I am placing this poll here because I am gathering information to further expand our video card evaluations. I am posting this in the gaming forum since most gamers congregate here and it is you all I need the information from. If you don't mind, can you please provide me some info straight from you, the gamer?

Are you playing your computer games on a 4:3 display or 16:9 or 16:10 Widescreen display?

If you are playing your computer games on a Widescreen display what resolution are you playing at?

What benefits to gameplay do you the gamer experience with a Widescreen display versus a standard 4:3 display?

Thank you for all information you can provide!

Well I have a 4:3 screen but i play most games at 1024x768 becauseif i go to 1280x960 i have to drop to 75Hz headacheness
I play CS 1.6 at 800x600, because the heads look bigger to me ;)

4:3, since there's no poll. ^_^

On a side note, I just got a 29" TV for dirt cheap (which is 4:3) SO I honestly don't see myself going widescreen anytime soon.

4:3 CRT here too. If I had the money though, I would be gaming on a nice widescreen LCD.

16:10 LCD (2405FPW).

I play at 1920x1200, but sometimes 1680x1050 if things get rough.

Widescreen is cinematically pleasing, replicating more accurately the dimensions of human eyesight and perception. The benefit is sometimes subtle, but always so perceptible as to make 4:3 screens now impossible to consider. Of course, this is a personal opinion.

16x9, 1280 x 720 or 800x600

Been a WSgamer for years and years

Racing and sports games benefit highly from the widescreen, as well as FPS. Hell even SWG was better in widescreen!

I can't hardly stand non-WS games now.

4:3 19", preferably 1280x960 4xaa(looks good and i get awsome frame rates in CS:S, like constant 80fps+)

16:10
1440x900 ( native on my 19" WS )
Its wide, how can that be bad? Seriously, I won't go back to the 4:3...ever. Plus I have a larger FOV in games then 4:3.

16:9 on 51" HDTV here.

It was rough getting my custom profile set at first since most games don't natively support widescreen gaming on the PC. But after a few tweaks and a few .cfg file changes to a couple of games I got it up and going pretty easy.

Most of the time I just play running @ 800*648 (I think that 648 is the right number) and sometimes I play running at some derivation of 1200*760 or something. Just depends on what is supported and in some cases whatever setting I manually change it to one that looks best.

Of course it is completely painless on the 360. But playing in widescreen period is better in my opinion because it is one step closer to peripheral vision and gives you more to see around you for better awareness, it is especially helpful in online gaming and people that like to sneak up on you.

Kind of hard to see the results without an actual poll...

4:3 for the most part unless the game has some really nice support for 16:9 (ie - HL2) then I might hit up the 16:9 depending on what I feel like doing.

Anyways, on single player games I usually play 1280x1024 with the highest details I can afford.

On multiplayer I usually play 640x480/800x600 @ 120 and 100 hz respectively, on the lowest details as possible.

16:10 @1680x1050 (if as option) if no option and can not tweak....??
WS offers a better FOV, i like it better than 4:3

16:10 1600x1050 (2005fpw)

I do a lot of work in maya 7, xsi 5, and photoshop. It's a great benefit to have the extra screen space.

Same here. I bought my 2005FPW after gaming for 8 months on a widescreen Dell laptop. Never going back to 4:3 again.

What would be your reason for upgrading to a Widescreen for gaming?

Thanks

I've got a 24" CRT widescreen, the FW900. A lot of H'ers have this but I imagine the number of widescreen CRT users is small. However 1920*1200 is not so uncommon being that LCDs use that one too. I use that and I also use 1600*1024. That's a pretty rare res but 1680*1050 like the LCDers use would be fine by me as well. Love my CRT because I can use the 1920*1200 I got used to with my 2405FPW but also go lower for games like CoD2 and FEAR.

I like my widescreens because 16:10 does seem more natural. It sucks when a game that needs to be "hacked" to support it doesn't give you the proper FOV. But that's the worst I've had to put up with in popular games so far (no game has forced me to either go with black bars or have stretched fat guys). Even in that worst case scenario, the 16:10 still fits my vision better. I like to move my screen close and have it fit my field of vision nicely. WIth a 4:3 I either have empty peripheral vision or have to pan up and down when I try to achieve the same.

I know you guys go up to 1600*1200 already, so if you're looking for WS res tests that may help readers, 1920*1200 would not be a bad res to use, with 1680*1050 as a fall back. Kudos for looking out. Widescreen users are not bad at inferring performance from other 4:3 res's in a similar range, but resolutions like 1920*1200 and above certainly have there place especially when you're testing something like SLI. 1920*1200 and the like is no more rare than those willing to go High End SLI or buy a gpu >$500. In fact, they even go hand in hand.

4:3 CRT, playing mostly at 1024x764 or 1280x1024 with everything as high as i can. I don't really see a reason to go WS just yet. I feel quite comfortable with my 17" CRT display.

Dell 17" WUXGA (1920x1200) display with TrueLife for my laptop.

I usually play at 1920x1200, some games at 1680x1050.

I like widescreen more as it has a better field of view and I believe it's more enjoyable/natural. I really wish more games would support it. I don't think I could go back to a 4:3 display.

4:3 CRT. I am worried about posible latency issues with the swap to a widescreen LCD.

OK I already said I use 4:3, but I'll add more info:

I'd gladly switch to LCD if I could afford it, and run it at 1600 x 1200 at least, and hopefully in all applications (meaning I'd need to afford SLI too). Plus I'd have to replace two CRT's.

CRT's are cheap, big (screen size, though they are big phyiscally too), more adaptable to different resolutions, and have yet to hurt my eyes--even though I've spent nearly entire days starting at one before.

Upgrading to LCD's with the resolution I want I'm sure would cost me nearly $2000, if not more (though the SLI setup wouldn't go to waste)

16:10 on both my desktop at 17 in (1280x768) and 12 in (1280x800) on my laptop. desktop will be 20.1 in or 24 in soon.

widescreen means i can browse a webpage and play a movie nicely. also in game it let you see more of the field.

4:3.

Gaming on 16:9 is a mixed bag and IMO not anywhere near mature enough to really consider.

4:3 @ 1600x1800 on a Dell 2001FP (LCD)

Don't wide screens have a odd resolutions (mostly unspported by games?)
