Dirt 2 - overhyped

I am getting constant no less than 30fps on 5760x1200 2xAA ultra settings post processing low. I avg 35 with a min of 31 which is totally smooth and consistent with this game. In other words it fucking awesome. The jungle tracks are like racing through crysis.

It was fun playing with you bro. Let's play again tomorrow!

That is pretty damn awesome.. do want!

And I don't want to go into multitasking. Lets just say that having tons of windows spread out and all viewable is great. Firefox, cpuz, task manager, downloads, steam, wmp, furmark, amd oc tools, and afterburner all viewable at a descent size at the same time is something to behold.

I think the game is awesome and is leaps and bounds over MW, you must be still on a old card if you think it sucks.

Hmm well to be fair, I was basing this opine on the demo. I'll register the full version I got and update if anything is better. So far though it doesn't appear to be a HUGE jump from Dirt, but not too bad nonetheless. I want Grid 2 damnit!

When I mentioned Painkiller (2004) and Far Cry (2004) I meant they surprised us in every which way. Graphics were phenomenal, pushed rigs, good games with good gameplay. Something new and fresh at the time.
You were right, I was just being an ass. It's doubtful that DiRT 2 is a huge innovation compared to the first game but I still haven't played it yet so I don't know. Judging by the reviews, and opinion on [H], it's not anything revolutionary, but a good game nonetheless.

I don't think dirt 2 was overhyped as it was pretty damn fun. Dx11 was overhyped for the game as people got the idea that it was going to be some game changing experience which expected dirt 2 to do this. Dirt 2 is the first official DX11 game and was not added to it until later in the development of the game. This tells me that dx11 hasn't been fully utilized, and can not be used as an early judgment about dx11. The added things of dx11 are noticeable as I can tell an improvement and cloth and water movement and a rather big improvement on lighting and shadows. All in all, dirt 2's gameplay is not over hyped as it is just damn plain fun.

After having played it since Friday night, I think Dirt 2 is good...but simplistic. The driving is somewhere between the arcade and the simulator. You can't just drive blindly never letting up on the gas and not braking, but it's certainly not like GT or even NFS: Shift.
The cool thing about Dirt 2 is that it's just plain fun and unbelievably polished. I really like the interface and the way the game is presented.
Normally I'm someone who will play something for 15-20 minutes and then get up and do something else, but I find myself playing this one mindlessly for much longer than I planned. They do a good job of keeping your interest by unlocking new tracks, events, countries, etc. regularly.
It's not mind blowing or anything, but I'd actually say it's a better successor to the older NFS games than the recent sequels in that series. It reminds me a lot of High Stakes, Most Wanted, and the first Underground game.

DX11 aside (seems pretty minor to me) this game is a TON of fun! That said I don't normally like driving games to the extent that I have enjoyed Dirt 2. I like it way better than Forza 3. Rally racing is awesome -- this is the only driving game that has held my attention for an extended period of time. I just finished my first world tour on the game so I think I'm ~1/2 way done.

Not flame bait, just an opinion. They are like assholes....everyone has one....

But personally I am just disappointed. The graphics to me do not appear even much better than Need for Speed Most Wanted circa 2005. The marketing of DX11 is total hype, even the differences shown online are like within 1% between DX9 and DX11. Did anyone else notice the god awful load times as well? I have a Intel x25-m set up perfectly, benching higher than any scores online, everything set up right, and the load times are definitely god awful imo, no matter what. And I'm on a quad core overclocked.

Meh. I'm sick of overhyped games. I like the game that you hear little about, and it comes and blows your fucking ass away. Games like Painkiller, games like Far Cry.

Haven't got the game, personally the old Colin McRae rally sims were a heck of a lot better looking, I'd pick up Richard Burns rally (there you go, two games that got little mention but bloody brilliant reviews) instead of the latest arcade rally offerings.

Waiting to get my Xbox 360 controller for Windows to see how this games plays; using the keyboard is just too clunky. Got this game w/ my 5870.

They have a demo if you would like to try it. I am a huge racing sim fan, but this game blends sim and arcade very well.

I only had 45min last night to play, but I've really enjoyed it so far. I'm not a big fan of the MTV-style presentation in some parts of it, but the racing and variety feels great. I haven't had any of the controller difficulties cited above, and I find the blend between arcade and sim quite nice (I agree with you BravO)))).

I also really like how they implemented some of the look, feel, and gameplay mechanics (like flashbacks, names, rival drivers, and the ability to trade difficulty for more cash race to race) from GRID. That game has to be one of the greatest sleeper hits of the past few years for me...

Sure Dirt 2 isn't as pure as the original Colin Mcrae Rally series (which I adore), and you can certainly argue that there is still a void left for a pure sim rally title to fill, but I don't think it's a bad thing that the series has evolved.

The Xbox 360 controller on a PC works VERY well with this game, I've not even bothered to plug in my Logitech Momo wheel yet because the 360 controller works so well.

Heatlessun....good to hear....I get my controller tomorrow from Amazon.

+1
I downloaded and installed the demo, and I've not felt the need to plug in the Momo, the xbox controller works perfectly for quick steering and sliding.

With Shift, I had to resort to the wheel within 30 min of trying with the controller.

Also, the demo runs perfectly smooth at 1920x1200, 4xAA, 16xAF and all settings on high with a O/Ced GTX260 and my trusty old E6550 + 2GB on XP SP3. Min FPS according to the benchmark was ~37.

It's a fun game, and less 'serious' than Shift, I can just pick up the controller and start playing when I need a quick fix....

Yup, using my 360 controller. Had to setup the controls manually but other than that it's flawless.

My biggest complaint is the robotic navigator during the rally tracks. She gets annoying fast.

Woah! Are those 3x20~ inchers or 3x24?

I have a 20.1" monitor right now and I'm thinking about either getting >24" or getting two more 20.1s

Thoughts?

Finding a 20.1" display @ 1680x1050 seems impossible to me right now. All the new 20" displays seem to be that shitty 1600x900 resolution. :(

Considering I got the game free with the voucher, I didn't bother to look at any documentation for the game. I don't understand the numbers she spouts out. Sure I get the turn notifications, how difficult they are, don't cut, etc. But what does she mean when she says "Medium right, 40, don't cut"?

Don't cut meaning don't go off the path on a turn, usually when there are rocks or trees hugging the road.

edit: 40 = 40 degree turn

16x9's the future. Not sure about that resolution in particular, but 16x9 seems to be eclipsing 16x10 completely.

40 degree turn.

Is it really? I thought it was distance... as in hard right in 40 yards (or meters...)

Sometimes it says "Finish 120" or something along those lines which wouldn't make sense in terms of degrees.

I just find her somewhat useless since I can see everything she's saying in the HUD anyway.

^ Yeah, you're right. Metres or yards it is.

Yeah, I've discovered that while looking for a second 20.1" @ 1680x1050. Oh well, 20" is too small anyways.

I thought I'd be playing Dirt 2 right now - but for me the racing game that's eating into my time is the superb Shift.

The cockpit view is amazing. It's super cool the way everything around you goes blurry when you reach a certain speed - as though you're getting tunnel vision from going too fast. Or the way that your entire vision goes momentarily blurry when you go off course and smash into something - the game also goes into black and white when this happens.

There are so many little details in this game, like the way the cars will kick up dust from the side of the road, or the way that smoke will burn from the tires when the other drivers hit the brakes too hard, or the sight of two cars colliding just ahead.

Turn off most of the driving assists and the game feels fantastic - it's a perfect balance between arcade and simulation.

I love this game.

(I'll probably buy Dirt 2 when it goes on sale, like I did with Shift when I bought it at D2D for 50% off. But knowing what I know now, I would've gladly paid full price for Shift. It would have been worth it.)

I like the rally levels with with the navigator. Sure, your HUD covers what she's saying, too - but with the speed you hit with some of the later cars I'm doing everything I can to stay on the road and it's easier for me to use her cues than to pay attention to both the road and my HUD.

True, but I'm still going to hold onto 1920x1200 as long as possible due to being compatible with 1600x1200 if running an older game. 1920x1080 is as good as 1680x1050 in that regard.

With my HD5850 with everything turned all the way up and of course DX11 :D

THIS GAME is amazing, not hype at all to me, I don't buy into hype, I see it for myself and personally looks amazing

Yeah, I really have no opinion on resolutions other than thinking that 16x10 feels like a more natural point of view. To me 16x9 is a little too wide and it always feels like something above and below my vision is missing. Maybe it's due to watching everything in 4:3 for 95% of my life?
I'm on 1920x1080 just because I'm gaming on my TV. If you're only a big enough TV/Monitor you'll find that no matter your field of vision things look natural.
What's pretty neat is that in some games like Dragon Age you can select a weird resolution in between 720p and 1080p and the TV will upscale it. It can provide the best of both worlds in some cases because it preserves the larger UI and fonts, but still offers a cleaner look.

I've read in some of console reviews that this game is mostly MP oriented racer. Is it true, or someone like me, who aint great fun of multiplayer can play it?

The multiplayer is great, but for the singleplayer people the sp mode is as fun too. I play it mostly to work on my lines, but gatecrashers and domination are great modes and tons of fun to play.

Singleplayer has been great, my only complaint being that there can be too much time spent between races just to get to the next race! I'm never bothered about the new liveries, so a "skip" button would be great. I haven't had a chance to dive into the multiplayer yet, but hopefully will get time this weekend.

Overall Dirt 2 is definitely a 9+ out of 10, and gives me even more confidence that Codemasters will do a good job with F1 2010.

+1 I'm looking forward to F1 2010 as well.

Is there anywhere to purchase this now other than online?
Gamestop doesn't have it yet or BestBuy. Family members can't find it.

I'd get it through Steam but it's supposed to be a Christmas gift and if I download it she knows I'll be playing it.

I love Dirt1 and Grid and after playing the Dirt2 demo it's not over-hyped as far as I'm concerned.
Very much enjoying Shift in the meantime, level 12 in my Lotus Exige S

why not on amazon? I know it's online, but from what you wrote you're lumping "online" with "digital distribution." All those brick and mortar stores have virtual counterparts that can ship you a physical copy.

As an Amazon Associate, HardForum may earn from qualifying purchases.
So I just got this off a member from [H] and this game is effing amazing!!! Lovin' it already even though I don't have DX11. I will join the [H] group for some races =D

You're right, I shouldn't have lumped online with digital.
Placing my order with Amazon.
Thanks;)

Actually, the golden ratio is ~1.618

Thus, the perception that 16:10 is better than 16:9 and feels more natural may have some basis.
