Drop is gone.

I went to Drop (Formerly Massdrop) today to look for a new keyboard only to find that they're gone. Upon further research I discovered that Corsair bought them a few years ago and just recently bailed. Sad times for Mechanical Keyboard lovers.

I have a mechanical keyboard from Logitech and one from Corsair - both are great. Sorry, a brand you liked faded away, but I think it's a great time for mechanical keyboard lovers! Happy to rediscover mechanical keyboards.

Interesting, yeah they must have kept it up towards the end of March I assume like the article says, because I was just on there not long ago and now it's completely gone. That said, they really narrowed what they offered over the years and didn't have the variety they used to have, it went all audio/kb stuff after a while and I think to its detriment- and even with those- it felt more and more abandoned, like a store with tons of empty shelves. While I don't have the info handy, I have heard from an acquaintance that they had some sketchy way they handled some KB collabs at one point too- not sure how impactful or exactly what that entailed. Maybe just business decision stuff. I did get a couple of neat audio products from there over the years though.

I don't think I had realized that Corsair had ever bought them but I'm not surprised.

That said, for most KB purchases I've gotten some specific ones from Keychron or Epomaker, or- for most of mine (variety of brands), MechanicalKeyboards.com. I think for KB enjoyers there's still plenty of options

Ah thats a shame , now i`m worried if anything happens to my precious HD6XX...

Any idea if Corsair has improved the resource wasting abomination iCUE? Looks like they've added onboard storage and macro execution which should be standard on all this stuff given the prices. My experience with the K95 was so-so, not bad but a lot of little issues weighing it down.

It wasn't just a brand; it was an all-in-one mechanical keyboard store that was always featuring new keyboards from different manufacturers, neat keycap designs, keyboard switches, aluminum keyboard case upgrades, exotic/hard to find headphones, etc.

Yeah, some time before they rebranded from Massdrop, they used to do EDC stuff--flashlights, knives, stuff like that, but that faded away at least 5-6 years ago.

One bummer is that they used to be a good way to get unusual keyboards like the Planck or Ergodoxes, and also custom keycap sets. I had bought several things from them but hadn't really since probably 2020 or so. I remember hearing at the time that Corsair bought them but I had forgotten all about them until this thread.

It's still not good. But it doesn't stop me from using their keyboards. I set them up how I want and save to onboard memory, then exit the program and disable autostart, and don't open it again unless I need to change something.

I always liked my K70s but I solved this problem by moving to QMK-based keyboards.

You can find some of their refurb stuff on ebay still.

Massdrop was cool, drop significantly less. I'll never get those matt3o susuwatari keycaps now which is a bummer.

Corsair keyboards have flaws but they're often the only ones or the first ones to have the features I want. So I reluctantly use them.

The software is annoying but it's not that big of a deal. It's like 10 minutes of pain a year. As long as I can set things up how I actually want it's ok because I rarely change anything.

I recently got the Corsair K70 Core and while the keys feel a little softer than I anticipated it’s been fine.
iCUE still chews up a good 200+ MB of ram though which is annoying and unfortunate….

Indeed. Going to the Drop website now just takes me to a page of shitty Corsair Fallout themed accessories. 😥 That's a shame.

I got my Massdrop HD6xx headphones via Massdrop (Massdrop version of the HD650's) there during the original build. $199.99 for these headphones in 2016 was an extraordinary deal for a great set of headphones.

It's seemingly just another shoe to drop in a series of options disappearing making life for enthusiasts more difficult and less affordable.

These are dark times.

Honestly re:Corsair, I'm kinda over that brand now. For a while they had a reputation that leaned more positive in my mind but in the past few years I've felt pretty "meh" on them in general

I haven't thought about drop since they changed from massdrop. I bought some knives, wall art and a bunch of ear buds from there over the years.

Oh yes, that iCUE software is some garbage. I won't go into details the problems I had with it, but don't install it?

I bought 3 or 4 inexpensive Glycine watches from them back in the day, still own them, but then one day I went to their site and all they were selling was Mechanical Keyboards/Custom Key toppers. I clicked around the site for like 15 minutes going "Wait they had a category for wrist watches...", took me a few and figured out.....not anymore. <shrug> I applaud them for surviving as long as they did selling, I guess, Headphones mostly and then just keyboards and custom key sets. I guess the worlds supply of "not already hot garbage" overproduced-stuff has finally dried up.

i just noticed that mine is beginning to fray... :( guess im screwed. (not that i know what difference that little fabric makes anyway...)

I bought replacements from Aliexpress and they are remarkably indistinguishable from the originals

I replaced my earpads and cables with ones for the HD650 off amazon.
All the parts are interchangable. They are basically HD650s with a plain band.

Same.

My replacementsd are about ready for replacement at this point too. I was going to do the same thing again.

Only downside is that the 3rd party ones kind of suck, and the official Sennheiser ones are grossly over-priced.

These are the ones I got last time:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002B4OKYU

At least they seem to have gotten a little bit cheaper. I paid about $60 for them last time.

I bought a nice longer braided cable and my ear pads are memory foam. I like them better than the originals.

I think I spent $60 for all of it though.

Man, that actually sucks more than I expected. Drop used to feel like a place where you could find something a bit different, not just another mass-market keyboard . Seeing it slowly narrow down and then just disappear hits harder than it should. Still, options aren’t gone, just more scattered now. Reminds me of how platforms like Phonexa evolve too, sometimes losing that original niche vibe along the way.
