disk image software that's not Norton Ghost?

I have had really lousy luck working with Norton Ghost. It seems like every time I try to use it, the best I can hope for is a wasted hour or two, and the worst was the destruction of the data on the source drive. Their technician's technical skill was matched only by the amount of care that he had for my problems. So, Norton Ghost officially sucks hairy crack.

I do need to get a disk-imaging program, though, because it is a colossal waste of time to repeat the install dance.

What software would you suggest?

Thank you.

How about figuring out your problem with Norton Ghost. It works good for a lot of people.

Or try Acronis True Image

My problem with Ghost may as well be karma... but after the string of failures I've had with it, I just can't bring myself to isntall everything, get everytghing tuned up, then use Ghost to wreck the image so that I can start again. It's failed me three times in a row.

Thank you for the TrueImage suggestion, I'll look into that now.

True Image ftw!!! No surprise I'd say that, however. More options, more usefulness for people that have never used imaging software before (it looks and feels and works like a Windows application even when you boot off the recovery CD it can create - and I highly recommend you do create it, of course), and the ability to live-image Windows while it's running (a constant source of confusion, suffice to say in 2 years of doing it and thousands of live-images I've yet to have even one problem of any kind).

Can't recommend it highly enough...

Sounds like the blame should go with the tech and not the software. Was Ghost used properly, as in not installed, or run from within Windows? Ghost doesn't destroy data on the source drive, unless of course, you choose the source drive as the destination by accident.

There are two reasons why people dislike Ghost, and neither of them are well based:

1) It's from the same parent company as Norton's line of home products
2) Ghost isn't used properly, so people just assume it sucks.

I have a newer version of Ghost that you can install and it's a Windows app. It does live images and has worked flawlessly for me at least 5 times if not more without a problem whatsoever.

..but for some reason, "Live Images" is the wrong way to do it and you should do it the old way.

Instead of rolling your eyes, apply a little logic to the situation. Does it makes sense to image a drive while it's in use? But wait, I see you've used it 5 times successfully. That easily trumps my 9 years of using Ghost in various enterprise environments.

Here we go again. Let see, maybe your 9yrs in the enterprise enviroment is trumped by the bazillion years of all of Powerquest's customers using live images. Do you really think that Powerquest would have made something that was used in places it was and to support it if it didn't work? Hmm. Apply that logic.

Powerquest, eh? How are they doing right now? Oh right, Symantec bought them out, and discountinued their products.

Now, if we are going to bounce logic back and forth, let's examine these facts. The Norton "home line" can be installed in Windows basically to make it easier for Joe Shmoo to backup his PC including his vacation pictures and e-mails.

The Symantec products, meant for businesses, where data is absolutely critical, and could often mean the life or death of a business, is ALWAYS run outside of the OS, and can't be used to image any running OS at all.

If "live imaging" is all that, why isn't it used in the environment where data is most critical? Do you really need to troll on this any further? If you are happy with Live Imaging, go right ahead...it's your data, not mine. I'll stick to the tried and true methods, thanks.

errmmm....

No they didn't. Symantec bought them out, and used the superior software technology of the Powerquest products as a replacement for the cruddier software technology which was in their own. THEN they discontinued the Powerquest product line ;)

Sure, they "borrowed" some of the tech behind the scenes. If not, they wouldn't have had a reason to buy them out in the first place. I wasn't too thrilled that ServerMagic was killed off.

No, look at some of the file properties, they say Powerquest.

There was no borrowing at all. They killed Ghost, brought in Powerquest's product and rebadged it.

In fact, they still include a copy of Ghost 2003 for people that want their legacy product.

Just wanted to interupt for a minute here.

To the OP: I like TrueImage for imaging complete system states. I do them "live" on production servers, with no problems. I have restored from these images (always test your backups) to different hardware and to VMs with no problems.

TLDR - YMMV, but I like True Image.

I've been using Ghost for years and never had a problem with it..and never had any data destroyed by it. I've used Acronis as well and never had a problem with that either.

The Ghost Corporate/Enterprise versions work well. I use to use them all the time and still have a client that uses it all the time(they have like 80 company notebooks that I made a master image for).

The consumer ghost is shit. Yea the new one is based off Powerquest and runs pretty much only in windows. It comes with ghost 2003 though. I bought it for a client a while ago(like maybe a year ago) and the trash is sitting someone at my house.

Acronis True Image is what I use for the most part now. Over the years I've have had better luck with it then ghost. Have yet to really try with the enterprise versions though. For them I've stuck with ghost.

Try true image if ghost is giving you issues.

Anyone tried the backup that comes with vista? Looks pretty similar to a live ghosting.
