I just helped a friend build a new system with an i7-3960X and Radeon HD7970 in a SilverStone FT03.

I he hasn't given me his temps. yet when he's stressing the 7970, but its idle temp. is usually around 60C.

He leaves it running all the time (he runs BOINC) and he games as well.

After a few hours of folding (100% CPU usage), temps. for the 3960X sit around 48C for three of the cores and up to 58C for the rest of the cores.

He's using a Zalman CNPS9900-Max:

He could have gone with a better cooler, but his Vengeance RAM gets in the way of pretty much all of the better air-coolers and the radiators on the Corsair liquid coolers.

Do those temps. look ok? Are the cores with the higher temps. being "used" more by BOINC?
 
If they are all at 100% and you are getting that much of a difference in temperature, then it sounds like the mount might be slightly off (theres air pockets or it isn't making proper contact or the base of the coler isn't flat). But there is nothing wrong with those tempretures. Anything under 90c is fine.

60c idle for the 7970 idle sounds pretty high. Sounds like it isn't getting enough air. But as long as the card isn't getting too hot under load (over 90c), it doesn't matter so much.
 
Yeah those temps are definitely fine. Some video card manufacturers let their cards run hot at idle in order to keep the noise down, so idle temps aren't really a big concern on GPUs either as long as the fans spin up under load. 58C for a processor is no problem at all.

As for the heatsink, I put a ruler on it before mounting it and the base is perfectly flat. I used a small caliper too to make sure it was mounted evenly (all four screws in and screwed in the same amount).
 
on my 2700k my last core is 2-3 c higher than the rest but idles at 24 on 2nd core. your temps should be alot lower, i have vengence memory too and my cm hyper n520 fits in without hiting the memory and works very well but idk if its 2011 capatable
 
I don't think his temps. should be lower than a 2700k's. The 2700k is a 95W TDP unit while the 3960x is a 130w TDP unit.

The Vengeance works fine in his setup.
 
Yeah, the only thing that can be considered "High" is the idle of the GPU, but then again if you're using BOINC and it utilizes the GPU that is actually not bad by a long shot.
 
Yeah, he has BOINC launch at startup, but don't know if he configured BOINC to use his HD7970.

This is what Catalyst Control Center showed when I opened it earlier (the PC had been running for a few hours):
GPU Clock: 500MHz
Memory Clock: 1375MHz
Temperature: 60C
Fan Speed: 30%
