I am moving from Texas to Louisiana, I currently have my PC set with a static IP addresse. can I keep this IP address, or do I need to make a new one?

I only ask cause I have heard stories of people pinging a stolen machine cause it had a static IP on it.

Thanks
B

Definitely yes you will get a new static IP. The only way I've heard of, of know of how to ping a stolen PC is if they had some form of dynamic DNS setup, and when they see their computer go back online, they have the Dynamic DNS to find their IP.

Is this LAN or WAN we're talking? You can't simply set a static IP on your WAN connection. Getting one of those costs extra and is not always available at all for residential.

Yeah, rereading that I think he means a local IP address. Bluntablo, is the static IP address you are talking about one of these numbers

192.168.x.x
10.x.x.x

If so, then if you bring your router with you, and configure it for the new ISP you will be fine. Your internet address will change, but chances are that won't matter unless you are hosting something like a game server etc.

Don't steal computers then you won't have to worry about this.

Im on comcast and I followed an online guide to set my IP and forward some of my ports. Yes, Im pretty sure it is for my Lan, but I had to get the IP address from comcast to actually set it all up, My real concern was if I needed to re setup all my devices or set it all back to automatic so there was no issues when the new place comes to setup my internet.

Thanks

Unless you have a direct allocation or assignment from ARIN, you're probably getting a new IP address.
