Down-sampling = Eye-strain?

Last night I experimented with down-sampling for the first time on my setup. I ended up going with 3200x1800 down-sampled to 2560x1440. It helped with the aliasing, but I'm not sure if it was just me, but the picture felt uncomfortable to look at. I tried it in Crysis 3 and Planetside 2, and 2560x1440 felt very "relaxing" to look at compared to 3200x1800 down-sampled.

My monitor OSD confirmed it was only displaying the regular 2560x1440 at 60Hz, so I don't believe it was the monitor. Maybe 3200x1800 (1.25x larger than 1440p) is just an awkward size to be scaling down to 1440p?

Haven't downscaled down to 2560x1440, but when downscaling from 2560x1440 to 1080p I experience no additional eye-strain no matter what the game type. I'll try going from 3200x1800 => 2560x1440 tonight and see what happens on my end.

Also, may want to try reading the following if you haven't already (concerning blurriness when using non-optimal resolutions): http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1700046

Non-integral downsampling isn't the ideal thing to do, but the results shouldn't be poor. Unless the image is for some reason exceptionally blurry, there shouldn't be any additional eye strain.

The downsampled image may be overbright or blurry, maybe just enough to irritate your eyes. The resolution you have chosen to downsample isn't necessarily the ideal one, especially if it exceeds the 165MHz pixel clock limit. There can be a lot of experimentation to get it looking right. See this walkthrough.

Is it possible to do it with a 2560*1440 monitor, when I try it always say that the monitor do not support this resolution.

I find using a resolution that is not a multiple for downsampling doesnt look so good.

Either use 2x2 res, or 1x2, or 2x1 (width by height)

I felt similar weird feeling when i downsampled Witcher 1 from 2560x1600 to 1920x1200. I couldn't name the problem but it felt wrong when playing.

Hmm good idea on using 1x2 multiplier. I'll have to give it another try when playing something not demanding gpu wise.
