Does my CPU Severly Bottleneck My GPU?

im not sure. if i look at it now it has NVIDIA branded on the front but it has "Apollo, crafted by A-power" which is the store i had it put together on the top. i think its a custom made case by them in which case i dont know how to name it

just thought i would point it out that a AMD 1090t is not a bottle neck for a single 7970. You will still be gpu limited in 95% of games.

since you keep talking about BF3, then well that is certainly one game the Amd hex core does well in because it actually uses all the cores to some degree.

I am rocking a 8120@ 4.6ghz with two 7870's I am still GPU limited. (dual 7870's > 7970) Amd FX 8120 4.6ghz >1090t@4ghz (though its close)

thats very good to know. i was going to buy a new motherboard and CPU but now i just might buy that HAF X case with cooling and maybe a SSD

Your motherboard is the problem. I don't know why people are telling you to buy cases and cooling and all this other shit.

From Newegg review of that board:

"Pros: Unlocked the two dormant cores of my pII 560, ran 3.8ghz for 6-7 months. When I upgraded to an 1100t, things didn't go quite so well.

Cons: What I initially though was horrible vDroop ended up being the mobo throttling the cpu. It only happens under hard workloads(ie: Prime95, AMD stability test, video encoding, 3D rendering). So if you're wondering why your multiplier is dropping down to 4x in the above workloads (even with CnQ, c1e, etc disabled), now you know. It's a known issue on the m4a87td boards. Just google m4a87td throttling. Overclocking makes the issue worse. Someone below mentioned that the VRM's don't have mosfets, so that could be a bit of the issue.

I really can't believe asus cheaped out on this board like that. They used to be the "go to" brand for reliability/quality...not so much anymore."

I bet your multiplier is dropping for a bit every once in a while. That board is not meant to overclock X6 CPUs.

Edit: And this is due to the VRMs on the board. You need something with a beefier/better cooled power section if you want to overclock an X6.

ok so should i replace it? if so what sort of motherboard should i get that can last me a few years with my setup + i shouldnt need to get a new CPU right if i get a new motherboard.

Get something AM3+ with heatsinked VRMs and 8+2 phase power that's recommended.

There's a post on these forums about this same problem (last post in the thread):

GA-990XA-UD3 vs .
GA-990FXA-UD3
is there any real difference? if so which 1 should i get.

ALSO, internationalhat, either of these Mobos will be an upgrade from the one i have now? since the pricing is not too far apart. i just want to make sure.

had a rather large thread typed up which i was going to post yesterday, till my PC crashed. had a whole bunch of links & images inserted (heaven bench score, HWiNFO64 pics) but can't be arsed retyping the whole lot up again.

recommend 'HWiNFO64' as a good all-round monitoring application to assist in testing your system tho;
http://www.hwinfo.com/

and MSI afterburner (link is down at the moment) which is probably the best GPU OC & monitor tool.
http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/
NOTE: don't use more than 1 software application to poll your 7970 sensors. AMD GPUs are 'monogamous' in this regard. it just causes issues.

anyway i was going to advise you to check your system via HWiNFO64 to see where your performance dips/throttling were originating from. 'InternationalHat' is probably right tho (and others that mentioned the missing heatsinks on your MB) that your MB is probably the culprit. i'd advise you do a full stress + monitoring test before parting with any cash however. any MB that doesn't at least mount some kind of heatsinks on the NB/SB & VRMs is probably a piece of shit. i was surprised Asus released a board without these if i'm honest.

your CPU (1090) definitely enough grunt to power your 7970 in most things at stock. with a half decent OC (3.8 to 4GHz+) its more than enough.

if you do replace you MB, definitely get a AM3+ (970/990X/990FX). this way you'll have an upgrade path to the new Vishera PD chips that'll be hitting the market later this year.
personally i've prefer Asus MBs tho that's my subjective opinion. something like the Sabertooth/Crosshair V 990FX would be ideal. if you're looking for something cheaper the
M5A97 EVO (970 chipset) M5A99X EVO (990X chipset) are decent choices with good power phases + decent sinks on the NB/SB/VRMs. personally i own both a 'Crosshair V' and the cheaper 'M5A97 EVO'. the gigabyte MB's are decent as well. the main reason i went with my CHV was b/c of the intel LAN chip plus the UEFI bios which all the current (AMD) Gigabyte boards lack.

probably doesn't hurt to look at some better CPU heatsinks. the CM 212+ is a bargain but if your looking for some cooling headroom, Thermalright (HR-02) and Noctua (NH-D14) are top end units.

below are a couple of decent guides to tweaking your PII rig.

thank you for the very detailed reply.
last night i actually did a little test of my own and i dont know if its the motherboard throttling. here is the temp's while running PRIME95 right when CPU-Z showed the multiplier go to 4x and it throttled.

1st time: CPU: 68C // MB: 30
2nd time: CPU: 69C // MB: 31
3rd time: CPU: 68C // MB: 31

going to download what you supplied and test some more

If you have $400 to spend get the following - Asus P8P67 Deluxe Motherboard and an Intel i5 2500k. You'll be very happy and should have your problems go away. (I'm biased towards intel and that's what I have).

Also - when playing games such as BF3, if you're not running vSYNC - you'll be locked at 99% GPU useage, but when you turn on vSYNC - your GPU useage should drop to something like 60%.

As long as you're never in a scenario where your GPU useage is below 99% and your CPU is at 99% that would indicate a CPU bottleneck.

I really don't know how to determine a GPU bottleneck (I'm still new at this myself)

Good luck dude!

Why would one get a P67 motherboard when both Z68 and Z77 are available?

Anyways, I think if the OP gets a new motherboard he will be set, but since a decent 990FX motherboard for overclocking is $150+, it might be wiser to switch to Intel. If OP wants to switch to Intel there is no reason to NOT go with a Z77 board (since Z68 is basically same price)

Your choice OP, the CPU you have is a great CPU, but you are being held back by your motherboard.

not on a Amd system, you will hardly ever see 99% cpu usage with a hexcore or octocore cpu. There are some things that will do that, but games certainly not one of them, even battlefield 3.

Hello. the question is straight forward and so ill list what specs i have or think are important. (if i leave out something obviously required forgive me, i learned the difference between CPU and GPU this week... yea im new at this stuff)

ASUS Crosshair IV Formula
AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T Processor
Processor Speed: 3804 MHz
Memory: 8190 MB (DDR3)
Platform: 64 Bit
PSU: 850w

i just started upgrading my computer. originally had a 500w psu and a GTX 460 vcard. so far ive swapped those two out with what you see above and now im wondering if i need to get a new mobo and cpu

You are going to be fine in MOST titles. Some titles are notoriously bad for CPU use though.

I would expect that you would not be happy with StarCraft II or Red Orchestra 2 performance, as these titles LOVE having fast CPU's.

Most other things, you'll likely never notice the CPU being an issue.

As has been mentioned, it can be difficult to diagnose eing CPU limited by looking at CPU usage alone as the task manager does its magic and moves threads around between cores very fast. Sometimes it may look like you have low loads on each of your cores, when the true case is that one core is maxed out, but that thread is just being moved from core to core really fast.

The best way to determine if you are CPU limited is to fire up the game you want to play with MSI Afterburner, EVGA Precision X or another similar GPU overlcloking tool with Rivatuner based graphs. Make sure you open the graph window and have it show GPU load and framerate.

Then launch your game and play for a while. Quit back out to your desktop and look at your charts. If your GPU is consistently loaded below ~99% then you are CPU limited in the title, as the CPU can not push enough data to keep the GPU busy.

not always, if vsync is off then yes, but if vsync is on its not uncommon to see the gpu usage not at 99% and a solid 60fps.

You are correct, I forgot to mention that Vsync needs to be off for this to be a good measure.

if your X6 1090 is hitting high 60/low 70's, it's your CPU throttling it's self. the max temp for your '1090T' is 62C (see AMD's spec sheet on 1090 below)
http://products.amd.com/en-us/Deskt...2=&f3=&f4=&f5=&f6=&f7=&f8=&f9=&f10=&f11=&f12=

the 'MB' sensor temp is only any good as a gauge for ambient temp inside your case. the reason being as the 'MB' sensor is often nowhere near the hot stuff on the motherboard. these are usually placed either at the bottom of the board or at the end or in between the PCIe slots. most newer MBs have sensors everywhere on the MB, the most important (for AMD rigs) is the NB (northbridge), VRM's (voltage regulator modules) & the SB (southbrige). the NB is generally the hottest chip. as you have an older AMD (cheaper) MB, it'll be missing these important temp sensors. only 3 ways to gauge the temps without integrated chips. temp sensor cable, infrared gun thermometer or the cheapest and most subjective -your finger.

if you continue to test your current setup, use the logging (Start Logging button) at bottom of sensor window. the file outputs to a *.CSV (excel) file. note the log will contain every sensor reading in the window (temps, volts rpms etc).

hwinfo64l.png

you can also use the graph feature (double click on sensor title). opening a bunch of these will quickly use up a ton of screen real-estate tho...
hwinfo64prime95.png

probably provided a 'bit' too much info. in any case you'll need at the very least a better CPU cooler (mentioned examples in last post). replacing the motherboard is next on the cards. personally i try to go cheap on everything for a PC except the MB & PSU. if you decide to replace your MB & cooler you'd be looking at 200-250 (depending on the country). if you switch to intel, a bit more.

something i didn't mention if you're on a budget, you could purchase aftermarket sinks for your motherboards NB/VRMs tho that could be a stop gap at best b/c as someone already mentioned, the power phases on your current MB are a bit average.

at the end of the day, it's up to what you're most comfortable doing, time & budget wise.

Notice I said "I'm still new at this". I didn't realize that the P67 chip set was already antiquated. For somebody on a budget I thought it was a good reccomendation. My apologies for trying to help a fellow gamer.

Nah, your fine. Didn't mean to sound harsh.

P67 is still good but they have been replaced by Z68 and Z77.

CPU matters a lot when you have quadfire. Theres a lot more overhead going on. Phenom 2 at 3.7ghz was still bottlenecking big time in bf3 with quadfire. Dipped into teens around 10-15fps at times. Got a 8120 and overclocked it to 4.6ghz. Now its smooth with no problems. It went from unplayable to really smooth and playable. Getting around 48-62% utilization in all gpus so i am still bottlenecked a little bit. I think it has to do with my resolution though at 1920x1080. With the phenom 2 i was getting 25-32% gpu utilization on all the gpus. I noticed the 8120 likes memory bandwidth. The more faster the memory is set the more frame rates bf3 got more than ghz clocking. Northbridge and memory overclocking makes a good difference. Framerates with 4890 quadfire are good around 60 fps and higher consistently.

i've literally see no change in increasing the north bridge clock, or the hyper transport. It has been absolutely pointless to mess with those clocks for me.

On the old 1055 hex core those settings provided a good boost to performance, no boost with bulldozer.

4890 quadfire? really a single 7970 has more performance. Your likely running to gpu scaling issues as well, the 4XXX series cards didn't scale well with crossfire.

Using 11.12 drivers with the latest profiles. 12.xx drivers don't scale at all some reason. I think if i set the resolution higher i would get more gpu usage. BF3 is more of a cpu hog it seems like. On the phenom 2 x4 all the cores were maxed out at 100% while playing with quadfire and it was bottlenecked big time. Even on quadfire the cpu cores are almost maxed out on a 8120. Other games are doing alright though. Going to try to overclock it to the max once i get some new fans i ordered in. I've had this 4890 quadfire for along time already. Been lasting years lol. The fans sucked at the time but i switched them all to waterblocks awhile back so its all cool. ;)

Edit:

Forgot to mention i am testing and playing in 64 player maps in bf3. So whatever i said is in those big 64 player servers ;). Game runs with a lot higher frame rates in smaller servers.

There were gigantic performance increases in BF3 using the Sandy Bridge i5/i7 chips compared to the Nehalem ones when it comes to testing MP. Since Nehalem is faster than Thuban, it is reasonable to say that your BF3 experience will be greatly bottlenecked. Most games probably don't matter much, but anything online will benefit more from the newer Intel chips than anything from AMD. Online MP gaming is the reason I gave up my Deneb chip for a Sandy Bridge.

Sounds like a Intel fan bout :) I really dont see how them high priced CPU's will make MP any better than what he is running.. Sense alot of that has to do with your ping.. ANd if he is getting decent FPS.. Should be just fine :)

Hardly. For my desktops, I ran strictly AMD from the K6-2 to Phenom II. In fact, I evangelized this to my best friend as well. When pitting his X4 955 @ 4GhZ against my (at the time) shiny new i7 2600K at 4GhZ, BFBC2 MP ran significantly better on my system.

Honestly, the best way to approach this is to take [H] benchmark numbers for this game and compare them to what he's getting using (hopefully) the same testing methodology. I can pretty much guarantee anything massively multiplayer will benefit from the faster network stack processing that the SB/IB chips offer. That's not to say this guy isn't just fine with what he's got, I'm just saying that SB/IB is indeed somewhat noticeably faster.

I don't own the game (I refuse to give any money what so ever to EA) but I do recall hearing that the multiplayer game is significantly harder on the CPU than the single player game, by a huge margin.

I had thought that since BF3 uses multiple cores well, this was less of an issue on a hexacore Phenom II, but I have definitely experienced games in which no AMD CPU in existence, regardless of how overclocked, is sufficient for decent frames (my favorite game, Red Orchestra 2 is an example of this, not even a bulldozer at 4.8ghz is fast enough to push a constant 60fps in a 64 player online game), so I am open to this being the case for BF3 as well.

I had used nothing but AMD CPU's since my Duron 650Mhz in ~2000 until BD launched. I had hoped that BD would be the performance upgrade I needed to make RO2 run well (my Thuban at 4.2Ghz was too slow). I had a 990FX motherboard and was ready for the drop in upgrade, but when the BD reviews came out, I threw in the towel, and bought a SB-E, and now the world is beautiful all the time :p

I'm no Intel fanboy.

My CPU History:
Intel 286 12mhz -> Intel 48xsx25 -> Intel Pentium 90Mhz -> Intel Pentium 120Mhz - > Intel Pentium 150Mhz -> AMD Duron 650 -> AMD Athlon 1200Mhz -> AMD Athlon 1400Mhz -> Amd Athlon XP 1800+ -> AMD Athlon 64 3700+ -> AMD Phenom II X6 1090T -> Intel Core i7-3930K

My two servers are still AMD (one Athlon 64 3250e and one AMD Zacate E-350) and my stepsons still run AMD Systems (one my old 1090T and the other a Phenom II X2 unlocked to x4 and overclocked to 4.2Ghz) but I fear that unless something changes their next rigs will not be AMD based.

I love AMD and really want them to become competitive again, but the truth is that they are seriously behind Intel today, and there are some titles you just can't run well with any AMD CPU regardless of how overclocked it is.

I guess where i dont really play to much MP, i it doesnt really affect me.. :) AMD said they wasnt going to compete with Intel for awhile.. Said they want to make more price efficient CPU's :) Not really cant compete with intel. But for the price.. intell cant compete with them(my opinion :D ). Ive owned both..(not IB/SB) and both have there ups and downs.

lol you guys are a bunch of clowns.

first a phenom !! is not a thuban. Second thubans performed first gen i7's when all threads were being used.

Red Orchestra 2 runs just fine on my 8120 and dual 7870's. The game scales with the cpu, (its a cpu hog) but systems are able to run it.

anyways the guy doesn't need a new cpu to play battlefield 3, stop being elitist. His cpu will do just fine with his video card and will be Gpu bottle necked. I am beginning to think that most people on this site, care more about what FPS they are getting than actually playing and enjoying the game. Bunch of benchmark racers.

Either we have differing opinions of what "just fine" means, or you are being dishonest in order to justify your choice of platform.

For me "just fine" means frame rates rarely ever drop below 60fps.

1.) RO2 is very very dependent on single thread performance.

2.) On my thuban at 4.2 ghz with my twin overclocked 6970's it would periodically hit 60+ fps but on 64 player servers during busy scenes it would average below 50, and often drop to the low 30s. Clearly not acceptable.

3.) Every single review I have read of bulldozer shows worse single threaded performance at 4.8Ghz than Phenom II @4.2Ghz (max OC vs. max OC)

Thus the conclusion is simple.

so all in all from everything supplied in this thread. Im looking at getting a HAF x Case and a new motherboard + a extra 200mm fan to fill the cases cooling system to solve my issues and complete my computer for the next few years.

Case: http://www./products/?sku=53776
Extra fan (for top): http://www./products/?sku=60722
Motherboard: http://www./products/?sku=62403&promoid=1360

thoughts? dont think i need a new CPU cooler. the ventilation from new case with the fans it comes with should be plenty of cooling + new motherboard should be able to take more stress without throttle... so ive learned. i hope

now here is a new problem i have. i have a belt that holds up my pants. and my pants have belt loops to hold up my belt.. What the fuck is going on O_O

Your links don't work but the conclusion is pretty solid and should help the situation.

The HAFX is pretty nice. I have a HAF932 and replaced all but the intake 230 with 120mm fans which certainly do a great job.

i average around 60fps. It does drop in the low 50's at times, which is fine for me, its still smooth. All you have to do is use core affinity and set 100% of that core to the game. While windows and other tasks use the other 7. (free performance boost)

My FX can go to 5.2ghz. I run normally at 4.8ghz. (just for power draw reasons and well heat) The Phenom 2 is about 18-19% faster clock for clock and single threaded loads.
So yes a thuban at 4.2ghz is a tad faster than a fx at 4.8ghz. well single thread anyways.

BTW my platform was free. (mobo and cpu)

so i am getting my new Motherboard and case tomorrow but i did a quick 10minute log of my hardware and ill share it here encase someone can look it over and give feedback.

LOG

yes which causes my FPS to go from 60-100 to 10-30.

now is it the CPU or the motherboard? because the motherboard i have is known to do this under stress as ive been told.

its due to the high power draw of thuban, and the board not having enough power phases to handle the load.

And then a motherboard vrm pops, and FPS goes from 10-30 to 0-0 ... :D

heh you called it. computer wont start anymore. power shows but nothing on the monitor appears not even bios.

tried old PSU / GPU cant get it started. motherboard must be dead. good thing im getting a new one tomorrow.

i prey i didnt kill my CPU.. how would i check? lol the heatsink fan still spins. if only that ment the cpu was alive >.>

please confirm that these componets WILL work together. i have been told getting a new motherboard = a new CPU unless they are compatable. can any1 confirm this setup will work.

AMD 1090t CPU
Radeon 7970 GPU (was told gpu works on any setup)
GA-990FXA-UD(3-5) not sure if im getting a 3 or a 5 yet.. please give feedback on that too. is there really a difference?
