Hi, I have a G-force 9800GT that I want to upgrade. Is Displayport the best connection for large display picture quality compared to DVI and HDMI? Also any difference in quality from the Displayport to Mini Displayport? I will be using the graphic card connection only for picture, since I have a USB audio interface for the sound.
 
Pretty sure you won't be able to see much difference at all between DVI, HDMI, or Displayport.
 
Displayport is the newest tech right, so I would think when choosing a graphic card and a large display displayport should be most important.
 
The image quality will be the same. Unless you have a specific need for display port I do not think you need to care. See people change computers more often than monitors because for the most part monitor tech has been moving very slow. Monitors also typically have multiple input methods supported. Where I work most of the projectors and and many monitors are still VGA, I hardly see any display port except your typical mac user. There is a fair amount of HDMI. People all talk about display port but we already have thunderbolt and at this point in time tons of monitors are still on VGA so I think that it is hardly worth the time or money to even care. The video card with have multiple output options and the monitors will have many input options the chance you run accross a monitors which only has display port is rare.
 
IQ will be identical unless you go with a 10 bit panel monitor, and even then I'm not sure if DVI and HDMI can't do 10 bit as well. Displayport is handy for Eyefinity on a single card, but adoption into lower cost monitors has been slow for some reason so they're still a bit niche.
 
Both DisplayPort and HDMI support deep color (10 or more bits per color channel). However very few consumer monitors natively support 10-bit color over DisplayPort. One example is the Dell U2711.
I think there are a few HDMI deep color monitors, but none have a panel with native 10-bit resolution.

If the price difference is small, I would get a monitor with DisplayPort connector to give you maximum flexibility for future setups.
 
I'm going for the best graphic card and display connection, and what I gather here would be Displayport but not by much. I will be upgrading my graphic card and display and want to know what to look for.
 
I thought tunderbolt is a replacement for firewire like USB for connecting other divices, but not large displays.
 
Thunderbolt combines Displayport with several other connection types. And it has higher bandwidth than Displayport. Higher bandwidth = better picture that can be sent. As far as I know, dual-link DVI has greater bandwidth than HDMI 1.3 and Displayport 1.0. The new Displayport 1.2 has much higher bandwidth, and Thunderbolt has higher bandwidth than 1.2.

Either way, it's all a digital signal. It's much more important to get a good monitor than it is to make sure it has the best connectors. Although, the higher-end monitors do tend to also have the best connectors.
 
Alright so will graphic cards and monitors have thunderbolt connectors any time soon? Is thunderbolt replacing Displayport?
 
I think thunderbolt is going to end up a dead end standard in a few years. It might replace firewire.
 
Dual-Link DVI has slightly less bandwidth than HDMI 1.3/1.4, which has slightly less bandwidth than Displayport 1.0/1.1. It's a moot point, because all three can do 1920x1200@120Hz, and none of the three can do 2560x1440@120Hz. Displayport 1.2 can do 2560x1600@120Hz, but that is a moot point for now because 120Hz hasn't gone above 1920x1080 and does not seem likely to ever do so.

High-bandwidth cabling will get more interesting when the display industry starts taking resolutions higher than 1080p (like 2160p or 4k or whatever they decide is next) to the mainstream, but that isn't happening anytime soon with the TV industry thoroughly distracted by the 3D gimmick, which requires no more than 48Hz on the cable, so higher bandwidth is a non-issue for the duration - maybe for the rest of this decade.

HDMI, Displayport, mini-Displayport and the digital version of DVI are all exactly, 100% the same for image quality so that is a non-issue.

Displayport and mini-Displayport connect to each other very easily with a simple adapter cable, so that's a non-issue. Single-link DVI connects to HDMI with a simple adapter cable for HDTVs and cheap-ass monitors that have only HDMI.

Almost all Nvidia cards have DVI and HDMI, while very few have Displayport. Almost all AMD cards have DVI, HDMI and Displayport.

Thunderbolt, which is Displayport + PCI-Express, is currently available only on one Apple monitor and Apple's newest lines of laptops and Macs. It is very incompatible right now, with no PC being able to run the Apple Thunderbolt Display.

DVI is the old, heavy duty, tried-and-true, well-understood interface which tends to never get screwed up by monitor manufacturers. HDMI and Displayport are relatively new, and quite a few monitors had bad EDID info on HDMI, but that seems to be much better understood now. DVI connectors and cables are much more sturdy than the others, but they are also much larger and heavier.

So, in answer to the OP, as long as your stuff has DVI or HDMI and you aren't doing something complicated with multiple monitors, you don't need to think any deeper on the subject.

Is Displyport replacing DVI or HDMI and will Thunderbolt be seen on graphic cards or LFD's any time soon?

As I posted above, the slightly better specs don't matter. They can all do the same things and they all can't do more than the others can.

Very few Nvidia cards have Displayport; there is no reason to limit yourself to that because it is a very rare display that has neither DVI nor HDMI (a few Apple monitors are the only ones I know of). I know nothing about Large Format Displays; they rarely come up in discussion in the Displays forum here, because they are intended for use in public spaces like airports.

No. Not even close. The first of the three to go would be DVI, but that is going to take many years, as it is still a standard connector in the monitor industry; even now, few monitors come without it. HDMI has enormous momentum since it is the standard in the TV industry; I would expect it to last several decades.

Thunderbolt is on exactly one Apple monitor and four Apple computers. That is it. No news of it going anywhere else at this time. Forget Thunderbolt, as nice as it is.

Thunderbolt is a variant of Intel's light peak connector, a combination of displayport and an external PCIe connector. Light peak has also appeared on the sony vaio z laptop. I have no idea how the standard will develop in the future, and you probably shouldn't base any purchasing decision on what would probably reduce to idle speculation at this point.

Last I checked the only LFD with displayport were from NEC. Some of the more recent models from other manufacturers may include the connector, but I haven't seen any.
 
Buying "the latest and greatest" doesn't apply here. Displayport is not that. It is merely an alternative.

You will have the exact same image quality using your human eyes looking at the same system on Dual Link DVI, HDMI, and Displayport.

Forget Displayport. There is no advantage to getting a Displayport equipped monitor unless you want to run Eyefinity without an active dongle.
 
It should be noted for the person who made the comment on HDMI specs:

HDMI specs can be implemented partially. While all current AMD and nVidia GPU claim support for HDMI 1.3/1.4, none support over 1920x1200@60Hz via HDMI. That, and no known consumer monitor supports the same for input.
 
Displayport was implemented by AMD as the cheapest way to do Eyefinity on a single card. DVI and HDMI are not going anywhere soon; hell, many monitors still come with VGA connections.

It's getting more common these days. I have two monitors that have DP. It's mostly the low end TN panels that don't have DP, but I believe DP will replace DVI in a few years when Nvidia will jump in the bandwagon too, and your graphics card doesn't even have DVI anymore.
