So today I picked up my Droid, Car Dock, and Clock Dock. This thing is awesome. I know that reviewers have been real flaky when it comes tot he keyboard, but I don't mind it at all. I think with time I'll get better with it, and it's nice not having half the screen covered up when I type in landscape mode.
I picked up my accessories at our local VZW store with my 25% discount, then got the phone at BB for the instant rebate. After Reward Zone Coupons and gift cards I paid $30 out of pocket. I can't complain, now it's time to sell my iPhone to pay my ETF from AT&T and to get the wife a nice Christmas gift for being patient with her husband :D
Sorry not selling to forum members...so don't think I'm turning this into an I'm selling this or that thread.

Typing on mine as well. I still have my iphone 3GS active with ATT right now but I wanted to see which I like more. Haven't used a physical keyboard in a long time so this will definitely take some time to get used to but as my first android phone, I'm liking the droid right now immensly. Gonna take more than an hour to get a real feel but so far so good.

I really wanted the desk dock but everywhere is sold out around me :(

Any questions in comparison to the jesus...err the iphone, ask away.

michaelkahl, how does it compare to your hero in speed? for example, with flash turned off on the hero, which loads the same site faster? if they are both on wifi. I'm curious how much faster is the droid than the hero overall? have you tried bogging the droid down? after using it for awhile, have you noticing if its slowing down or what? do you miss the hero's senseUI?

for you and phobic, is the lack of pinch zooming in the browser a problem/annoyance? Also, I watched a video from Noah at phonedog demonstrating how long the lag is before you can take another picture. It looked worse than my iphone 2G. Do you have this same problem on yours? and I'm also curious if the droid has other areas where its abnormally slow.

Chiming in to say I got one as well. Was first in line at the Verizon store around 6:20am, all of five more people showed up between then and opening. Got the Droid and the Multimedia dock. I was pretty hesitant about the keyboard from all the online reviews, but after using it a bit this morning, I'm perfectly fine with it. I'm a tall guy, so I don't have the thinnest of fingers, and occasionally I'll hit two keys at once, but overall it's fine. And the D-Pad is actually a nice touch, as I'm one of those OCD grammar/spelling people, and it makes it a lot easier to go back and do corrections instead of having to try and hit my finger on the space between letters for where I want to correct.

The camera is alright, the reviews were dead on for how long it takes to snap a pic, but it's nothing I can't live with, and will probably improve with later software releases. The multimedia dock is pretty snazzy though, and pretty much perfect for what I wanted next to my bed.

Basically, I love it. It's perfect for the tech geek.

How is video on the Droid?

Fucking amazing quality.

I picked up mine this morning as well. I was returning the Rogue..so I was expecting to pay another $180+

Droid + Car charger = $0

I have no clue how that happened. The verizon rep just replied, "looks like today is your lucky day" and gave me the deal. I also still received the $100 rebate LOL. So I ended up buying the Car Dock and some screen protectors as well.

What an awesome way to start my morning off. :D

Although the Droid on Verizon doesn't have pinch to zoom right now, Android 2.0 does support it, so I feel that should be resolved soon. The European version of the Droid has pinch to zoom. Rumors say its an Apple patenting problem or something.

There are many awesome Android "developers" that would probably make a fix soon.

How is video on the Droid?

What kind of video? Web video or media ported over from my own files? I can't try the latter since I'm at work right now. Havent delved into youtube yet.

Actually, I've been more of a "tapper" on my iphone but I'll admit pinch zoom has it's uses. Luckily so far, I haven't missed it at all on the Droid. Browsing is a smidge slower on the Droid I've seen but it's way too close for me to tell right now. The screen though... sooo much better than the iPhone and that's just on resolution alone.

nice. btw, I bet the screen is nearly impossible to scratch, like the iphone's. you probably wont need those protectors.

I am more interested in media loaded onto the device. One review I read said that it was very hard to access the videos and get them to play.

Glad you're all enjoying your new Droids, but c'mon guys...

PICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My camera is at home. :(

But I'll post pics as soon as I get there. :)

I won't BS anyone, the camera is not usable right now. I'm confident that this will be corrected with software updates. I haven't tested video yet. As for load times compared to my Hero I can't compare directly. The phone was returned last Saturday. I can tell you that everything loads and renders much faster. There's not doubt about that.
Side swiping between panels is jerky, but not bad. Again, I think this will be fixed soon.
Guys / gals don't get me wrong, I mention these things because they are some of the negatives we all read about. However the phone still shines, web browsing is great, the navigation is great, the phone is constructed well, and the Verizon network makes this phone shine.
I will mention that when setting up my Facebook account it gave me three options; no sync, sync only current contacts (on the phone), or sync all contacts from facebook. I was scared that this would be another Pre experience where all 400 facebook contacts would sync to the phone. You have options, so it's great.
The contacts app is great to use, and I was worried about being spoiled by HTC's people app. I might like Google's contact app better personally, but that's preference.
I think I mentioned this earlier, but I did try out the Eris for about 20 minutes. When I returned to the Moto Droid it felt like being set free. The phone is simply that much faster and transitions into apps are that much smoother. This is just like going from my iPhone 3g to the 3gs, night and day. I wouldn't turn back to the Eris or any other Arm 11 based Android phone.
As requested here are some photos of my new toy :D

  • As stated above, the Droid renders much faster and Verizon's network seems much faster in my area.
  • I don't mind pinch/zoom not being there, especially when my 3g works!
  • There is noticeable lag between photos, but this is more than likely software and will be optimized in future upates.

BTW my iPhone hasn't worked on 3g in two days!!! I know the reason right now is that it can't get on 3g :D Unfortunately, others in my area have reported similar issues :(

I doubt it will disappoint. Seems I heard that Verizon may be looking at getting the HD2 as well??? That would nice to pair with a killer network :D
BTW my iPhone ear buds work flawlessly in stereo mode, unlike the Hero that forced them to mono.

And there's the pics. :D

I will agree with michaelkahl about what he said about 'being set free' but in my case, it pertains to the iPhone. Don't get me wrong, the iPhone is a very nice device and it excels at what it does but the Droid completely opens up my experiences. Granted, this is my first Android device so I may be a little behind but I love the sense of true multitasking. I've owned a phone with nearly every OS and manufacturer so I've played with a lot but the leap from iPhone OS to Android is fantastic.

It;s probably the newness so I'll try to save further judgment for when I've had the phone longer but as of now, the iPhone feels like a toy in comparison to the Droid. It's a true geeks phone (which is both bad and good for some people).

Go sans iphone for a couple days then go sans droid for 1. You will quickly recognize your preference.
I still prefered Android on the Hero over my 3GS, the functionality. However I couldn't justify two years with outdated hardware.

Just picked up a droid over the lunch hour. So far I am very impressed. I've only played with the nav app and it is very nice!

I hit the little microphone, said "Navigate to xxxxxxx", pressed a button to confirm that it heard me right, and away I went. Nav was accurate (was only a 7 mile trip). I was really surprised to see a picture of my house (google street view) show up when I got close!

So far I am getting used to using Android and figuring out how to navigate it. Setting up the exchange server was easier than it was on my WM6.5 phone. BTW, I am on the $30 data plan.

Keyboard is ok - could've been laid out a little better. The letters are a light tan color and the secondary functions are in gold. They are a bit too close in color, so it sometimes makes it hard to find what i am looking for - especially since I am used to other hardware keyboards. It's still great to have a keyboard and I find myself using it far more than the onscreen keyboard.

Haven't tried the camera yet, but never use it anyway.

Is there any t9 or anything like that? I don't mind qwerty texting but i'm still faster at the 9 key.

So I played w/ the Eris today. Better soft keyboard in portrait and pinch/zoom. WTF Verizoogle?

Mine should be here tomorrow, ordered w/ Saturday delivery. Can't freakin' wait, did a little browsing of this thread in store and the res + screen = good times indeed. I also noticed how incredibly clear and robust the speaker sounded when listening to Pandora. How this is possible in such a thin phone, I don't know. Also, keyboard is far from a deal breaker IMO. We'll see once I get more hands on w/ the device.

Overall, it felt really solid and...who cares what I think! Gimmie pics!! Razr, iPhone, G1, vs DROID side by side shot to see maximize thin factor! Editing a hardforum thread picture! Camera samples! Movies! Come on [H}, entertain me!

Ended up buying mine from newegg via verizon I think

http://www.cellstores.com/specialoffer.aspx?cid=35159_6164c2012a1140b8a887e062ac95ffce

Was $149.99 with a 2 year plan, no trade ins/new account. I am totally new to smart phones. Before this I just used junky cell phones that were just....phones. Paid for next day air, hopefully it gets here tomorrow.

I wasn't clear on this, does it have built in 16gb of storage and you can add a 32gb card or does it come with a 16gb card and you can swap it out with a 32gb card?

Comes with a 16Gb card pre-installed.

Also, next day air will give you monday delivery.. newegg doesn't ship for saturday delivery.

Got mine today also, it is unreal. I had a HTC touch pro, and I feel like I just came out of the dark age. lol

After using it all day, I do have a couple minor grips, all software based:

1.) Camera takes forever- this is weird, actually. It'll snap the pic in decent time, but then it freezes up for a few seconds saving it.
2.) It doesn't go into landscape mode on the home screen unless I slide out the keyboard- a very minor annoyance, nothing too serious.
3.) As far as I can tell, there's no way to create folders with the default email client, and no rules. I get a lot of work emails forwarded to my main email address, and my Inbox tends to get cluttered with them.
4.) The music player is very spartan- again, nothing that wasn't known before.

And that's it. That's all the gripes I have. And none of them are dealbreakers. I absolutely love the fact this works right out of the box with MediaMonkey- I was able to setup some auto-conversion rules to encode my lossless music into mp3 on the fly with MM, and send it right to the phone. No iTunes bullshit.
Locale is one of the most awesome apps ever, the browser is super speedy, especially on my school's wifi, the keyboard works great, there's no serious slowdown (yeah, switching between home screens is a little sluggish- but not bad at all), and lots of apps out there. Plus the sync options make everything great- all my phone contacts synced with my Facebook friends and were autoadded pictures, for example. It's just awesome. I love this thing so much. Especially how open it is. Definitely worth the money and added price per month for the data plan.

Now to just decide if I should get some sort of casing or cover or not...

congrats.... that looks amazing...

i want one... but am locked into my current ATT contract till early 2011.... bleh....

android looks like it will become the smartphone OS to beat ....

Played with one today, and it was nice, but definitely not for me at this time. Swapping from Sprint to Verizon would be an added $80/month that I would never try to justify. Loving the Eris too, moreso than the Hero I have with Sprint, just because of the proximity sensor.

:(

Ordered w/ Sat delivery yesterday about 4 hrs before the cut off, but still no tracking number. Boooo!

I'm on Verizon and purchased my first smartphone, a BlackBerry Tour about 25 days ago. I have loved it so far, but the Droid seems like it has so much more potential than the Tour! Right now I'm so tempted to switch them. Will head to my Verizon store tomorrow and check the Droid out.

I've fallen in love with the free turn-by-turn navigation with voice search!

Coming from someone that owned the Tour, it was an immensely frustrating device. If it wasn't a trackball issue, it was a screen problem. If the screen was fine, the call quality was muffled. Ignoring the missing WiFi, browsing on the device w/ BB, Bolt, Op Mini were just flat out not good times at all. Add in the archaic and boring OS and you have a recipe for sadness.

Just got off the phone w/ a pretty cool rep. He let me know that it didn't ship yesterday despite ordering Sat ON. Apparently, they're supposed to be pushed ahead of the line, but it didn't leave until 5:28, 28 minutes after the cutoff, haha. I told him it's alright, especially since I didn't have to pay for Sat shipping. Immediately, he busted out w/, "Now it's not! It's a DROID! So sorry this happened for you..."

Oh well, at least I have my new 360 to keep me busy. :D It's an arcade though so I need to go hunt down a HDD, headset, 12 mo live card, and the silly optical audio out dongle since it only came w/ standard AV.

Coming from the i760 to the Droid was like jumping from a PIII to a Core 2...phenomenal experience with only a few minor gripes. The biggest of which is a weedy vibrate...hard to feel it if its in my pocket.

Can I ask how are the organizational tools on the Droid? Compared even maybe to a BlackBerry's? Is there a voice recorder and are the tools useful or useless?

Picked mine up today. I'll just say that I'm loving every minute with this phone so far, but this is my first real dive into the smart phone world so it'd be hard to disappoint me. I went from rocking one of these to the Droid which is like going from a horse drawn carriage to a Veyron (long story of phones breaking and resorting to my backup's backup that I dug out of a box in storage). I couldn't take waiting for the Omnia II or word on the HTC Passion/HD2 release date any longer so I just went for it. It was a hard choice between the Droid and the sleeker keyboard-less Eris, but in the end I figured I wanted the faster processor and android 2.0 now over HTC's kickass interface, there will be roms for that later. I basically have no frame of reference beside my BB I use for work, but am completely blown away by how many times I've already found myself taking it out of my pocket to check football scores and do "smartphone stuff" while I was out around town today and how quickly it worked when I did. The voice search and commands work fantastically btw.

I didn't pick up the multimedia or car dock at the store because frankly the sales guy was a dick and I didn't want to pad his pockets with more commission. Anyone else here get either of those and have some feedback on if they are worth it? I think I'll eventually get a multimedia dock, but may wait for a 3rd party one to come out.

I did get a case for it but was pretty disappointed in the selection they had at the store. I wound up getting the "snap on leather" case you can also see online at verizonwireless. Word of warning to people who get that case: the bottom section of mine had a little extra rubberized material on the "snaps" towards the top around the volume rocker that rubbed up against the back of the screen when sliding. Made it much harder to slide the keyboard open. I resolved the issue with a little finesse and some high grit sand paper which worked like a charm and it's sliding with the best of them now.

I'll go ahead and ditto everyone else's opinion on the amazing screen quality, great speakerphone, slow/unusable camera (hopefully a software thing), and the fact that there are better keyboards out there. I also wish this were a global phone, it looks like there's room for a sim next to the microSD card, but I would likely barely make use of that. Few other minor quirks that will take a little getting used to but overall this thing rocks, didn't think something like it would ever see the light of day on Verizon's network. If anyone here has any specific questions about the phone that haven't already been answered feel free to ask.

EDIT: rusty12, The default app selection is pretty bare bones to be honest (might be a plus for the people who like to use their own stuff). No built in voice recorder that I could find. However, everything I've looked for so far has been in the marketplace somewhere, and most of it is nice and free including a voice memo app. Haven't tried out the calendar too much yet, but I find using the organizational tools a lot easier than my BB. Setting up my email accounts has been a cinch on the Droid where it was a pain in the ass on my BB. Here's a list of apps that came pre-loaded on mine:
Alarm Clock, Amazon MP3, Browser, Calculator, Calendar, Camera, Car Home, Contacts, Corporate Calendar, Email, Facebook, Gallery, Gmail, Maps, Market, Messaging, Music, Phone, Settings, GTalk, Visual VM, Voice Dialer, Voice Search, and YouTube.

Use the SKU LGENVTCAS

It is made for the ENvy touch , is felt lined and fits the Droid perfectly and only 15 to 20 dollars retail Here is a pic after google search. I have no idea about the vendor, but I use and sell the case via my internal Franchise distribution

Are you getting the Eris or Moto?
