Do I need a PSU upgrade?

I'm considering up grading from my i7 920 to a 4690K and I am wondering if I could keep using my current PSU. I currently have a Corsair HX750.

Thanks for any info I can get.

No need unless you just want a fresh new one to go with your new chip and motherboard. If not, just keep yours. 750 is plenty of capacity (I'm assuming you're not running quad SLI or something crazy like that).

That is still a good PSU. If it has been stressed then the capacitors might be worn somewhat but being a relatively high quality unit they should still have years left. I've used lots of relatively high-power electronics with capacitors 20+ years old that were still in good enough shape to work well.

If you get a new one, you can buy a more efficient one, but that one is still decently efficient. Then again, with electricity rates as high as they are these days (in my area, anyway), it might be worth saving whatever power you can.

Get an estimate of your average power usage from the PC and factor in the efficiency of that PSU vs a newer 80plus gold or platinum units. Factor in your electricity rate and see how long the payoff will take for the power savings. If you leave your PC on all the time, you might pay for a new PSU over a couple years, but obviously with up front cost.
