Does B&W make good subwoofers?

I just found an offer on a B&W ASW600 for 230 bucks. I was originally intending on picking up an X-Sub, but would this be a better bet?

For the price, it's probably a go. I love normal B&W speakers, I have a whole set of them as my mains and surrounds. However I feel their subs are overpriced for what you get, hence I decided to buy an SVS sub instead. But given you are getting a good deal, I think it's a good idea. The B&W subs are not at all bad, just overpriced in my opinion. At $500 (the retail for the ASW600) you can do much better. At $230, you'd be real hard pressed to beat it.

dad recently bought one to match his B&W speakers, it is GREAT cant go wrong with B&W

Nice...i was in a similar situation a while ago...but i decided to spend my xmas credit on something wayy different

Pretty hard to beat an X-sub (for $199) or a HSU STF-1 ($299) at that price range. You aren't going to get a linear response down to 30hz with the name brand subs until you get into a much higher price category. That's why these two subs are popular enthusiast products--performance without the cost. I doubt anything from the major brick & mortar brands is even remotely tuned for a flat response at this price range, or uses this quality of drivers.

Well I decided to go ahead an buy it since I'm already waiting for my X-LS speakers to come.
I think that at the price point it was a good choice. If nothing else, it should be on par with the X-Sub, and that's good enough for me. I was able to try this out before I bought it which was a major convenience, since if I bought the X-Sub I would have had to ship it back if I didn't like it ( I don't like dealing with shipping). It also would have been about 20 bucks more, so, woo!

Pictures of it will show up eventually in the post your pics thread.

The B&W should do better than the x-sub. It's not going to be amazing, but it should be pretty decent.

It is quite common for B&M subs not to be as good as the speakers they make. As far as a good sub goes it depends on your budget.

If you can get the ASW600 for $230 like you said, I would go for it, it is a decent deal at that price. The sub is better for music than it is for HT though.

It depends what you use for; the ASW600 is huge, a little slow for HT but great for classical and jazz. For that price it is ok.

for music probably, but for HT the x-sub is a ported design and that alone will make it better in terms of depth

People actually like the X-sub better for music and less for movies...at least thats the impressions i have collected

So you think the X-Sub will out rumble my Infinity Intermezzos just because the X is ported and the Infinity is sealed? There's a hell of a lot more to a sub than just ported vs. sealed.

If people like the X-sub better for music than movies, then chances are the X-sub is the better sub with a more accurate frequency response, while the B&W has a mid-bass/upper bass hump that makes it stand out (rather than being faithful to the source material).

Which wouldn't surprise me one bit, the North American focus lately has been accurate frequency response/neutrality, the major B&M European brands have always been about a bumped mid-bass for more punchiness and a variable response for "flavor"....although this becomes problematic depending on the playback source.
