Does any one use H2O cooled HDD's?

Some guy posted a picture of his AquaComputer block for his HD.
But seriously, what's the point of watercooling a HD? I don't think lowering the temps on it with water rather than a simple, slow 120mm fan will increase the HD's life that much more...

The HD is bound to fail (i think) as a result of other reasons first, before it fails because it consistantly ran 31C with a fan as opposed to 25C (just an example) with WCing...

I think the only HD's worth watercooling are Raptors and the ultrafast SCSI's. They really do get hot and watercooling works so why not?
 
Yeah, normal 7200 drives don't need to be watercooled unless you're the type of person who just has to have everything.
 
My harddrives went from 45c to the low 30c when watercooled via the aqua computer blocks. Nice plus it makes them less noisy.

Nor are they substantially noisier. Before the Raptor's were RAIDed (SMART info is inaccessable from a RAID array) they were within 1c of the Seagate sata drive that serves as data storage and during simultaneous defragging (via O&O Pro) actually seem quieter.

Fooling around with a laser thermometer and a running harddrive showed me that the main heatsources on a HDD were the area around the drive motor and the PCB...NOT the sides of the drive as commonly held. Although it would be simple for the manufacturer to incorporate waterchannels into the casting of the drive body, I have yet to see an aftermarket cooler that properly addresses these areas so IMO adding drives to a waterloop is not terribly beneficial.

Absolutely correct so it was unlikely you would see any difference with the DD cooler you were using. That is why the AC, Koolance, and others work so well. It gets rid of the PCB and spindle heat and also quietens them down as well. :D

I had a custom waterblock made for my drives but I am trying to go for an almost noiseless system. Turns out it didn't work well anyway due to the lack of surface contact. I am currently getting another block made for the other side. Also keep in mind that I will have 9 hard drives stacked in closely together. This essentially heats the drives on top up a lot hotter then the bottom ones. I turned off my cooling fans on my drive to make sure I even needed to cool them and the top 4 drives when defragging were in the 70C temperature range. Call me crazy but I think that just might be too hot! Here is a picture of what I have setup so far. I am going to make a new cage that allows the waterblocks to hold all the drives in place without using the frame that came with the case.

Wouldn't the point be to eliminate fans though? Personally, I'd love to get a water setup and eliminate EVERY fan except those on the rad.

Thats pretty stupid for things in your case that need cool air on them like mosfets and the like.

It's a great idea, but unfortunately I think you'd be better served by placing a 99.9% silent 120mm fan blowing slowly on the HDDs. IMHO in order to properly cool a hard drive you would need to slather those things in some sort of TIM to properly interface with the block....I don't think anybody really wants to do that.

Mosfets are heatsinked on DFI boards last I checked.

Maybe I didn't mean that 100% literally. You're still going to need intake to bring cool air in for the rad fans to blow out (assuming the fans are blowing out of the case). On my case, I have a 2x80mm intake which is definitely noisier than the 120mm fan I have modded into the side panel and probably draws in less air than the 120mm fan. If I could ditch the 80mm fans, that'd be sweet.

Nope, she was talkin about the one that goes on the bottem. She has a nice little collection of the coolance ones wtih the water-bag interface thats kinda neat too.

That is the reason I don't use those coolers because you need one of these thermal pads for it to work well. I prefer the Koolance HD coolers because you don't need the extra expense of a thermal pad.

Convection cooling works great in some cases. :)

And the Koolance coolers keep your drives at what temp?
Which is how much better than they were before?
 
IMO cooling hard drives is a matter of preference. You either feel the need or you don't.

However, like a sweet setup like Jiggamans, it will remove a considerable amount of heat that would otherwise be in the case. Sure, a couple of fans in the right place would probably be just as efficient, but many of us want the minimum amount of fans in our systems - but you do need some airflow in your case for sure.

In hindsight, I should have gone for the Koolance hard drive coolers, as they look to be much better at transfering the heat from the surface of the hd's. Hopefully the use of the thermal pad between the hard drive and the AC Aquadrive will help a lot. I'm cooling WD 74Gb Raptor and WD 400KD drives, hot and noisey little buggers!
