Does anyone else hate PCI-E 1x

Yeah, some cards are a bit large for just using PCIe X1.

Use a vertical case like the FT02? :D

You're not crazy. I have the same problem with PCIe 1x Ethernet cards. They work themselves loose every couple months on one of our workstations at the office.

The card brackets are typically cheap and the short connector offers zero support.

I have an FT02 as well.

Vertical mount cases like the FT02/Raven cases are better in terms of gravitational strain (in a normal tower case with horizontal mounting of add on cards, the PCI-E slot is going to take lots of the strain of the card's weight, especially if you happen to put the case down hard, or if there is heavy vibrations/impacts nearby), but it doesn't do anything for external wires twisting cards that they're attached to. In fact, with the FT02, wires have to be bent quite abruptly so you can put the grill lid/cover on, so that can actually cause more strain and twist the card even more.

So a vertical mount tower, or desktop/HTPC case can only help with cards sagging under their own weight.

Ah, I never considered that.

I currently don't use anything in those slots. So I have a different view. I think they are useless. lol

I do not PCIe1. I have quite a few PCIe 1x network cards at work. And a capture card or two at home with a PCIe1 interface. I do hate sound cards though.
