Is there a way to have 2 power supplies start up at the same time? I have the following running off one power supply

Athlon 64 3200 (Venice)
DFI LANPARTY UT SLI-DR
XFX GeForce 6600GT SLI
120GB HD ATA
160GB HD ATA
Plextor DVD-R ATA
LG DVD-ROM ATA
Koolance Exos
4x 80mm Fans

using a XION 500W power supply

I feel that I am using most of the power on the power supply ( I start having problems if I connect all the fans) 2 fans are currently not running.

Is there a way to start up two power supplies off one switch? Ideas for where I could put it? I have my old Antec TruePower 420 that I could use to power some of my equipment.
 
How about getting a single quality PSU? Chances are that XION unit isn't putting out "500W".
 
I'll try the voltmeter test tonight but I thought that XION was a quality PSU

The Xions are Superflowers.

If there mere additional amperage draw of two measley little fans is sending your power supply over the edge, something is way wrong.

If that Xion was working properly (who knows.. maybe it's defective) it should be MORE than enough to run your PC.

So you only have problems when you hook up these two fans, right? What kind of problems? Where are you hooking the fans up? To the mobo or to a power cable and if it's to a power cable, is it a cable that's supplying power to something else?
 
I have everything but the fans hooked up and when I hook up the fans to the same line as the watercooler the watercooler starts beeping and shuts everything down, which I assume means that there is not enough power to run the watercooling. I could try rearranging what is on which power line to see if that helps. I just feel that one line should be able to run two fans, the exos and a floppy power connector to the Motherboard. (The Motherboard has 4 power connectors, 2x12 24pin, 2x2 4pin/graphics, 1x4 Hard Drive/Molex, 1x4 Floppy Drive/mini-plug)

I ran 2 hardwired 400 watts and a large RAID array for 3 years without issue on one of my boards (Abit KR7A)
however it may have been a contributing factor in the death of another board (ECS whatever :p )
though Im not at all sure about that

not running them synchd however certainly corrupted the hell out of the array :p
eventually switched to a Zippy Emacs MR3-6450P N+1
with considerably less total wattage but plenty for what was actually required
with 32A on the +12V rail for the drives and considering the mobo's VRM was powered off the +5V

Feeeeeeelings.... Whoa whoa whoa... Feeeeeeeelings.

Rethink that. The power supply may have enough juice, but by running everything off of one power lead you may be creating enough resistance to drop the votlage on that one rail to the point where it's unacceptable.
 
I would think that XION PSU should be able to put out enough juice for your system. I've got even more running off of a 400W PCP&C Silencer I've had in my system and haven't had any problems. It's also running a Koolance rig, 5 HDs, 3 Opticals, 9700pro, and a pair of 2400+ XPs.

If you are going to try a second PSU approach if any of the supplies have an external switch and you keep the system on most of the time I'd suggest simply using that to power the water pump and any HDs/opticals you might have in your system. Simply short the green wire on the mobo connector of the supply you use and every time you flip the switch it'll start powering those devices. Then you should be able to start up the rest of the system without a problem. It'll also keep HD spin ups from causing power drops if the other supply is running that close.

You could simply splice together the green wires from both supplies and the mobo should boot power on both PSUs but you need to make sure each PSU is powering devices that are powered seperately in case one doesn't power up at the same time. So use one PSU for mobo, GPU, etc and the other for drives, opticals, and the water pump. Other than signal cables they shouldn't be related to eachother at all and if one doesn't power up immediately you shouldn't have any problems.

between the 2 PSUs its
green to green (POW_ON)
black to black (COM)

and on just the second PSU
grey to black (Power Good to COM\Ground)

Yeah. You can't forget the gray to black.

And on a side note.. not that I feel the OP needs two PSU's... You can use a foglight relay on the green of PSU #2 energized by a 12V lead from PSU #1. ;) I did this back in the day and it worked great. :)
