hi, I just ordered a nvidia 285 video card (1 gig)for my game computer, the cpu is AMD 6000+
dual core with 4 gigs of ram running 64 bit vista business.

Am I going to be now cpu bound?

I mostly play City of Heros/Vllians,and Morrowind.

I play at 1920X1200 on a 28 inch viewsonic lcd

Thank you

A new CPU would definitely help, but you should honestly try it first. If you can game happily the way it is, then leave it alone. If you demand more power, a new CPU may be in order.

with that cpu you would likely get the same performance out of a gtx260. all the X2 cpus are getting pretty dated and certainly cant keep a gtx285 fully fed. I have no idea about those games you listed so just see how it works for you like the other guy said.

Those games are pretty old. Even if the 285 only run at the speed of a 260, you'll still be able to max them out. Just try it out and if you have any problem, just upgrade. If not, then you really don't have to/

well my point was that if he is going to keep that cpu then he might as well saved 150 bucks and gone with gtx260.

Send back that GPU and order a 9800GTX+ if you are going to be using that processor. Anything above a 9800GTX+ is going to be bottlenecked to hell with that processor.

Isn't the answer to this question always yes even if it isn't? :)

In all seriousness though, the gpu is probably going to give that processor trouble, but whether you'll notice it with those games is something else entirely. For comparison (not a very good one necessarily) I had to upgrade my 4400 x2 when I got a gtx 260. I imagine a 285 might pose the same problem to a 6000.

Yup. I have an 8800 GTX with an X2 6400+. Decided to get a factory OC'd GTX 260 last fall. I saw a couple FPS more in most games. Waste of money without a good CPU to support it. The others are absolutely right - if you can't upgrade your CPU at this time you might as well not go above the equivalent of a GTS 250.

well i am planning to upgrade in the fall, thinking about a I7 920, microcenter has them for
229.00 on sale,i am not really concered about more high end FPS,just don't like going to a area and dropping to 15 fps, got the 285 on sale for 279.00,only abut 50 more than the 260 was at microcenter.

well with your cpu your minimums will still be quite low in many games. as several of us have mentioned you would have gotten the same performance with a lesser card. you got a decent deal but its not going to be put to full use. I personally would have gone with a gtx260 from wherever I could get the best deal. that would have likely been close to 100 bucks saved.

So your already planning on a cpu/system upgrade, if that's the case, keeping the card sounds reasonable.
