Ok i would like to say that aa/af does matter, because i been playing doom 3 all day,and i originally had my setting to high quality,1600x1200 and had 8xaa ,it was slightly sluggish,so i remembered what the benchmarks said about having high resolution's like 1600x1200 and not needed aa/af turned on,so I turned them off.I saved and quit, and restarted doom 3,and everything was extremely jagged.Far cry looked ten times better.Right now im playing @ high quality,1600x1200,4x aa,and it looks good(not as good as 8x aa,but decent and not notice any drops in fps.
My system in case you wanna know.
Asus A8V
AMD FX-53(939)
BFG 6800 Ultra OC
1GB ocz 3200 400 mhz
2x74GB Sata Raptors(RAID0)

Yeah because you have the system to power it. Not everyone has an athlon fx 53 and a geforce 6800 ultra. Hard OCP just said it wasn't needed and the game looked great without it.

Thats not what i mean.I was under the impression that if you set your resolution high, that you really dont need aa/af.Atleast thats what was said in the hardocp benchmark. From the pictures i saw no jaggies with 1600x1200 no aa/af.But in my case it was extremely jaggy with the same settings.

I only mention my system when i feel its neccesary.

we only said AA, we didn't say anything about AF

8X AF is automatically enabled when you set High Quality in DOOM 3

what we meant was it was better to crank up the resolution first, i.e. going from 1024x768 to 1280x1024 or 1280x1024 up to 1600x1200, before enabling AA, if you are already at 1600x1200 and have the power left over to enable AA, then by all means go for it

funny how in most other games higher AA/AF at lower res always looked better imho....

will find out shortly...game time soon....aieeee.

Ive been playing on 1600x1200 on High quality and it looks awsome. I had 2xaa on but turned it off cause it looked so good without it. It runs great on my system and I could enable AA but I was just so into the game I forgot to turn it back on.

I'm all tickle butt... I get D3 in 1 hr... !!!!!!!! I'm shooting for High settings.. 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF.. doubt it.. but we'll see.

You need 2Gbs of RAM, then you should be able to play at a higher res and UQ. If you want to use 8x a/a (who does that? I don't think hardOCP did in any of their tests) you most likely could with more RAM. IMO that will be holding your system back a little too much...

Man I recieved my copy today anf boy was I impressed! See my sig for my system specs, they are running the game at 1280x1024 High settings with 4xaa. I'm constantly capping at 60fps, it drops to about 50 in some rare cases.

This game so owns!

I did also try Ultra Quality at 800x600, it was very playable minus doors opening, was the only time I experienced slow downs. Although it may have been 1024x768 with aa. I'll try again later but I was pushing 30-40fps until a door opened, but it was a very quick slow down.

I need some help clearing up my confusion, bear with me im a newb ;)

1) Does AA bog down gameplay as in dropping fps??? or.. what?..
2) What is AF?... 4x AF, 8x AF??, Does this also bog gameplay-fps?

-thanks

Brent, is it me or does Farcry seem to have crispier textures than Doom 3, although Doom 3 has better shadows.

No, I don't have the game yet.........it will come to the great unwashed masses tomorrow, I hope.

they are two very different games using two very different engines

DOOM 3 does have large texture sizes

DOOM 3 is unique because it completely uses normal mapping, there isn't any texture on that screen that isn't using normal mapping, this is a first in a PC game.

When you are inside it at High Quality you will think twice about this post you just made ;) There are scenes and textures in DOOM 3 that look absolutely real, like a pre-rendered movie, you'll see ;)

See I disagree with this, i've always loved higher resolutions. It gives the game so much more definition. I'd take definition over reduced jagged lines, plus AA still looks like shit at sub 1024x768 (at least I think so) unless you cranked it past 4x. But maybe that's just me. With AF though, I feel the AA helps a little bit, even 2x.I feel AF helps a game more than AA. One compensates for the other, but I'd take a res bump over AA anyday.

Yeh, screenshots don't do this game justice, its simply incredible looking in motion.

Oh by the by, will doom 3 be out in most places tomorrow? Or is that when most of the pre-orders go out? I'm so anxious to play the game. It upset me when I didn't get to get it early

As I mentioned in my XP w/ Doom 3 post, I find that 1280x1024/medium quality/2xAA is extremely playable on my 9800 pro. The aliasing in the game is not bad, in my humble opinion, but the 2xAA does a nice job of removing most of it...

1) Generally yes, because the scene is rendered at a larger resolution (meaning more pixels are pushed) and then dithered down to your playing resolution. This means that the card is doing more work to put the same size image on the screen.

2. Anisotropic filtering is a way of mapping the object to compensate for the fact that it's a 2D image (there's a much better explanation out there, I just don't know it). It's makes a difference turning it on and off, but a lot of the newer cards can do this with a lot less of a performance hit.

Anisotropic filtering pushes the view distances of mipmaps further back. It basically just clears up blurryness in the backrounds up. Just try out like half life or something, turn it off and then enable 8x and compare, there is a MAJOR difference. On older cards the peformance can be decreased severely, on newer cards, it's not too bad.

hEY, haven't read the whole thread but I've been playing at 12x1078 normall, no AA/8xAF...and I tell you...I just cranked it up to 1600x1200 with 2x AA/8x AF and it's freakin' like a whole nuther game. You simply have to see it to believe it.

I was trying to avoid dips in fps, and for the most part I don't get them and certainly not anything that hurts my gameplay (nothing dipping below 30fps and 50+fps average) at this setting and I think it's worth it. Simply an amazing graphics engine.

I was well prepped and over saturated with it and it still blew me away. Wow!

16x12 2x AA is VERY playable on my system, that's simply amazing!

Oh another thing I've noticed is the graphics are noticeably worse if you use 'PERFORMANCE'. Make sure to use 'Quality' and don't enable the AF optimization.

Excellent to hear, so is that 1600x1200 2AA at High quality? Have you tried Ultra Quality???

Not to brag, but I'm playing on 16x12 on Ultra and it looks fine with no AA/AF. Not choppy at all (unless I get into some real serious shit) and looks awsome. My setup:

AMD 3800 FX-53 (939)
6800U
2GB DDR PC-3200 (2x1GB)
74GB Raptor

I also have it hooked up to the plasma tv in the living room so that also may account for some of the image quality.

hmmm, that's cool..but what's the point? I haven't been able to determine a difference between Ultra and High.

ive been playing a bit, didnt really notice a diff between no aa and 2x aa from playing with these settings.

I think the optimal mode for me is 1600x1200, high qual, no aa, 8x af when counting both single and multiplayer.
