i haven't been able to really find anything on this, but you'd think there'd be quite a market for modular PSUs for HTPC cases that use mATX power supplies. barring being able to buy one.. how hard would it be to mod an existing PSU to be modular?

How hard would it be to make an existing PSU to be modular? Well, cut all of the wires you don't plan on using and cap them off. Not really modular, or pretty, but you get clean airflow. That's about your only choice, as most modern mATX cases use full ATX power supplies these days. You can get the shorter <160mm long ones, but that's still ATX compliant. There is no modular mATX power supply on the market that I'm aware of either.

Silverstone GD05, for example, is a HTPC that takes as big of an ATX PSU as you can find.

win! now.. to figure out how to get one, since it's in store only. :-(

It's an Ultra PSU though. So it's more than likely of low quality. It only has 21A on the +12V rail, which puts in the range of 250W to 300W PSUs in terms of usable power. Most decent 400W PSUs have 27A or more. Its UL number shows that it was built by "SHEN ZHEN RUISHENGYUAN TECHNOLOGY CO LTD", a relatively unknown company. Thats three red flags right there.

Are you that desperate for a modular mATX PSU that you're willing to go with crap quality PSU that has a decent chance of killing your PC?

400W is way more than plenty for what it needs to run.. honestly, 230w would probably cover it. it's going to be driving an old socket 939 board, Athlon II x2 4200+, PCI-E video card, one (small) HDD, and an optical drive. not exactly a power house. from what i've seen, there's not much else out there that's higher quality. Diablotek? Athena? Logisys? Startech?

I didn't make myself clear: Due to the fact that it's an Ultra and made by an unknown manufacturer, there's no solid proof that it can actually provide even half its rated power let alone that full 400W. Not to mention that its power layout puts it in a 250W to 300W PSU range which means that PSU was over-rated in terms of wattage.

This Seasonic might also fit as well:

However, if you honestly don't care about that old system and can find that Ultra PSU for $25 or less (any more than taht and it's a total ripoff), then go for that Ultra.

htpc cases use a wide range of power supplies, SFX, TFX, standard ATX, FlexATX...which case are you using?

it's an old D.Vine 5 HTPC case. definitely uses an mATX PSU. i pulled one out of it, that i'd like to replace. (doesn't have any SATA, don't know how old it is, or the condition)

i guess i should elaborate more. the case i'm shopping for has NO cable management. it's pretty much just a box. the motherboard mounts directly to the bottom. the HDD and optical mount in the middle, in the front. ideally, i'd like modular, so that i can control the types and amounts of wires in the case, since there is no room for extraneous drives. i suppose, if i go with something like the seasonic, i'd have to desolder what ever i'm not using, since there's no place to store it, as well as sleeving the cables..

There's no such thing as a mATX PSU...
If you get a PSU that matches your max load, you won't have that much extra wires to begin with.

He needs an SFX12V form factor PSU, which is sometimes called a mATX PSU. This means the back exhaust panel of the PSU must be 125mm x 64mm, but it can vary in depth from 100mm to 130mm.

Here's a review of the case, which demonstrates clearly that it won't fit the Ultra X4. This is due to the raised fan which would be conflicting with the space where the motherboard goes.

Danny Bui had a good suggestion with the FSP 450W PSU which is actually much the same as a Silverstone ST45SF. But those are not modular units. There is a modular Silverstone ST45SF-G being released soon: 2 weeks - 2 months depending on your region.
