Yo all!

I got an XPS 720 with a QX6700 with 4GB of ran and Windows 7. Havent gotten the processor yet but I plan on overclocking it a tad. I guess another question is will this thing need new memory.

I also have a GeForce 280gtx. Can i just buy a 480 for some very upgraded performance or would i not get the whole performance out of it because my systems a little slow.

Personally, as another 280 owner, I'd hold on until either Southern Islands (ATi's next offering this fall) or a fixed Fermi with all the stream processors enabled and the heat issues fixed.

As awesome as the 480 or the 5870 seems, I can still comfortably run any game I want to play at 1920x1200. Can't quite do max settings anymore, but pretty damn close.
 
Yeah i think I'm going to wait. Gotta wait until I cant run newest games on naything near max before spending money is justified. And Xbox Ports dont count...

First and foremost, find out what PSU you have. The GTX 480 uses more power than the GTX 280.
 
Hmm. Really good point. I remember worring about getting the 280 to work. The 720 didnt have a relativly big one fromw what I understand to get people to upgrade to the next one.

Suppose I did have the power requirements, worth it or spend the extra few bucks for a new system?
 
your cpu and memory are fine. and you may not really need to upgrade at any rate I would be in hurry to jump on fermi until its fixed. and we do need the rest of your system spec

in short just what everyone else said.
 
IIRC, the 720 has a 700w psu and the 720 Red has a 1kw. You can just take the side panel off, it should say right on the side of the psu.
 
solid machine. no need to update. 4gigs is fine for ram. OC it for the win, although dells are kinda bad at OC. look at getting another mobo, hopefully you dont have one of those god awfull BTX mainboards.

I had a BTX dell system, it was a pain in the ass, you cant do much to it besides adding ram.

Should be able to the the BSEL on that processor - take it from 2.66ghz to 3.33ghz using some tape ;) no other changes ... im 9/10 using the 6700's ... and about 30/30 using 6600 series....
