleaning.

No CS:S or DOD:S issues present. System is listed on my sig.

84.25 is beta right? I'm so behind on my video drivers :). I don't even remember what I'm running anymore  .
