doom3 killed my vid card...literally

I can't believe this...I installed doom3, and loaded it up for the first time. Everything was working ok in the main menu, but when I went to start the actual game, it did the intro and then the screen went blank. I rebooted, and it was still blank, no beeps from the computer or anything, and the diagnostic LEDs are saying that it's failing at the vga bios checkpoint. This video card has been working flawlessly until now, no problems or anything in any other games or in normal use...

I took it out today, and i saw one of the capacitors is bulging, so that's probably what went wrong. But still....how the hell did this game manage to kill my card like this?

I'm running a pny geforce ti 4200, 64mb ram. It's NOT overclocked, and I have a case with decent cooling so it's doubtful that overheating was the problem....

Any ideas?

Maybe your video card was on its way out and when you tried to run Doom 3, it just finished it off. It seems unlikely that Doom3 could have caused this kind of damage spontaneously

...that was quite possibly the most useless, impertinent thing ever said...

You're sure it wasn't overclocked? That seems like a problem that could possibly occur if the card was running faster than stock, but if you weren't then that makes it all the more bizarre...were you running on a stock BIOS?

Running stock speeds, stock bios, everything. Everything on my computer is running at normal speeds.

I've overclocked the video card once a long time ago, but it was maybe like 20mhz with everything working fine (and since the performance increase wasn't worth it, I brought it back down to stock speeds).

What gets me is that I play pretty intensive games like far cry and ut2k4, and those gave no hassles whatsoever.... somehow doom3 permanently killed my card. I would understand a crash or something, but to kill off hardware is pretty strange....

I think that card should have a lifetime warranty. Let me know how that works out for you.

that is very strange, is it seated properly in the AGP? i know the mobo would have made a noise but stranger things ahve happened (although this is very strange)

he said he found a bulged cap so that is most likely the issue,
i think its just a coincidence, not like it died 5 hrs into a heavy firefight and crapped out..

it let go right away so it was prob just due....

Lifetime Replacement warranty does not cover items out of production if PNY no longer stocks them. (Lifetime is defined as the lifetime of the product on the market. Outdated technology is not covered by lifetime warranty if the item is no longer available on the common market as a new product.)

Hate PNY's "lifetime" warranty and I have no idea why they bother calling it that. I really hope they do replace it for you though.

Yeah, there was a company that sold some bad caps to manufacturers a few years back. Here's some info: bad caps I had some problems in the past with these caps. From what I have heard, PNY will not acknowledge your warranty unless you have the original receipt... Good luck with that. The cap can be replaced, just grab one that has the same numbers as the one that's bad from Radio Shack and either solder it yourself, or get someone to do it.

Doom3 killed my vid card too. About a day after playing doom3 my XFX geForceFX5200 failed to boot.

I plugged my old geForce 3 ti200 and it works fine.

That is a little weird but probably still a coincidence.

hm, i didn't think this was what they were talking about when they said doom 3 would help hardware sales...

hopefully your card is still under warranty

Hopefully it is too. I submitted an online RMA so we will see how it goes.

That's your problem.. it's a PNY.

Similar thing happened to me w/ that exact card. I was playing an all-night round of AO, and it died..Fried through copper traces on the opposite side of the board of a Vreg. *Not* overclocked, and barely 6 months old @ the time. Later found out that it was a victim of bulging caps as well. Nor did I get lucky enough to get an RMA for it - bought it for cash @ the local BB, and no longer had a receipt  .

[thread jack]
With that said, I had pretty much the opposite happen with my current card [Sapphire R9500np], as original poster.. My cat knocked a speaker off the desk a while back (and onto the case on floor which was lying on it's side @ the time), and my comp ran kinda 'funny' since. Have since moved, then comp completely crapped out shortly after..Windoze would die on boot up everytime it got to the login screen.. No amount of uninstall/reinstall drivers (softmod or not), then full format, reinstall everything, nor taking all components out of case and cleaning the dust bunnies helped..

Decided to install my OLD R128 Pro AIW yet again and resigned myself to having to get a new card (No 'net connection then though; so no 'Egg hunting - damn Verizon). Out came Doom, and tried to install anyway..Wouldn't run of course...Decided WTF, I'll try my R9500..And it *works*! Didn't even bother to uninstall/DriverCleaner anything. It just auto safe-moded, and I installed v4.7s 'n rebooted.

Moral of the story (i guess), if you have a part die mysteriously, and the obvious doesn't work - don't give up on it..

/thread jack ;) [sorry 'bout that - just had to]

PNY is retarded...they offer a "lifetime" warranty but in order to get replacement it has to be a current piece of hardware AND you have to still have the receipt. Guess I know what company to avoid in the future...

I talked to one of my buddies, and he's hooking me up with his old ti 4200 card, so I'll be back to where I started.

(damn, this was the perfect excuse to buy a new video card too....)

Remember, you can get your PNY fixed. An electronics repair place would charge $5-10 to replace a cap. If you dont want the card, give me a PM and I'll take it off your hands ;)

its a good time to upgrade just because a new 6800gt will run all games great for the next 12 months and beyond. their will be no huge mid year speed bump like last year

i have the same card with the same problem pny gave me an rma # a week ago im not sure if im going to do it or not, i might just find someone that knows what they are doing and have them replace the cap. probablly easier and about the smae price, so you might wanna give the pny rma a try. if you have the orginal reciept or are handy in word :)

That is not true... PNY will replace your card under the lifetime warranty if you have a reciept.. Even if the card is not made anymore.. I sent in my defective ti4400 128mb card and they sent me back a 5900xt 128mb... Whoever said PNY doesn't honor there warranty because they don't make the card anymore is wrong! They will send you a comparable card in stock... If anyone needs proof I can upload the warranty invoice they sent back to me with my 5900xt in exchange for my old and defective ti4400.... Just make sure you have a receipt when you call to RMA ayour video card...

Sons of bitches. I sent them my dead Ti4400 and they sent me back a shit 5600 Ultra. I called and finally talked to the head to the RMA department and he insisted that the 5600 Ultra was better than the Ti4400. Now they are sending out 5900XT's in it's spot, oh well sold the 5600 Ultra on Ebay for $125.

When you got your RMA#, did you have the receipt? I don't have that anymore (it's been over a year!)

But yeah, I can play games again for now-- my friend's ti 4200 works fine in the place of the one that just died. Now I can take my time and try to get this other card fixed, maybe sell it off afterwards. Haven't gotten a chance to try doom3 again yet, so I don't know how it plays (not to mention that I'm somewhat apprehensive about it now too)

Now the bigger question is-- should I shell out some money so that I can play doom3 with a niiice video card? so tempting... :D

That line that PNY don't honor the warrenty is complete BS. It really need's to stop being said

I sent back not one but two seperate 64 meg 4200s in the last year or so

One was replaced with 128 meg 4200. One was replaced with a 128 meg 5600 Ultra that is now in my server

End of story

indeed man ,i'm sorry for your decessed card!
a strong,and beautiful breed that ti4200.

i was in love with she

yet ,get over it !i know is hard!

this chick:9600pro -ultra(factory oc)is hot and wet for you

just grab it and enjoy many nights and many orgasms from now on this exciting doom3!

I was VERy suprised at how well a 9600Pro played doom 3. Not all the AA and things, but it looks sweet as hell. I then tried it on a 9600XT (now 9800pro, daughter has the XT) that is in my work rig and it looks even better. I find it so funny how everyone was freaking out about not having a good enough card for the game.
