DOOM: The Dark Ages

Eternal is the GOAT of the recent trilogy...I loved the challenge (it was a difficult game, The Ancient Gods DLC was absolutely brutal before they nerfed it), the platforming, enemy design, weapon switching...by the end of the game they were throwing every single enemy at you in waves of 100+...performance in Vulkan was also outstanding...so well optimized...one of the best FPS ever made in my opinion

That's my beef with Dark Ages, it's a great and original Doom game, but man it's the same old same old level after level. Fight some wimpy zombies at first, then some mini bosses, then mobs of zombies and mini bosses, and then the big boss. Rinse and repeat just in different themed levels. Gets boring rather quick for me.

Of the 3 newer Doom games, Doom 2016 is still my fav.
Agree. I stopped playing Eternal because I didn't like it. I stopped playing DA because I was doing the same thing i've already done a dozen times already. I'll eventually complete DA because I do load it up for some mindless fun every now and again and complete a chapter or two. 2016 I played through and finished pretty quick

Eternal sucked, felt like a Super Mario Bros meets Doom game. I hated the jumping and platforming, killed the whole feel and vibe.

DA is much better, but it's extremely repetitive like every level is the same thing, just kill mobs and mini bosses and work up to a big boss, rinse and repeat the entire game. I couldn't finish it, just too much of the same over and over.

Dark Ages wasn't as successful as Eternal or Doom 2016 because they stopped evolving the gameplay and listened to the complainers who whined about the difficulty and platforming...Dark Ages was a step back...Dark Ages could have been the perfect culmination of the new trilogy if id Software had not listened to the outside noise and made the game they wanted

even if you didn't like the platforming you have to give them credit for trying new things...keep evolving otherwise you stagnate

I reject your made up analysis and substitute my own.

Eternals success was due to 2016 being amazing, DAs lack of was due too Eternals disappointment

Eternal was a massive success...so according to your theory Dark Ages should have done even better...according to your theory Forbidden West should have done incredible sales built off of Zero Dawn

both Doom 2016 and Eternal were great games...I preferred Eternal as did a lot of others...nothing's wrong with preferring the 2016 game but Dark Ages was id Software over-correcting...they should have took Eternal and evolved the gameplay again versus dumbing it down

Eternal gave me a Dark Souls FPS vibe which I loved

Dark Ages brought us back to what Doom was from the beginning a great FPS with some brutality mixed in from time to time.

At least, that was the case for me. I pre-ordered Doom Eternal cuz I loved 2016 so much. I haven't pre-ordered a game since the 90s or early 2000s. I don't believe in pre-ordering games. I don't even get games at launch, but usually years after. I ended up canceling my pre-order (GMG was only selling the version for Bethesda Launcher), and then my senses came back to me and I decided to wait-and-see on the game. But another friend who was a big fan of 2016 bought me a copy of Eternal. So yeah I did get to play it. And yeah I ended up being disappointed. Realized if my friend hadn't bought it for me then I probably never would have bought it myself. As a result I wasn't excited about TDA at all after how Eternal turned out. But with TDA this time I knew from the get-go their intentions to change things up. With Doom Eternal I had no idea that was coming, so it really caught me off guard. Anyways a friend ended up buying me a copy of TDA, so I got to play that one too. 2016 is still the one I like the most (although there are some things I really like about Eternal that I miss when I play 2016). But the tech and the engines are so fuckin' sick. Doom Eternal may have let me down, but idTech 7 sure as fuck didn't.

Yes, I too loved the Souls like melee combat in the original Doom and using my shield to parry non- hit scan projectiles.

Time for Quake to make a comeback.

Make it on an new Dark Ages engine, give it that unique medieval / sci-fi / psychedelic theme

Bring back Trent Reznor / Nine Inch Noize to do the music.

It'll sell a billion copies :)

A few months ago, ZeniMax filed for a brand-new Quake trademark so we can certainly hope...

after the lukewarm sales of Dark Ages I wouldn't be surprised to see Bethesda move on to Quake...they completed their Doom trilogy and now it's time for the modern Quake trilogy

They had a decade and released 3 good Doom games. Now it's time for a change and what's better than new Quake

I've always felt that Doom and Quake were pretty similar in terms of their gameplay...I'd prefer if id Software made a new RAGE game or a new ip altogether

I've personally always been a WAY bigger Quake fan than Doom, I loved the first Quake with the trippy sci-fi HP Lovecraft sort of vibe and NiN music.

And Quake 2 is one of my all time fav games ever, such a fun action shooter, that I still play today when I'm bored, and Quake 2 CTF was classic back in the day.

You keep saying the sales were less but:
this says otherwise.

Also Dark Ages was available first day on GamePass which I’m sure lowered the sales numbers.

the title of the article literally sales "No Sales Figure Yet"...that article is talking about the Day 1 player numbers...I'm sure Day 1 numbers were higher due to the hype for a new Doom game

the article even compares the Steam player peaks and Dark Ages was lower than Eternal

even ignoring the all-time peak numbers...just look at the last 24 hour player stats...there's more people playing Eternal over the past 24 hours than Dark Ages...also note that Eternal was released in 2020 compared to Dark Ages which came out in 2025...the fact that Eternal's player base is the same or slightly ahead of Dark Ages says a lot

and if you want to compare the Peak player stats- Eternal has more than 3 times the numbers...yes Game Pass has an effect but not that big of one to make up the difference...people that love a game on Game Pass would likely buy the game...even if you say Dark Ages was overpriced at launch...OK but the game has been on sale on Steam for as low as $23.09

no matter what metric you look at Dark Ages was not as popular as Eternal

As much as I hated the parkour and Super Mario Bros stuff in Eternal, other than that it's a better game than DA for sure. Even graphics wise, for being 5 years apart, Eternal looks just as good certainly no worse.

But I'm ready for a new gen Quake game now.

I think Eternal is better than Dark Ages but I also think they’re both trash.

Only redeeming quality of Eternal is the meat hook for the super shotgun, miss that every time I fire up 2016.

I actually just finished Quake 1 for the first time in recent months, using the Nightdive remaster. Played it plenty of times before but never actually beat it. Started working on the first expansion but I was all Quake'd out for the time being, so I moved on to some of the other many games in my queue (some of which I had already been working on before I even started Quake 1). I've gone through Quake 2 and 4 in the past, so I was overdue for Quake 1. But yeah I think I would love to see id Software tackle a new Quake next.

Who says it didn't? First time I'm hearing that.
Forbidden West sold 65% fewer copies compared to Zero Dawn. 8.4 million to 24 million. Of course, Horizon Dawn's numbers are complicated by the fact it was bundled with consoles for a long period of time.

That's misleading, the 8.4 million is the only available sales figure they released and it's from 2023, roughly one year after release of the game. There has been no updates since then. So in it's first year it actually outsold Zero Dawn. It fell off after that, which is understandable since the game was kind of crap.

This is in line with the theory that bad entries in a franchise hurt the one that comes after the most, the first bad entry will be successful on momentum alone.

Bottom line - older games are usually better than the new games with all the fancy graphics and with a better story. As for DA, I won't buy it for $1. The last one for me was 2016 which was excellent. Even DOOM 3 was great.

As for ZD and FW, both excellent games. I've played threw them a couple of times, but they may be the last newer games I play.
