Do I NEED a UPS?

Whats a good UPS to get thats somewhere under $170-$180 for my system in sig. Not as much concerned with uptime numbers and wattage as I am with voltage filtering etc.

Is something like this good to get for my rig?

I read through this whole thread so the above is a True Sine Output UPS which is the best by APC, right?

Yes the APC Smart-UPS SC 620 is fine & "True Sine Wave" is only important if you are going to be running on batteries for over an hour.

Is that the only Time True Sine wave kicks in...or does it also smoothen out voltage input during regular operation?

This page from APC indicates that this model is still stepped approximation.

That's probably what the SC series is - stepped wave but all the other toys from the SmartUPS line. That's why it is only $145.

Would it be good for a house with 50 year old wiring? Because I'm pretty damn sure the 50s era wiring in this house is affecting my overclock stability.

Nope. If you want UPS which would give you perfect stability you need VFI solution (Voltage and Frequency Independent) aka Online becouse it transfers input AC into DC and then inverter inside transfers it to AC (I was going to say 230V@50Hz but then remembered it's US forum :D )

Offline UPS (cheapest stuff) will only start working when the input voltage drops below specified tolerance range. Any frequency or voltage disturbances which are inside this tolerance range are still transfered to loads.

Line Interactive UPS - is like offline but it also has a second small inverter which allows it to sligthly correct voltage levels at the output.

So to seriously improve quality of power in your house you would need to invest something around 400-500$ into online ups.

Edit: but of course cheap ups would still protect you from blackouts which probably are more dangerous.

There are several, ever increasingly more expensive topologies, available to provide protection up to "ultimate levels" where all the incoming AC does is charge the batteries, while the system(s) are continuously on battery power. These are professional level UPS solutions used in financial transaction processing, Wall Street & certain military applications.

IMO nothing beyond a Smart BackUps solution would be required for 95%+ of home & home/office systems.

Always Build with the Best!
Dave:)
