Sure, the faster video cards let you push more polygons and effects. But how does the video playback scale?

Will an ATI 3200 play 1080p just as well as a 5850?

I'm planning on getting an MSI U230 and it has the 3200HD, in preparation for it, i've been working out how to enable GPU rendering and so far it's been great on my 5850. On Windows7 media player it runs up to 50% CPU. On the MPC-HC, it runs at 5%. The netbook should be able to handle 5% of an i5-750, so the question is if i would see the same video performance from the 5850 on the 3200, probably not, but how significant would the performance difference be?

Unlike 3D rendering, video playback isn't gonna be about pushing past 100fps, so it's possible that the 3200 and 5850 will perform almost the same right?
 
I have an onboard 4200HD in my HTPC, which is about as powerful as a 3200HD, and it runs all my 1080p h.264 MKVs just fine. I can even run Morrowind at decent settings at 1080, but it's kinda choppy. If I drop the resolution, I can get 40-60 FPS all the time.
 
I believe the HD3200 does have the Unified Video Decoder so you should be fine.

But even just using the CPU should be fine really.
 
If this is strictly for video playback/htpc you can grab an HD 5450 to get the latest ATI Stream features for under $50.
 
Stream is ATI's competitor to Cuda, and while it's possible to accelerate Video using GPGPU, most of time video acceleration will be done via the Unified Video Decoder.

Yep. The only time you would really need the compute power of a GPU to help in decoding (since a dedicated ASIC handles video decoding), is for deinterlacing content.


Also, the HD3x00/HD4200 IGP cannot transport more than two channels of audio over the HDMI link, while a HD5000 GPU can push and 8 (I am not sure about HD4000 series).

its possible to use the shaders to enhance and de interlace video. however a HD4200 will do some of these and for most people is just fine for a media player. However a 4650 can usually be had for around 30 AR http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131180&cm_re=4650-_-14-131-180-_-Product (note this is the HTCP version hand has half the memory bus, worthless for games but great for shader operations) for around 50 bucks you can get a full version, 70 will get you a 4670 (fair step up) and does allow games to be played @ 1080p (older games or reduced settings though)

then again right now you can get a 5670 for 74 dollars AR. its a power color so not the best warranty but for the price http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131334&cm_re=5670-_-14-131-334-_-Product this would give you all the above, plus the full audio over the HDMI cable (if you needed it, almost no one does) and the best AF possible. It will also give decent 3d performance even at 1080p (again not the high end games, but for a 75 dollar card its pretty sweet)

I can play 1080p video clips with my integrated 4500MHD just as well as I do with my 5830. At least, there is no visual difference to me, though I have yet to measure the FPS.
 
Finally got the u230, and frankly, the HD3200 sucks for video playback.

A few of my h.264 videos were unplayable on the 5850, they either freeze on the first frame and get pixelated, or they get pixelated right off the bat.

On the HD3200, 2 out 3 videos are unplayable and i have to disable DXVA just to get them to work.

I guess this was what they meant about ATI cards only supporting standard h264's. It'll play DVD and Blueray 1080p alright, but everything else is unplayable :(

I wonder if i can still sell this and get an ION instead.
 
I have yet to measure the FPS.

Video is set at a steady frame rate. Having a "better" video card will not increase the frames that it was recorded at. It will either play real time or you will see a large amount of shuddering (very noticeable) and/or artifacts. If the video is playing at true 1080, there isn't much you can do to improve it except for a better display.

Decoding has a fixed requirement of work to be done to display the result, where as games try and render as fast as possible (unless fps capped). Most games will max your GPU where as decoding video will only use as much GPU power as it needs to get the job done.
 
i can play 1080p videos smoothly with MPC-HC with the IGP in my HTPC. But I can't say the same for my 940BE at stock settings. Is the IGP more powerful than a 3ghz quad core cpu? Go figure.

My table saw does a really shitty job of screwing in nails. I guess my screw driver is more powerful than the table saw.
