Disable Speedstep?

Ok I KNOW how to do it normally. Done it on several custom builds or laptops already... no big deal.

Normally you can do it either in BIOS or by screensaver, power options, always on, etc..

However, I just got a new Dell Inspiron 530s at work (Win XP).
And its one of those slim PC's, so I think they somehow force the shit on.
Its got an e4600 C2D in it (M0 stepping)
& I think P33 mobo - I'll check tomorrow & post back.


I even tried several 3rd party speedstep control apps below:
RightMark CPU Clock Utility - RM Clock
SpeedswitchXP (which works great on my wife's laptop, set it to static max clock for corded use, and min. clock for battery use, doubles the battery life)
CPUMSR v0.90

None of those above worked!

Anyway, I tried looking in the BIOS & didn't see anything. Anyone have any ideas? I don't think heat will be an issue at its default clock of 2.4Ghz, totally unecesary to drop down to 1.2Ghz when idle!!
 
if it was a faster (fsb) chip, where in speed step it was still running fast I wouldn't mind.

6x multi kicks in while in speedstep

200FSB = only 1.2Ghz
266FSB = 1.6Ghz
333FSB = 2.0Ghz

Not a huge deal, but I know its a little slow to kick in b/c its only going 1.2Ghz... maybe its just in my mind!! But really the chip at full speed is only 2.4Ghz, so I figured why not have it full blast.
 
If you need the speed, it's only going to run at the low speed for around 100ms (tops) before speeding up, and for things that only take 100ms to begin with, you don't even need the speed at all. Stop wasting power.
 
I would just leave it enabled if it is such a pain to disable. Regardless of it's difficulty, I would leave it enabled. What's wrong with being more efficient and saving some power?

The only reason I had to use SpeedswitchXP to disable SpeedStep was when i was using a laptop, SpeedStep would introduce pop and craking sounds in m DAW. Other than that, no reason to disable it that I can think of.
 
I wanted to disable it b/c its a desktop (always on) and even when its underload its only a 2.4Ghz processor. (not like its a 3Ghz quad or something) More so, I think it just pisses me off that I can't turn it off!!! So noone in here is smart enough to figure out what Dell did ? or find me the bit to edit in a hex editor and reflash it with a new bios, that has EIST turned off. Where are the good old days of really hacking a bios?

BTW, I love Speedswitch. I have it set up on my wife's laptop, to stay max power when plugged in & to stay at min. multiplier while on batter. It works faster when plugged in, and on battery power its gone from like 2 hours to almost 4 hours!!
 
Why don't you ask your IT guy to disable it...
It is a work computer afterall isn't? Unless you're working from home and own it, leave it alone.

My company so I do own it and everything else. Also, small company, so I am IT guy. I manage network, website, fileserver, shares, etc..

try using rmclock?

Already tried RightMark Clock. (said that in 1st post)

I'm guessing its being controlled by BIOS and the OS will not change it. :(

There's simply no reason to disable SpeedStep, ever. It's there for a reason, and it can help increase the lifespan of the processor as well as saving you money by actually using less power when it doesn't need to be maxed out. The split second you require the full power of your machine, the CPU will ramp up to full speed, and when you don't it'll clock itself back down automagically.

Messing around with this stuff isn't a benefit to anyone in any way, it's merely tinkering around with the OS and configuration settings that simply have no long term benefits. SpeedStep changes the processor speed based on real-time requirements, so you're pretty much always getting exact what horsepower you need, and if more is needed, wham, it'll go up. Don't need so much, wham, it goes back down.

'Nuff typed.

As do most users who understand how it works.
SpeedStep changes the processor speed based on real-time requirements, so you're pretty much always getting exact what horsepower you need, and if more is needed, wham, it'll go up. Don't need so much, wham, it goes back down.

Read my other posts. I've been able to set it / control it to what speeds I want on other systems. Like on the laptop I have it full speed when plugged in, and stuck to slowest speed when on battery.

I have it on my main gaming rig (e6600) as I keep it at 9x333 = 3Ghz or with speedstep it drops down to 6x333 = 2Ghz.

Anyway, I guess this is just a big waste of time. Noone has had one bit of information about controlling or disabling speedstep on this system.
 
Ok, I have to ask. Dell\Windows XP has a power management utility.

Are you sure the powere scheme is set to "Always On" or something similar??

Sorry if I am pulling a "is it plugged in" comment, I just wanted to be sure that you are not missing something trivial. My IBM PC had both its own and also Windows XP power management, and sometimes I could not tell which one was taking precedence.

Humour me and take a look, and let me know.

There is a reason to if the owner of the system wants to disable it. He doesn't have to give you any reason for it. He didn't ask for you to go into a SpeedStep spiel on how it's going to save the world. You didn't purchase the laptop, you don't pay his power bill, you don't have to worry about his processor's life span. None of that is your business so get your nose out of it.

He asked if anyone knew how to disable it on the laptop he has. If you can't help, then there is no reason for you post a threadcrap.

 
OP has a valid point.

SpeedStep can feel at times sluggish or be problematic depending on the system.

I have had my share of pain with AMD's PowerNow!
I have systems with speed step disabled and systems with it enabled.
On some systems, I use RMClock and manually switch between power saving and maximum power, and on others it is automatic.
Hence, whether to enable/disable speed step should be on a system basis.
 
recap and cliffs b/c we've drifted off topic.

1. got new Dell 530s slim DESKTOP pc at work

2. I wanted to disable speedstep since its only 2.4Ghz CPU, and it drops to 1.2Ghz on idle

3. BUT I can't disable speedstep (via normal screensaver, power management, always on)

4. Also tried RM clock, speedswitch & CPUMSR none work

5. wondered if ANYONE knew what the deal was, why speedstep can't be changed
