just found this nvidia driver comparison of the new drivers ... they look like a step forward, unlike AMD's *jab* *jab* :D

Article here

Disclaimer: I run a 6970 in my main rig so dont flame me

Looking at nothing other than raw numbers is exactly what is wrong with the industry.

Wow, I hate review sites that somehow manage to make a bar graph with just three bars completely unreadable. Why should I click on each and every one of the images to enlarge it when I have NO IDEA what the contents of the image are? Why can't they just show the image full-sized to begin with? You can bet I will never use that crappy site again.

And I agree, large performance gains from driver updates are pretty rare these days. Often fixes/optimizations for a game will make their way into driver releases before the game even goes gold. Instead, the reviewers and users should hold the industry responsible for making drivers more stable.

I didnt mind it ... I could easily scroll through and find the game or benchmark I wanted without being swamped with the other stuff.

Every driver release from AMD has similar performance increases. They are quite often bigger than these performance increases, so this thread is worthless.

how does that make this thread worthless?

and no AMD does not have bigger performance increases ...

Read their driver release notes once in a while.
My point is, this thread seems to serve simply as a 'hey look, nvidia update their drivers with performance increases, AMD don't, sucks to be me'.
Both nvidia and AMD have performance releases of a similar magnitude, every time they release a new driver. There's no reason to start a thread every time a new driver comes out is there? If it were inquiring about bugfixes, asking people how they got on with it then fair enough (but it would belong in the native nvidia section) but just reporting the release notes and having an unwarranted whine is, well, as I say, worthless, at least imo.

Hmm I run a 6970 so you can get off the nvidia kick ...

I did not start the thread for you, nor do I care how you really feel. I started the thread for people who have not seen the new drivers in action and would like to see what they have improved on before deciding whether or not to upgrade. I found it a very informative article if you are deciding whether or not to upgrade drivers. So I figured I would share for those people. Nowhere in here did I just report the release notes either ...

I posted what I did because it's being made out to be some landmark change that's a complete game-changer for what's worth and not worth buying. Graphics drivers from both sides are dynamic, and they always have been. The use of the phrase "up to" in these articles is also very important. These changes typically apply to specific cases, and are far from guaranteed benefits.

Look at the actual test results. Basically nothing has changed, nor would I expect it to.

Completely agree

Well I posted a link to the article itself. I can not help it that the first page of the article has the release notes on it for their tests.

Are you running stock UT436 or are you on the new DX9 or OpenGL renderers?

Edit:

Going to make this easy because I love the game.

Latest DX9 renderer:
http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/utd3d9r13.zip

Latest DX10/11 renderer:
http://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/files/d3d10drv-v23.zip

Latest OpenGL renderer:
http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/utglr37.zip

Latest DX8 renderer:
http://www.unrealtexture.com/UT/Downloads/Patches/D3D/utd3d8r14.zip

These will also allow you to use the S3TC textures which are much better than the stock ones.

I also suggest you look into the UTPG 451 patch and OpenAL audio renderer.

Properly updated UT should work flawlessly on modern hardware and OS's.

One thing I'm not sure about is surround/eyefinity. Has anyone tried it on UT with updated renderers?

See I would of went with Nvidia 460GTX, but from what I read it's had problems with the Intel P35 chipset, so that was a no go. What's the use with having all these performance upgrades if your not compatible or reliable enough.

sweet info there

Yeah the modularity of UT kicks ass.

Stuff like that is really what made me a big fan of Tim Sweeny & Epic.

Quake 3 / id / John Carmack had nothing on them.

Agreed 100%. Original UT is still among the best of the best when it comes to a FPS done right.

Played too Many like that and its why ill go after tactical shooter games every time.
Don't get me Wrong i still play the first UT from time to time and or even older then that here and their.

I just junked out on the run&gun stile so much its simply boring .

As well project realty for battlefield 2 looks good but i haven't tried it yet and i don't know what the player base is like .Probably not good sadly .Just something about being a none combatant {Insurgent Civilian Class} and the only weapons you get is a cell phone and rocks {that you can chuck at the enemy team} and their not allowed to shoot you or do anything vs you unless you try and steal some crap from their base {ammo\jeep\whatever} or something and or pull out your cell phone and or try some other bull shit your not allowed to do.

If they shoot you when their not allowed then that team takes a huge penalty for doing it.Your probably allowed to bitch at em too :D just to get on the other teams nerves even more \ spy on em all over the place.

and ya more or less whatever for that benchmark its not saying anything.

Although AMD may have taken a step back in performance I respect them for it. In the latest drivers 11.1 and Hotfix driver 11.1a they improved their image quality and removed alot of their degradations from the default image quality setting of quality. This gives better image quality but they lose about 5-10% performance depending on the App. They then squashed alot of bugs and got quite a few games running better. Some even 30% better with 4xAA. It's all in the release notes. I think they took the high road and that's why I wanted to chime in real quick and defend them.

I actually enjoy crazy high-speed FPS like UT/Quake more than I do tactical shooters like Battlefield/CoD etc. UT and UT04 were amazing games I played the hell out of, and the latter still features as a tournament game at our LANs from time to time. Enjoyed Quake 4 too but I seem to be in a relative minority there.

Re: 11.1a, I hadn't heard the image quality improvement argument. I'm tempted to install it to replace 10.12a, but I'm worried about encountering the screencorner bug, or worse, the BSODs that my friend gets with his 6850s...

{off topic sorry}
samuelmorris: tactical shooters like Battlefield/CoD etc
Rofl that's not tactical try Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield .Sorry just had to say something couldn't help my self.

They're tactical shooters, just not in the same sense. To say there are no tactics in proper games of CoD or even CSS is simply untrue.
I'm much more a fan of games like rainbow six than battlefield/COD. I wish they'd make more of them. Missing SWAT 4, R6Vegas and the likes...

Who needs 'modularity' when you have the full source code?

Because its nice to be able to take the great game as is and plug in new renderers and such to make the game run on modern systems without hassle especially editing code and recompiling.
