This problem still exists in Windows 7 x64 and ran in to it last night again.

The ATI Cat driver install and uninstall fails, the installer extracts the files no problem, runs the actual installer file and you go through the first few steps, then the installer window just disappears and windows pops up an error saying the installer didn't finish correctly would you like to reinstall with recommended settings, which also fails.

I've narrowed it down to Visual Studio 2008 Express which you can download for free from www.asp.net

I think its component VS installs like Microsoft C++ redistribute that clashes with the installer, I've found posts about other people saying it's a C++ redist conflict.

Anyway I'm running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, with Visual Studio 2008 Express SP1, this is a really stupid problem to have, it needs to be fixed, I can't bloody well uninstall my whole development environment everytime I want to upgrade my drivers!

I've submitted a support ticket with Sapphire as they make my 5970 and I can't find anywhere on ATI/AMDs site to actually get feedback to them! Does anyone know how to get in touch with them?

I'm a .Net developer and have VS 2008 Pro Installed. The driver installer does fail every time for me but I just run it from the command line (ATISetup.exe -install -output screen).

5 minutes of googling would have solved your problem.

I did find that actually, I don't really think that's an acceptable solution to a problem that has been around so long, I want it aknowledged and fixed.

I'm a bit funny about what components get installed and where, what options I use etc.

The only thing I wouldn't want installed from the package would be the F@H client, I guess it just isn't a big deal for me.

just uninstall the F@H client after.. program doesnt do shit unless you manually start it the first time anyways..

Do some googling, there is a VSC distribution you need to install, i ran into the same problem but after i installed the vc++ distro it worked fine, i'll see if i can find the post about it here on the forums

That would be appreciated.

Still I'd like to get AMD/ATI to address this, it might be a rare bug but it's a pretty big problem not being able to install/uninstall drivers without messing around.

Cool, I've RDC back to my home PC which has the problem and I'm installing, I wont know if it's worked until I can get home to safely try and uninstall/reinstall.

Appreciate the help.

I had this issue on my Vista install, and if you let Windows do the "search for solutions" thing it will actually find one for this error. It has something to do with a version conflict on Microsoft's end.
