DLSS 5 - Generative AI

Think it's safe to assume if using 2x 5090s in the demo then in the lab it's 1x 5090
could be a rtx 6000, maybe it use about all the 32gb of vram of the 5090, the model used could be the original that has yet to be distilled into a small one.

Geforce Now having 48GB vram vGPUs per session available could maybe a first way to make this broadly available (all that vram is a bit wasted right now).
The cynic in me says this is all part of the plan. You want synthesized "photo-real" graphics and can't afford a $10k PC (with 2x halo GPUs and 96gb DDR5)? Not a problem, just sign up for our next-gen cloud service and enable our rent-seeking bullshit.

It does look cool though... I bet this tech could put an end to the remaster craze that's been going on with older games for the past decade. You take something like DLSS5, crank it to 11, and every old game that supports it instantly has a fresh coat of paint (assuming it works with the photo-realism art style).

I don't think that's the single GPU it's running on in the lab because they talk about being able to ship+run on 1 GPU - which would mean they're only talking to the owners of RTX 6000 which isn't even really a gaming GPU but a workstation GPU? Doubtful IMO.

Worst case scenario IMO this ships + runs on 5090 only when launched from what's been said so far - but we're all going off broad non-specifics so we'll have to wait and see for more.

Every game is going to look like this:

I'm curious what kind of horsepower it's going to require. I like the visuals, but am I gonna need a 7090 to take advantage?
I imagine that depends. Are you cool with the cloud asset toggle?

This isn't running local on anything reasonable. This is going to be the in for Cloud assets. Both MS and Sony have been patenting asset streaming to save download size on their consoles.
This will be an extension of that I'm sure.

I can't wait to not be able to purchase the GPU required to run this feature due to a lack of inventory or a cartoonishly high retail price.

generative model can be distilled-quantized in much smaller one without loosing much quality to them, the released version will be much smaller (under that logic it would be only rtx 5090 owner rigth now, which is barely better), but do not forget that Geforce now are running on RTX 6000 and vGPU session have 48GB, early release on them would not be that big of a surprise.

It looks like an AI instagram filter, not surprised some people like this AI slop though.

Game developers will probably be forced by Nvidia to use this, so games will get even worse looking, especially those taking the financial incentive from Nvidia to launch AAA titles.

As long as it stays entirely optional I don't care if the slop filter is there ultimately
Like DLSS / RTX is optional? Yeah, it's only technically optional if the game is designed around it.

I haven't seen a distilled model that wasn't a huge step down from the already sloppy full version. So much so that I'd almost always opt to use the full model even if it takes 5-10 times longer to get a result.

Hey on the upside. This might be the slop that finally forces a new direction. I mean probably not, but maybe.

Someone just has to invent a sloppy enough viral nvidia nick name.

If gamers let this slide. The next obvious step will be streaming AI assets.

I guess I'm the outlier, I think this looks really cool. I would imagine after it gets up to speed it shouldn't even be that hard to run, your cell phone can do this live with your face filters already.

I mean even if we disregard the character models, the water reflections and sewer grating details look worse on DLSS 5 to me. The ambience of the setting is completely changed from cloudy and dreary to some weird overcast with weird lighting in the background.

The geometry and textures of the models are the same DLSS 5 is just affecting the lighting of DF says in their video

Dang I was too focused on the foreground to notice that at first. It does really flatten it out. Hopefully they can improve that in the future.

Is it my imagination or have they somehow lowered the quality of the RE9 characters face on the left side. I haven't played the game but in all the screenshots I've seen, the face looks better than this.

The raindrops making the ripples are pretty much gone in the DLSS 5 screenshot.

This is just going to make all games have that same AI filter look on top. I'd rather have the original intended artstyle/designs of the devs. I wouldn't mind using it just for better environmental details/lighting though.
yep, it will make the characters look mundane

i’ve seen this same scenario before in the GTA Online Modding community feeding into chatgpt

everyone looks the same

It's just better lighting...lol.

It looks like better lighting in some cases, but not all. Some of it is fundamentally changing the appearance of materials in the game in unintended ways. I'm not sure if there's a fix to it, maybe a better model that just affects lighting.

I know. There's a running joke from GN now on X. This one had me LMAO.

That does seem to be the case with people. Any time there's anything DLSS except for spatial upscaling (that has been around long enough it's OK with most people now) there's hate on it.

There's four big things people need to keep in mind about this:

1) Developers can tune it and work with it to get what they want. It doesn't sound like it is fixed function.

2) Yes big changes in lighting can equal big changes in look of things like faces. For a good example prior to this, look at the difference in Resident Evil between Path Tracing and Ray Tracing. The faces look very different, despite being the same models and materials, it is all in the lighting differences.

3) It is OPTIONAL, just like frame gen, ray reconstruction, etc, etc. If a developer doesn't like it, they aren't required to use it.

4) People have been disrespecting "artistic intent" with Reshade for years. Go to almost any game on Nexusmods and some of the top mods will be various "realism" or "cinematic" or whatever HDR shaders. I tend to think they look like bad, but clearly many people like them, and none of them are respecting what the developer intended.

I think the real angy with this is because it is "AI" and people are just being angy about that without thinking (remember that DLSS upscaling is "AI" as well) and because it sounds like it is going to need a 50 series minimum, and probably a beefy one at that and there's sour grapes from the people who don't have that. "It's not that I can't run it, it is that I don't WANT to run it!"

from the Digital Foundry first impressions video: "This is probably the most impressive, by quite a lot, game demo I've seen in my time at Digital Foundry"
