Are there any disadvantages to driving the DVI input on a monitor from either a DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort output of a graphics card? I need to drive two 1280x1024 monitors and there are many more cards these days available with a DVI output plus a DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort than there are cards with two DVI outputs.

When doing this, is it OK to use a short DisplayPort to DVI port adapter with a standard DVI monitor cable, or is it more desirable to use a full length DisplayPort to DVI cable?
 
no there isn't any down side to it. though you'll want to run both displays through the display ports if you can since some people complain about tearing or what ever(i can't see it so it doesn't bother me). advantage for you is you can use passive DP to DVI and not have to deal with all the problems everyone has had with the active DP to DVI.
 
There's no advantages or disadvantages at your resolution. DVI/HMDI to DVI cables are probably a bit cheaper than DP to DVI but that's about it.

That's a problem, as the vast majority of cards that I'm looking at have a mishmash of ports. Usually it's one each DVI, DP and HDMI.

I don't understand the reason behind active DP to DVI. Surely passive is easier/cheaper to start.
 
Active vs passive is about resolution. At 1280x1024. I'm suzre a passive solution would work just fine
 
So, that sounds like a downside... What if I want to upgrade to a couple of 1920x1200 monitors, which I'm considering?
