Downsampling at non-native resolutions

Usually you would use downsampling to render at a higher resolution then your monitor is capable of handling but display it anyway at its native resolution. The process seems pretty auto-magic to me, so I can't figure out if it's possible to downsample from a higher resolution yet display at a lower resolution than the native resolution of the monitor. For example, I'm using a Seiki 4K. It does 1080p at 120hz and 4K at 30hz. I want to downsample something like 1440p to 1080p and have it in 120hz, instead of having it upscaled to 4K but at 30hz. Is this possible? Dependent on the display's scaler? What's going on behind the scenes?
 
afaik gedosato is the only tool that allows for downsampling from any resolution/refresh rate to any resolution/refresh rate, but it doesn't work with every game. just go get sweetfx and use luma sharpen. downsampling isn't worth the performance hit for the minimal iq gain you get from doing it.
 
Looks and feels very good at 120hz, but, still, it is 1080p on a large screen. Compared to an actual 1080p display of the same size there is far less of a screen-door effect, however, as the pixels are about 4x smaller.

Minimal IQ gain? It's basically full scene AA, it looks fantastic.

Can you play FPS games online and feel competitive playing on the Seiki 4K monitor? Honestly my competitive mental attitude is still there but my eyes have long betrayed me. :) Thanks for mentioning that the screen door effect is lessened on the monitor. I was wondering about that also. My brain says wait for the Free Sync versions to come out, but I really want a bigger monitor now.

And more on topic, I love downsampling when my GPU has free resources to do it. In the game Project Cars there is an option for 9X downsampling. It's how they make all of the trailer videos like this.
 
If you can play at a constant 120fps there is virtually no screen-lag, and the larger size means things are so much easier to see. Having a larger physical FOV can't be discounted. Going back to a 23" monitor from the 50" Seiki I'm using feels like I'm playing where's Waldo for PC. This is applicable only for a 4K screen because the screen door effect is lessened by the higher pixel density. When I tried to use a 46" TV one time at the same viewing distance I have now (2-3ft), it just wasn't feasible.

There is some noticeable input lag at native 4K however (that's aside from the 30hz limitation), so bear that in mind before you go for it, if you hold on to your displays for a long time. Seiki's own "Pro" line with 4K at 60hz is going to be released by early next year, and I'm sure there'll be other options not too far off behind that. For what I paid for it though ($429), I'm very pleased.
