So I am looking at building a new system soon and I really want the ability to have 8+ hard drives in my system. However, at the same time I really don't want to have to fit a massive tower case underneath my desk (I caught the SFF bug :)). Is there a product that will allow me to store multiple hard drives in an enclosure and access these drives over a network? I am not really interested in RAID or data protection simply because there will be movies stored on these drives and it really isn't a big issue if a drive fails...

Get a pc & stick it in your closet. Install Linux. Install & configure iscsi-enterprise target. Get an intel pro-1000 pci-e nic for your sff. Flash intel iscsi bios onto it.

Whee, diskless bootable workstation without needing any pxe tricks!

Thats the craziest thing i've ever heard....AWESOME! :)

Ok, consider me a n00b (I ain't one, but I am in certain areas, this being one of them) - can you go into a bit more detail with that process and how it works, either here or perhaps in a PM, or linkage to a FAQ or steps someplace?

I'm definitely interested about the prospects...

It is easy enough to make a small case for 8 hard drives - 2 4 in 3 drive cages is sufficient. Set (hot glue) them under a small case with all the non-drive hardware.

Add a 8 drive controller card to the motherboard.

Add data a power wires between cases.

Actually, what is your actual storage requirements. It may be more cost effective with a 4 drive NAS box with terabyte drives if you are looking for anything less than 4 terrabytes. If you only need 3 TB, you can do Raid 5 for a little backup with 4 drives.

I am running a 2 drive Nas Box, but do not have any media streaming capabilities. It is just a basic file server, but I am very happy withit for what I use it for. It is the Hammer Myshare 1TB that I am running in Raid 1 for 500 gig of storage.
