You've just matched all the numbers in the record breaking $340 million dollar Power Ball lottery....

Tell us how you'd realize your folding dreams. :D

X2 and Pentium Ds out the ying yang.... put alot of it in the bank, live(including the power bill) off the interest..... change the local climate due to excessive heat........Fold Server would get only hell of a workout :D

Keep on Folding!! For the [H]orde!!

Being a contractor, I'd build / donate a new computer lab at the local university, full of dual core optis, oc'd & folding 24/7. (they'd have to let me, since I just built/bought the damn things:D) Upgrade the cpus every 2 yrs, and donate the old units to local schools, where they finish their life folding w/ dora the explorer abc games running in the background.
Eventually putting out over 1million+ ppd......

At an estimated price of $5,500 per boxen, I'd go with quad xeons out the wazoo.. an estimated 50,000 boxes, thats 200,000 CPUs.. Put the addition 65 million in high interest savings/investment @ 3% annual interest minimum, works out to $162,500 per month ($3.25 per box per month) to cover energy+space cost (would probably buy a mortgage for a warehouse or similar facility)... This doesn't take consideration of Taxes though :( .. but I can dream! Note that IBM's bluegene supercluster is at 131,072 CPUs, so this would dwarf even that monster by almost 70,000 CPUs, plus make note that the CPUs in bluegene are at 1.9GHz each (If memory serves me correctly)...

I'd like it duly noted that ING Direct just increased the savings rate to 3.80%APY..... gotta love it.....

I'd go for:
Supermicro h8dce's for boards $370
Opteron 265s $750ish each
2gb corsair reg ecc $125 x2 sticks
fortron psu $100
video card 6200tc $50
case something cheap $40
total $2310/box, say $2500 for numbers' sake
That's a maximum of 136k machines, or 544k cores, or almost 1 petaherz  But say 100k, and then put 90 million in a savings account as kaleb suggested. Maybe you can get a volume discount?

Any way you look at it, I'd pretty much be paying AMD at least half of that 340 mil ;)

Hmmm.
x2 3800, MB, RAM, PSU, and HD ....... $500 (at that rate, I get eleven x2 boxen for each of your quad xeons!)
power for a month for such a rig.........$10

Let's see...that's 2000 machines per $1M, so let's make it an even 100,000 machines for $50M. That's 1M/month for electricity (that's with expensive electricity and an over-estimate of power consumed). I can see the Master Card commercial:

100,000 Dual-Core computers....$50 million
Power plant....$100 million
The look Vijay Pande's face (or OCAU's :p)...priceless

or

Finding a cure for cancer....priceless.
There are some things in life you can't buy. For everything else, there's the lottery.

With $340 million, I'd hire a company to custom build about 1,000 quad dual-core Opterons. With 8,000 cores each running F@H @ 2.2 GHz each, that'd be 17.6 THz of folding power, should be enough to rapidly move through the ranks and git 'r done on some WU's.

That's why I like my plan.....Build & Donate.....write the whole shebang off, AND someone else gets to pay the Electric bill while I rack up the points.

Put $300 Mill in a nice 12% bond, double my money every 6 yrs, roll it over 3 times.....have $2.4 Billion in 18 yrs :D

Just make sure that for your "gift terms and rules off acceptance" they cannot remove F@H.... otherwise.. they get them.. fresh install... no FTW for you

I would probably have to go with the dual core quad Opteron route. Sure, the inital cost is going to be hell, but the costs to power it in the long run would be a lot less than just about anything else right now. I'd also need to know how much my own nuclear reactor would cost. If I can get my own, I won't have to worry about power for the boxen and I could sell the excess to the power companies for a profit. :D That would mean more boxen for me.

I'd give money to F@H, have them make a CRAY compatible client.

And buy enough CRAY's to heat the north pole!

Don't you think just one is enough? :p

too bad he didn't say "clone Mrs. Moose"..... ;)

Moose, you're a bit late actually. I started on this project more than six years ago and didn't need $340 million to do it.

And just wait until I get Kyle to allow him to register. Damn rules about having to be at least 13 years old to have an account here. Sure, that's normally a good thing, but this once I think there should be an exception.

Now that is funny! Smoke, is that really your baby?

Yes, that is my son. That pic was taken when he was two weeks old. Incidentally, that was also the first night he slept all the way through. :D

I'm not completely joking when I say he's my clone. Compare pictures of me when I was his age and we are identical. It's been that way since the day he was born.

Beer bottles and all.
