Divinity: Original Sin

The first question you can add stats and elemental dmg with Tormented Soul and Elemental essense or potions (can't remember which) respectively. I think you can use poison potion to add poison dmg. Not sure if it changes the color.

There are some, the fletcher would have arrow head and arrowshafts, either the weird cat mage or the enchanter in the marketplace has some ingredients. I usually find so much lying around I don't go looking the buy.

Yea thanks! I was able to make a poison flask and add poison damage to a new bow (sweet!), though it stayed white. I have only ever found one Tormented Soul though, so i didn't want to waste it on a level 9 bow. I'll have to check the vendors every level for tormented souls, essences, and sinew/bowstrings because they seem really rare and handy for crafting good weapons.

Thanks for the heads up on where i can search for these ingredients!

The more i play with the crafting, the more i like it. The only flaw is that to do it efficiently, the character you interact with should really be the crafter so you're not trying to send mats to another for crafting purposes. On my next playthrough i'll definitely spend points to make my 'main' character the crafter.

Has anyone noticed any real benefits from charisma/reputation?

tormented souls seems to drop off demonic things, I think you get the first one from the fight with Evelyn. I think I've found 4 or 5 so far and yea I've saved them, they add +str and something else to weapons but doesn't work on bows, for bows you need Sextant which adds +dex and something else. Sextants have to be found or bought. you know you can improve weapon damage slightly by throwing them on anvil right? doesn't cost anything. The anvil will also get rid of speed penalty for heavy armor also.

I think Charisma only helps you in the silly rock/paper/scissor game, no real need to dump points into it imo, which I have btw, I hope I reach the part of the game where I can respec somewhat soon.

Jahan comes with crafting skills but yea I made my archer main the crafter anyway, not really efficient but me and my buddy didn't read a game guide and do the silly min/max thing,

Damn... in this whole playthrough i've only found 1 sinew (need two to make a bowstring) and 0 sextants. Part of the RNG i supposed. I also had to buy the 1 tormented soul i have from a vendor. Guess i'm getting shitty rng on these good crafting mats. Ah well, I'm only playing on normal so it doesn't really matter. When i play on hard or with the "source" difficulty mod next playthrough I imagine i'll be crafting way more as well as using more consumables.

Yea I restarted once to do a better job of min/maxing, but still took the Politician trait to boost Charisma at the cost of Intelligence since my archer is my main character and so i typically interface with NPC's with him. However, i haven't noticed anything explicitly benefiting from that charisma. Seems like they could have fleshed that out a bit more. Of course, I haven't really played without charisma either, so maybe the dialogue aspects change.

So today a problem arose. When entering the castle at a certain section if I use a firebolt spell the game crashes and windows closes it? Im using upgraded drivers, as of today, and can't think what the problem would be.

WOW....spell use is crashing the program. I've played for days and no problems now this.
Any ideas?

Any spell? I'd post on larians forums.

just posted there, when you first enter the hidden door to the castle if i use a fire spell it crashes and upstairs before the burning room if I use a frozen spell it crashes. The funny thing I was playing this same room over and over using the spells and no problems....maybe a corrupt save file?

The rock paper game is important if you're a min maxer though. There are a lot of "neutral" groups, particularly immaculates, that you must befriend or they attack you. If you befriend them you get experience, and then can just turn around and kill them for double the experience.

or you can cheese it and just abuse quickload/quicksave for the paper rock scissor thing.

I do that with chests too, so now I'm wasting most of my time reloading...

I wasted almost an entire evening doing that once. So the second I loot a box or kill a boss and loot drops i save to prevent me from going back lol

game decided to cure itself somehow and is working correctly. Go figure.

Just killed the Spider Queen and her young with my level 11 party. Sweet.

Quiet thread today. Anyway. Yesterday I fought the guys in the prison in the basement to free the servants. I forget the name...dumb. I kept dying over and over and then had a great idea that actually worked. Before talking to Ben on the table I placed all the items that could move and put them in front of the doorway. After talking to Ben the fight should take place but no one could enter! I was able to stand on the inside and throw oil and fire and burn most of them. There were only three left and it was easy then to come out the door and kill them. Very satisfying if somewhat long.

not really sure where you are, I haven't made any progress in a few days cause my buddy is on a sit com watching binch or something.

I'm in the prison. Just spoke to Nolan and freed the prisoners.

oh yea I did that, actually ended up pissing off the queen of the orcs or something and just wiped everyone in that town.

I've just started reading this thread a bit, as I've just learned a bit more about this game. I didn't initially pay any attention to it, because from what I remember the original game was more or less a cheap copy of the other RPGs of the time. From what I've read though this game is looking better and better to me. I've been reading about a lot of inspiration and similarity to Ultima Seven which is one of my all-time favorite RPGs. (Along with pretty much the rest of that series, even the ones other people don't like. Pagan is one of my favorite games ever for example.) Anyway, I'm finding it difficult to not buy this game, and that means I'll probably have it by this weekend. :D

I was just wondering if any like-minded Ultima fan could elaborate on just how similar it actually is to the games it supposedly drew inspiration from. I really want something that will pull me in. Something that has worlds that get one's imagination going. One of the things I loved about the later Ultima games is that the worlds contained parts of history that weren't necessarily a part of the game. Places that just made you want to explore to see how much you could learn about them. Even if they weren't a part of a quest (or main quest.) Basically, I guess I'm looking for a single player game that brings back a little of the magic of the older games. From what I'm gathering this is as close as anything has gotten, or will get for some time. Thoughts?

Regarding immersion, I feel it's lacking. While there's tons of text to read and stuff, the lore is a little thin and altogether the game doesn't take itself too seriously. Don't expect Planescape Torment levels of immersion. That said though, i have been immersed into the game... just not the lore or the story too much. More with my characters and their journey. The story is interesting enough to make me want to keep playing, and there's tons of sidequests and things that catch you off guard and mix things up.

The combat is also incredibly fun and the mechanics are unique and interesting.

Thanks! That's not necessarily something that would deter me, so that's good. Is there a lot to explore off the beaten path in the world? This is something that really pulls me into games. For example, and I'll use an Ultima game again. In Pagan, I'm wandering through the torax herder's fields. I see a pile of wood scraps in front of what's basically a cliff. I move them, and there's a cave there. I'm expecting a little cave with maybe a chest in it, but there's a long hallway followed by a set of ancient partially ruined chambers. Continuing through it eventually brings you to some of the most powerful armor in the game. However, it's completely left to the player to have either found it, and possessing the necessary skills to get through it, or having read a book about it by chance, and then setting out to find it. (whoa, sorry for the run-on) :D Anyway, that series is full of things like this. You may never even come across it. If you do, you may have read about it in a book. Someone might have casually mentioned it in a town. Or, you might just discover it, and pry the secrets out of it yourself. This sort of thing, the sense of discovery, especially of something ancient and forgotten, is what really pulls me into a game. I'm looking for something with a bit of that.

I haven't ever played an Ultima game, but what you describe is most definitely in this game. They let you make custom notes on the map, and I am constantly making my own notes. Things i notice that i feel may be important later, or something which doesn't make sense. I'll make a note and go back later when i find another clue to the puzzle. Plenty to explore off the beaten path too, although if you're a completionist type like i am, you'll end up exploring everything you can find anyway =P

Quests will take you to most places on the map, but with the complete lack of quest markers, you have to judge for yourself where you think you should go. This leads to much exploring.

And your example I've encountered in the game. The cave didn't yield the best gear in the game (as this game has random loot), but i had passed it on several occasions because I didn't try moving barrels around. I just happened to cast a fireball at a chest to blow it up, and it hit some barrels nearby, revealing a hidden passageway.

I love this game but I'm getting frustrated trying to figure out what to do next. The clues are so random and vague. I find myself Googling for solutions which I never do. I'm not looking for solutions just the next step.

yea some of the puzzles and the vagueness of some of clues, and some clues are very hidden in random locations makes me think whoever designed them just hates people in general.

I'm sure I'll feel right at home then. :D I remember quite a few games that were like this over the years. I'll spend a ton of time figuring stuff like that out. If it gets to the point of being ready to physically throw something, then I have no reservations about looking up a hint. :D I'll typically exhaust everything I've got before doing it, but I never feel bad if it's something that's obviously obscure. So many adventure games I used to play were ridiculously fun, but borderline idiotic with some of their puzzles. Think I'll be able to handle that here.

The only puzzles in RPGs or Point and Clicks I ever hated were ones that had to be completed on a certain day at a certain time. Either waiting around for it to get to that time, or realizing that you just passed that time and don't have a saved game before it.

Stuck on the placement of the circle/square pendants. Have spent about 30 min trying to place the circular one and nothing works...is there a trick to this?

If you're talking about what I think you are, I split my party in two had an amulet on each side to place at nearly the same time

Is anyone playing this on a low powered system? I have a secondary Atom 330 rig with NV Ion graphics.

Make sure the right pendent is on the right side of the wall, there is two. I also split my party up as someone else mentioned.

Love updates, but won't get to see many of this stuff until my next playthrough, which is annoying considering how long it takes me to play a game lol

Yeah my bad. I forgot there was a "second" trap door so I had all my party on the same side of the wall.
Thanks

While I consider myself a smart person (some might dispute that) I'm almost going to give up on the game. Like I said before the lack of a clear idea what to do next is more than frustrating. Even looking at my journal is a guessing game. I've made it through a lot, I'm level 17, but now I'm stuck and I don't even know if I want to continue. To bad it's a great game, though vague on how to progress.

Thats my sentiment too, it got old pretty quick.
I will probably try and pick it up again if games are scant.
But with GTA V coming, it might never happen.
