since i had to return my ati 9800 xt few months ago because somehow it was very skippy and it was studdering every few secs... I think the problem is... because I didn't do a clean install...
so anyways.. now I have gotten doom 3 from bestbuy...

I can't stand using me 1600+ cpu... and ti 4200 anymore..

my question is..

should I ... upgrade cpu or video card?

my m/b is a7v333 and I have 512 samsung pc2700 ram

video card.. I was thinking about 9700 pro or 9800 pro...
another question whats the difference between the 9800 pro oem and the regular 9800 pro? and whats the extreme edition 9800 pro..
are they clocked the same???
btw the 9800 pros only have 30 days warrenty for about 180 for oem 190 for regular -200 for extreme edition ... and 9700 pro have life time ... warrenty for about 160 dollars.. if I decide to get one of them...so which one should I put down for???

I need to play doom 3!! I can't stand 640 * 480 ...with everything turned off...

thanks!

9800pro oem and 9800pro retail. One is in an oem package. Won't come with the box. I've never heard of an EE 9800pro. What brand is it by? It's probably just a sales gimmick, there is only 9800pro and 9800xt around now.

First off the 9700pro is kicked by the 9800pro. Don't bother with a 9700. If you're going to go midrange for doom3 get a 9800pro 128mb. Don't get the EE it is probably a crappy branded card.

If I was you I'd save up another $50-$100 and get a 6800. It offers better Doom3 performance, and it will last you longer.

that is the problem... I might need a better cpu too...

with the extra 50-100 dollars I would spent it on cpu....

cpu +video would probably run me about 200 + dollars...

I rather spend it on both cpu and video card instead just one video card....

I suppose, get a 9800pro then. It's still a decent card, and you'll be able to tackle 1024x768 at medium good detail with a good framerate.

with good cpu? 2800 + barton or throughbred? or.. something else?? that is about 100 dollars?

Barton, you're going to want 400mhz fsb, so you'll need to OC mildly.

Dude, even with an upgrade like this Doom 3 won't be that good. I would save my money and get an A64 and a 6800.

I need some doom action higher than 640 * 480 with everything off tho!!..

I have asus a7v333 btw...

 I can't afford a64 3000 + !!

and 6800!!

I think I just go for 9800 pro then.. only about 180 dollars...

I have a p4 2.4 | 512mb | 9800pr0 128mb and Im running doom 3 at 1024x768 high and its running as smooth as silk. I started out running it at 800x600 high, and I was getting lag at every door. So, I went into the config, and set the hunkmegs (i think its called something else in doom 3 i forget) to 96 versus 20. I was still getting lag through doors at 800x600 high. So, I bumped up the res to 1024x768 high, no more lag!

basically, it allows the game to use more system ram, so when you move to new areas in the game (ie through doors), the transitions are smoother.

where to config that again??

and how come when u set on higher res... it has became less skippy??

just save your money for now and upgrade everything a few months from now when it's cheaper.

you'd be better off upgrading to an A64 3000+ system....your ti4200 should scale nicely with a good cpu/mobo/memory upgrade.....you definately wouldn't want to get a top of the line video card with the system you currently have - you'll be cpu limited; so do the cpu upgrade first, then the video card - better yet...do all of it at once :D

if it were me and i had little money i would buy a used 9700pro and a used cpu. then sell my old stuff to get a gig of ram. You might be able to get a cpu still under warrenty. what speeds does that mobo support?

I know i should up grade my video card but will doom 3 run half decent on my MSI MX 4000 t-128 (128 mb ddr)

my m/b a7v333 with 1016 bio can support up to regular 3000 +

I am thinking just get a 9800 pro...

somehow I decided to oc my cpu to 2200+ level.. last night..

I actually received this cpu from a friend for bday about 2? years ago...

I actually saw this cpu on his epox something m/b going up to 3000+ level!!!! with multiplier * fsb... crazy... but I guess my m/b sucks... with no multi control...

I guess go for 9800 pro then??
yes/no?

If you think you'll have some more money at your disposal to finish upgrading the system in the near future, I'd do the mobo/cpu upgrade first... Why? Because at the moment the prices for the current generation of relatively high-end processor/mobo combos are as low as they'll likely go, while the newest vid cards out there are still barely available and pretty much selling for their MSRPs or more...

Can't really tell ya for sure but my guess is the newest of the new will slowly drop in price, and the Radeon 9800s in particular will as well... Seeing as a 9800 Pro w/256MB atm costs almost as much as a GF 6800 non-Ultra/GT (the 12 pipe line version w/128 MB), granted the performance difference between them in older games isn't much, but the 6800 is a newer part and more future-proof (performs better in games with heavy use of shaders), 9800 Pro w/the usual 128 MB is $70 or so cheaper still tho.

You can get an A64 3000+ for like $180 and a decent motherboard for as little as $80 or 90... On the other hand if you can only afford about $200 right now then a 9800 Pro 128MB is all you can really swing obviously.

true...

maybe I should wait a little bit.. for cpu/ m/b set up...

but I am dying for a new graphic card..

far cry and doom3 doesn't look good or even playable with 4200 ti...

and hl2 coming out too..
