Dragon Age Origins discussion...

And totally new conversation portions for the entire game for him, and he's an active party member in the banter, and changes several portions if you have him with you, etc. I did my first playthrough without him, and it was ~very~ different with him in the party on the second trip.

WK was fun just for the boss fight, but I wouldn't have paid for it, but stone prisoner? Absolutely worth it.

To each their own, but for me I want extra playtime - I'm glad that party banter has made a return, but I don't want to pay for more of it. As for changing portions of the game - it's fine if you have Shale in the party, otherwise you miss out. The whole game can and does work this way, but with Stone Prisoner there isn't enough base content imo. I followed her dialogue and took her into <x>, but I found her lack of stamina problematic (didn't have the stamina pots mod at the time). Her footsteps annoy me anyway, so once that part was done she was out. I wish I could buy some pigeons to leave at camp :)

Dwarven ending, Elves so far are pretty different (he has a lot to say in their camp), he changes convo choices with people in Denerim, if you take her to rescue the queen hilarity ensues, etc. Just bring her along (and yes, I know I fuxor the pronouns a lot) in lots of places and it's HILARIOUS.

And stam - stoneheart, fully upgraded, and she's an uber tank that almost never runs out.

I decided to skip getting Shale completely for this playthrough.... and I'm a dwarf for the first time. Am I missing out on any dwarf origin (actually ending) stuff?

So Morrigan loves me now and we make-out on a regular basis. It's just a matter of time before I'm in the sack with her making little dwarf babies. What are my chances of getting Leliana seduced too so I can get them both in the sack at the same time? I'm very near this thing turning into a pr0n movie! Screw the quests! :D

And no, I'm not 15. I'm 41. lol

You won't be able to bed both of them simulataneously. But as long as you can keep Leliana's jealousy in check, you can switch off between the two for a while.

You can, however, have a foursome with Leliana, that thief, and the woman in the Pearl if you play your cards right.

They don't show anything though, it's entirely done "off camera" and there isn't even an achievement for it, so somewhat of a waste of effort and time.

They should've atleast gave you a codex entry under you playername for something that well played.

The DLC is so bloody good though, it should be a given that you buy it to start with. Yeah, they're bilking us for more money, but it's GOOD bilking.

I have to ask because with the steam version the instructions for doing this aren't very good.

it came up earlier in the thread but i never could figure it out.

I have 2 CD-keys with my steam account.

How and where do i use them? does 1 of them give me the DLC? I'll admit i didn't spend much time trying to figure it out. I have such little time to play i get too caught up in playing.

ok i found it..

dang do I get armor and the Stone Prisoner?

pfft i'm starting over.. only 35 hours into the game :)

I finally beat the game on normal last night with over 100 hours clocked. Not really sure why it took so long but I enjoyed every minute. After I beat it, I immediately made another character to play on hard or maybe nightmare. This time I'm going to try a dual wield warrior instead of a blood mage. Hopefully I can finish this play through before Mass Effect 2 comes out. :D

Liking DA so far, brings back warm fuzzy memories of playing old school rpg's.

However, I am a bit concerned about the difficulty level. Compared to say BG1 & 2, DA so far is really easy given that you immediately recover after each battle. Its nowhere near as unforgiving as BG1 & 2 early on where you always had to be stocked up on potions and if a party member was killed you were pretty much pushing shit uphill until you made it to the next village.

Admittedly I am not very far into DA, but can people reassure me that the difficulty will escalate?

Ah, the good old days. Don't forget schleping short swords and studded leather armor back and forth to town to buy regular plate.

If you're not playing on hard or nightmare, up the difficulty. If you're already maxxed out, well... that's it.

I'm sure there'll be mods out soon to up the difficulty.

In addition to upping the difficulty, the more mages you have, the easier the game gets. A good balance of difficulty on nightmare I've found was 2 mages, but if you want an ever bigger challenge try just 1 or even no mages.

The tough fights, either through lots of mobs or a single tough enemy, can be easily abused with multiple mages.

For fights that have a lot of enemies, your mages can cast AOE's from another room / max cast range and they will usually stay in the same spot and get owned. For tough single enemies, your mages can cycle through cone of colds (although it's been nerfed, it's still useful) and other CC's.

So simply, if you want the game harder, lower the amount of mages in your party.

The difficulty doesn't really escalate as such, mobs tend to get easier to kill with AOE spells and such but you tend to see more of the weaker ones, so overall if you're good with CC and AOE the difficulty doesn't really steadily grow by much.

It does however spike in places to be retardedly hard for some boss fights, I had particular trouble with the defence of Redcliffe and a few others after that. There are some nice side quests where you can fight solid monsters like getting pieces of armour in the forests in the elven area, and you find glass philactraies around the world which if you tamper with spawn some bad ass mini boss if you wish to kill them.

You can dynamically change the difficulty in the menu at any point so up it a bit if you want it harder just watch out for the bosses :p

Sir, I can assure you it is not a waste of my time! :D

Some of the dialogue is sort of worth it, but I wish they'd of shown even a little more, like all 4 of you going into her cabin on the ship and Zev winking as he closed the door.

Alright guys, I know I'm late to the party but I just beat the game and I don't remember when I have enjoyed playing something as much as I did this in a long long time. It's also been a long time since I have wanted to replay a game. Can't wait to make a female character this time and be a ruthless bitch, hahaha! For now though, must take a break from gaming for 4 days straight.

Just finished my 2nd playthrough about an hour ago. Right around 40 hours this time, but I skipped a lot of the side quests and stuff that I did my first time through. Jolly good time. Now to go again, with a mage this time!

Started my third.

Elf starting area is by far the weakest and most pointless. not at all impressed with that.

Playing a rogue after doing a mage and then a dual-wield warrior, and I"m not impressed - archery skills are useless (and even with most of my points in Dex so far, unreliable at best), and the rest just feels like a warrior that gains more from being behind. Meh.

Keep in mind you don't need to take along Liliana or Zevran if you're a rogue, so you can take another fighter or another mage. A side-benefit.

yeah, and I am, but early on at least it makes things rather hard (I'm playing on hard this time), and I'm just not ~sold~ on the character.

That's the big difference - the Human Mage opening area sold me on the character - I had something invested in him. Same with my little dwarf warrior - she freaking rocked and wanted revenge. The elf? Meh. Bo-ring. There's just nothing compelling there about her. I was hoping that she'd be tied to the main group of elves you work with (which would be similar to the dwarf start), but she was not. There's nothing new to play for with her.

I may go try a city elf, or a dwarf commoner, or a human noble instead - lets see if there is something unique about one of them instead of the rather boring Dalish opening.

My gods man! Are you being held by al-qaeda torturers?!

I'm not done with my first play-through yet. I have Orzammar and whatever comes after that left.

Anyone getting problems with visual equipment of main character? When I equip new armors/weapons, they just change stats - no visual changes. Like my warrior got finally star fang, but he visually he is still using his previous battleaxe. On other party members changes in weapons/armors do show up

I think this happens with a couple of mods (remove helmets maybe?), but the quick and easy fix for this is to do a quicksave/quickload and it should come back with the correct stuff.

If only I were going around in cricles!

That's probably my biggest complaint so far with the game - it's too linear. Or at least, the first 14% (25 hours) that I've experienced so far has been fairly linear. Yes, I will admit that going into this I knew it was a Bioware game and that consequently the story and the gameplay was going to be fairly linear. I just didn't realize how badly I've been spoiled by games like Fallout 3 and Oblivion.

Here, it's almost like you're island hopping. You do one small section, and then you travel over to another small section. The sections themselves are entirely straighforward affairs, with virtually no room for you to explore off the beaten path. Again, I knew coming into the game that it would be like this... but, yeah, it's starting to get a bit tired.

Come to think of it, Baldur's gate is about as much island hopping as Dragon age. I'd say BG/Dragon age are about halfway between linear FPS' and open box Oblivion/Fallout/Morrowind.

Even better... skip the locks... you don't find anything groundbreak. Only extra junk to sell.

The best thing is to just use the lockbashing mod. Totally worthwhile after the first playthrough.

Just wanted to say I finished my first play through today at 70 odd hours and it was one of the best gaming experiences I have ever well...experienced. I'm SO glad I invested in this game. Interesting story and all, but what really did it for me were the absolutely amazing characters. The epilogue was such a nice touch to the ending as well, though I wish it was all animated. Sad to see what I did to Orzammar as a result of my choices though.

Now to join the rest of you and fire up those second/third/fourth/billionth games. Finished nearly just in time for the new DLC too.

As I'm nearing the end of the game...I've experienced a pretty interesting turn of events.
For the first 1/2 of the game I struggled with almost any difficult battle and I literally had to use game exploits to complete almost anything. However once I hit level 17 or 18 I've had no issues with any battles. With most of them I'm just running my main character (rogue, 2-weapon specialist), Alistair, & Shale and just letting them go crazy with multi-hit combo attacks while Morrigan puts their archers to sleep and then follows up with waking nightmare. I didn't get either of those spells until recently and now I'm wishing I got them back at level 5 or 6 :p

In general - for anyone struggling with this game, get sleep/waking nightmare ASAP. It really does make the game pretty easy. Both cast virtually instantly and if you do them back to back they're virtually a lock to wipe out 1/2 of a crowd. Considering the casting time for many of the crazy spells like blizzard/firestorm/etc. I'm amazed those two cast so quickly and work so well. Mass paralyze, too.

Just answer me this simple question:

For someone who didn't like KOTOR (stupid combat is stupid) and enjoyed games like Oblivion/Fallout 3 and hack&slash like Diablo/Torchlight, would you recommend this game?

I'd say no.That's just my opinion though if you did not like KOTOR and like easy mode Fallout 3 then steer clear of DAO.

Easy mode? No, I played FO3 on hard. It's not about the difficulty, it's about the style of play. I really like free roam and I'm just more action focused nowadays, not that it's all that matters. The Witcher had plenty of action but I still struggled to bring myself to finish it (again, not because of the difficulty).

mebbe. Probably not.

Yeah, thanks. That's what I wanted to know. I've bought my fair share of games before based solely on hype (the good one), praise and high scores only to be disappointed because after playing I realised I didn't actually like the games because of their gameplay, etc. No matter how good they were, I just couldn't get into them. (Case in point: Left 4 Dead)

I bought this, but havent been able to play it yet as my new rig isnt here yet. Ive heard many conflicting reports about the combat. Some people say you have to pause every two second through the whole game, and others say its like KOTOR.

I loved KOTOR and liked the combat system, but I surely didnt have to pause that often. If i recall correctly, I would usually pause maybe once a fight for regular baddies, just to make sure my party wasnt doing something stupid, but I never really needed it(i beat it on hard). The only time I had to pause alot was on boss fights.

So i guess my question is, are the people complaining just people use to FPS gameplay and the turn-based? style of games I guess you could call it.

I would say that for the most part the people complaining about the combat being buggy or hard or too much pausing are simply doing it wrong. I mean yeah, the first time you play it you are going to be pausing a fair amount, simply because you don't have your stuff set up right, but once you get the hang of combat and tactics, everything is much smoother. I mean, on most normal fights my 2nd play through, I would just the my tactics auto fight it. The hard battles are still a pause fest, but that's half the fun! It's like a tactical combat/RPG game.
