So recently I have seen big price drops with the 7970/280/290, and was wondered if this had anything to do with people not doing mining anymore or because of Maxwell or because of something else?
 
Supply and Demand. Profits on mining have sunk to non profitable or are drastically cut, it depends on your electricity costs.

If you check the FS part of the forum you will notice that people are selling their hardware, well the people who were in it for a quick buck that is.
 
prices of video cards are always dropping, just depends on the demand and supply how fast, the prices have been quite high since the miners came into the picture but at this point it's really not worth mining bitcoins and all the other cryptocoins are not very popular

lol, seriously though, a combination of unsustainable mining with the prospect of warm rooms is making casual miners and farms cashing out sell all their shit so we're seeing the blowback
 
Prices are indeed coming down on the R9-290(x) cards. I was at Frys over the weekend. They had the ASUS R9290x two weeks ago for $899.99. Yesterday...the same card for $629.99.
 
yeah the top cards are still high, but everything else seems to be falling, someone said the 290s non x are selling for $350 on ebay
 
Give it a few more weeks, and prices will be below MSRP I bet. Lot of weak handed farmers are dumping their rigs because they can't mindlessly point at a multi-pool and expect to make a profit anymore. You actually have to have a brain and know what you're doing to make any money, even then it's a far cry from what it was a couple months ago. Gonna be glut of used cards on the market and retailers bogged down with oversupply of inventory.

Saw an XFX Double D cooler in a mailer (Tiger Direct?) for $439.99

My 7870 is getting a little long in the tooth at 1440p, but I'm still patiently waiting!

I've been seeing a lot of the 290s around 350-380 on ebay. I know they are used, but many are claiming they have only been used (mined) for a short time (1-2months). I think I am just going to get one of those.

Get one with a transferrable, serial warranty.
MSI / ASUS maybe. Sapphire asks for invoice.

Meh. Worked out for me. I Waited since December and got my 290X (in sig) for $599. Honestly I don't care to much about the 20 bucks. I have what I wanted ever since these bastards came out stock and hot. A brand spanking new 290x dc2@ $599 The performance I am getting is excellent. Possibly unbeatable at this price point. (not sure) I can get 1100+ on the core and 5800+ on the memory without touching the power settings in gpu tweak. I haven't tried any higher than 1110/5820 in crysis 3/3d mark yet but I'm testing slowly at each new clock bump. Might as well make the fun last :p I new it wasn't going to happen but the only thing that would have made me this happy is if Powercolor made a 290X based off their Vortex II design I had on my 7870 ghz edition. I know that a lot of them were defective but I got lucky. I don't think they were all defective as much as PC just didn't test the OC's on the VII's My buddy has the same 7870 and it's fine but when he has it at the stock OC of 1150 on the core it is unstable unless he pumps up the power a little bit. But at the stock clocks it's fine at 0% in CCC. Sorry to get off topic I just really loved that cooler and it's physically adjustable fans.

Saw this coming a long time ago. The market is about to be flooded with used and abused cards that are next to worthless.
 
Should be interesting to see how it affects other prices... Used Nvidia cards, retailers, etc.
Although it would have to be a massive offloading all at once. Right now 280x's are going around $250 which is just pretty standard for a used card considering MSRP is $299.

It'll start mattering if/when they drop below $200.
 
single 280x is pretty good for up to 1080p so i think that satisfies the market fairly well for now, and $250 is a good price, everything above that is just a rich kids playground

People need to start looking at minimum FPS more closely.
I game at 1600x900 and my 280x isn't enough for it, going to replace it as soon as the new cards launch.

Running games maxed out with AA and I'm not even close to 60fps. Can't imagine how bad 1080p would be. The GPU is showing its age.

More than $250 is "rich kid's playground"? I had $300 GPUs while I was in college, it's called a job :rolleyes:

1080p60 with fully maxed graphics and 4x or higher AA is too much even for a single r9 290... :D
But now with a r9 290 x2 crossfire I can get 60fps pretty much everywhere (except when I'm CPU-limited of course) at 1080p, so I'm pretty satisfied. :D
Costed me over 700€ ($900) in GPUs, though... :D

Job's are scarcer + wages aren't going up much if at all + cost of living is still rising at a decent pace = not only do people in general have less money now but they'll have even less in the future to spend on stuff.

I think that's a bit of an exaggeration. 1920x1080 will require less AA too, so its not so bad. I don't use any because 9.8/10 times there is zero need to at 2560x1440. Also, you should try overclocking that i5. The lower the res, the more the gpu has to wait on the cpu.

Possibly, maybe I just expect too much. I paid $220 for my 5870 in 2010 and comparatively I was much more impressed with it (at the time) than my current $300+ 280x.

I feel like whenever I buy a new graphics card it needs to be able to max out previous games at 60fps otherwise, why bother? It's just a bad sign for the future.
Judging by the card's current performance, I won't entertain the idea of keeping it for more than a year. I feel like it has that much juice left in it, but the idea of keeping it for 2-3 years for normal progression scares me.

IMO performance-wise it's a $250 card. I realize 7970's have been lower than that before. Considering its age, probably closer to $199.
Same goes for the GTX 770.

That's why mining exists to allow you to pay back the GPUs within a couple of months. :D

Well, you went from the top 5 series card to a mid 7 series. There's only a 5-10% increase in performance from the 5870 to 7870. And yeah, cards are more expensive when you look at 5870 to 7870. I think the r9 290 at 399 is pretty good though. Finally hitting MSRP on occasion now.

Because clearly being a billion is required to own a high end GPU, rather than just budgeting and prioritizing how you spend your money.
 
Just saw a MSI 290X for 349.99 buy it now on Ebay.... They had 2 of them. Might still be there right now.

280x is a 7970 GHz, it's about twice as fast as my 5870.
 
Again Asus DCII was up on the egg the yesterday. Started at $479 and within 30 mins, shot up to $499 as usual.
