I'm planning on getting the 32" sharp 4k monitor when it goes on sale next month.
Here is the problem - my computer is 15'+ from my desk. (I run cables through the wall).

I worried about this too when I first setup like this, but DVI had no problems @ 20' for 2560x1600...

But 4k is something most of us have played with yet..

any ideas?
http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dcable.jsp?prod_id=9147 <-- a powered cable will work.. but.. $200-$300 for a cable seems crazy :(

i'm hoping that a displayport 1.2 @ 15' should work.. but.. to open the wall, put it in and have it not work... :(

wife :p will not like a cable running thru the kitchen :)
ideally (foolishly), i'd like to do the cable'n before I get the monitor.

You seem like an unusual fellow. :) Just test the cable before opening up the wall? Also, if you're spending $5500 on a monitor, what's an extra $300 for the powered cable?

I envy you, by the way. The 32" Sharp 4k monitor looks amazing.

just because i'm crazy to spend $5500 on a monitor.. doesn't mean I want to waste money :)
i'm hoping it last a long time. I think I spent $4000 on the one i'm using now and I've been happy with it for years :) (but now there is a line down the screen when it starts up :( )

but the real question is what games would ppl like to see in 4k on YouTube!

hrmm.. but I guess ppl wouldn't see the diff if they didn't have that rez... maybe..

it will give me something to do :) I upload vidoes (that one no looks @ for games @ 2560x1600 )

No need for super long powered extension:

I have the 25 foot and It's the only 24 gauge DP cable I could ever find. Works great. You just have to use an adapter on the end(s) if your GPU/monitor has full size DP. Don't worry about "specs" on cables, they are all worthless. The only thing that matters is the quality of the shielding, connection ends and the wire thickness when going longer than 15 feet.

thanks vega! I sent an email to the company that makes that cable to ask if it work with 4k rez.

All DP 1.2 cables are spec'd for 4K. What matters more is your GPU. Are you planning on hooking this monitor up to your main rig, or you HTPC? The HD7970 is definitely spec'd for 4K, but I'm not certain with the GTX 480. You'd have to check.

i'm going to use it as my desktop monitor - I plan to upgrade the cards to quad sli when NVidia releases their updated cards in a few month... also.. 480s.. thanks.. I need to fix my sig :) they are 680s :)

the issue is I think 1.2 is only spec'd at 4k at 2-3 meters.

Any DP cable is capable of running the full DP spec of bandwidth (including 4K at 60 Hz) out to a certain distance. There is no reason to email them asking if the cable "can do" 4K.

The DP spec generally allows for ~9 feet (3 meters) to guarantee full bandwidth. Virtually all of those cables are 28 gauge. I have had success with 26 gauge cables out to 20 feet. A 24 gauge cable will be more than plenty for getting 4K out to 25 feet.

A 28 gauge copper wire has a resistance of 212.9 (Ω/km) (mΩ/m) versus a 24 gauge of 84.22. That is why you need larger gauge wire to go further distances to keep the same signal level. Generally these higher quality cables also have very good shielding to help ward off the increased interference of a longer cable.

Would it really be worth while at all to buy a 4k monitor? is the sharp built specifically for use as a computer monitor?
Plenty of good 30 inch panels from NEC, HAZRO, DOUBLESIGHT for half the price. 4k is awfully high resolution, no games made for that resolution have you researched this and reviews from others who may have a 4k monitor and gaming? what kind of graphics cards do you plan on driving such a beast with?
I would think at this point a 2500 dollar 30 inch panel would do the job nicely.

Not really interested in games,
But it would be great if you could test the PWM frequency if it uses such a backlight regulation, it's one of the things keeping me from blindly ordering one.

why 4k at all? not everything is even 1080p yet, everything will have to be upscaled
maybe its just me but I dont see how early adopting 4k makes much sense right now especially at the price. kinda like buyin an italian sports car before there are any paved roads.

You people complaining @ the OP do realize that if not for him and other early adopters, the price of these and other newer technologies would never come down? Same goes for the guys who bought 1080p panels first, or the guys who are buying OLED TVs first.

Please post pics and impressions when you get it, OP, and thanks in advance!

DP is the way to go but i would wait till OLED is out an LCD is not worth spending so much money.
