Does Windows 7 allow more than 5 GPUs?

I'm going to guess not since under the hood they are about the same thing.

Go for it!

If you hit a wall you know why though.

haha yea

I'll have to switch PSUs between two rigs if I do it (which I've been wanting to do anyway, honestly). So we'll see.

I had 6 GPUs going in Vista for a couple weeks....apparently you can get around the 5 GPU limitation if you never reboot, lol. So maybe I'll just do a "suicide run" of sorts.

It not the number of GPU that the limit, its the number of monitor outputs.
Once you hit 8 monitor outputs then Vista won't load anymore drivers.
The trouble is that on a 9800GX2 card, Vista sees 3 monitor outputs per card, the two DVI's plus the HDMI output.
XP only sees the two DVI's.
If you could disable the HDMI output under Vista then you could get upto 8 GPU's, the same as XP.

So its a question of how many outputs Windoze7 sees per card as to how many GPU's you can run.

Luck .............. :D

oh interesting, I didn't realize that

I hope your right.I would love to see that many gpus at once.Just have your new 5000 watt power supply on hand.

Thanks for the "heads up" brother Tigerbiten :D Not that I have or are planning to have 5 GPUs. It was just nice reading a simple and easy to understand explanation of something I had no ideer about :D

DCing for the CURE

I can see how that'd be frustrating, since I guess only two 9800GX2s (or GTX295s?) would be utilized fully? The other one is just one GPU?

That'd be a ripoff.

Does Server have this same limitation? I wonder what the reasoning behind this is.

Well, if this works anything like the trick for getting ATi and Nvidia cards running at the same time under Vista, loading Windows XP drivers will fix it.

You just won't get Aero.

the reasoning behind is that technically there is absolutely no reason to support more then 5 gpu's.. since even with crossfire the most you can run is 4.. and same goes with SLI.. the insane folders that run more then 4 gpus at a time are a small percentage of winblows users..

I'm not insane..... just demanding :D

you know though.. the true way to fix this is if panda group actually got a bunch of hard core linux people that could design a simple but usable linux distro just based on being able to do hard core GPU folding for more then 4-6 gpu's.. even though there really is only one board out there that would need the support for it.. it would make an awesome advantage for people that just make gpu folding boxes like Atlas..

yeah, a client like that would be pretty amazing. I sure could use it on a few boxes.

Better yet, why can't we just disable the ports via video card bios so they essentially become Tesla cards, negating the whole "number of usable ports" issue?

Perhaps messing around in \HKLM\Hardware\Devicemap\Video might reveal something. My registry has a list of 6 devices, one is the VGAsave device and isn't normally. But two are have the same GUID and end in 0000 and 0001. I'm assuming those are the video ports. Then there's a MaxObjectNumber value set to 5, and ObjectNumberList binary value with 00 01 02 03 04 05 entries

yay registry breaking time.. love it.. i remember when i use to do that with xp to fix stuff.. but that was the good ol days..

I love that idea

Even though the simple(r?) solution is just to run XP, I have a couple machines that could have 3 GX2s in which XP isn't feasible.
