The nice ppl at gamers hell have a video made by kryteg demostrating farcry running direct x 10
http://www.gamershell.com/news/24901.html

Will this meant that new video cards aka 7800gtx and new atix1080xt will be compatible but wont support all features? unless cough "ati does have it"

remember how the nvidia FX line was one of first cards to support dx9 and how in some games there was a visual improvement aka HL2 running dx7-8-9
Thechnically would it be better to get now a slightly older card with new features and hold out on the Uber card until DX10 n Shader 4 comes out?

I understand that is a very early demo, but dx 10 doesn't look to be all its cracked up to be so far. I mean, that looks like a direct x 9 game. I'm sure those same graphics could be easily achieved with dx 9 and a 512mb graphics card. really, the great thing about that video is that all the normal maps and textures appear to be of really high resolution, something that would call for more vram, not a whole new api.

Yeah but theres stuff that limits the card according to its shader. Example In HL2 difference between shader 8 and 9 is that 9 can look deeper in water, does support light going in and at same time reflecting back. Better shadows from reflection

At the PDC Microsoft Conference, CryTek, developers of Far Cry, released a movie which shows some of the capabilities of the Cry Engine under DirectX 10 API: dynamic day/night cycle, fully interactive enviroments, sunrays and diffuse transmission, real time soft shadows, soft particles, interactive/destructrible enviroments, volumetric clouds, advanced shader technology.

There really isn't anything there that can't be done with DX9/SM 3.0, just that CryTek is choosing to use DX10 for it, which is cool, maybe it provides more performance for them.

It isn't surprising either that they are pushing to support DX10, they did very well pushing DX9 in FarCry with the CryEngine. It makes sense that their next engine will support DX10.

Can't wait to see a game based on it.

There is a difference between supporting DX10 and having all the features contained in DX10. The G70 doesn't have the features of DX10, like SM 4.0, but it does support it and is compatible with it. So you can run DX10 games on the G70, you just won't be able to utilize an effect if it uses a feature not contained in the G70. Just like how cards work today. If you have a DX8 card you can run a DX9 game, you just can't run those features your card doesn't support. Most games have different paths for different levels of cards.

It's all about how the game developer programs the game and what features and shaders they run and support.

None of this can be done with a DX9 graphics card? I really want destructable landscapes. I've been waiting a long time for that. And how are they playing the game with DX10 if there is no DX10 graphics card ATM?

It might just be running on a customized version of Far Cry DX9.

The destructable enviroments is problably more dependent on CPU and that PHYS-X card. It problably is Crytek's way of showing they are going to support the physics processor. Cause that structure broke up into a shitload of pieces without coming to a complete system halt.

They are probably using dx10 because next year when microsoft does release directx10, directx9 games will be run in software mode.

DX10 isn't even finalized yet though, specs are not even confirmed yet on it, the API isn't complete.

I've heard about that, emulating DX9, I'll need to get more info about it all once the spec is finalized.

the only thing that really impressed me was the leaf moving in very real manor to the shape of the body, that was neato : )

The Cry engine is one of the most amazing engines I've ever seen...and that from a small developer! Good job Crytek! ;)

I wonder what video card was used to run demo. I mean immagine dx10 ver of farcry and u have a 7800gtx or ati x1800xt then u find out that ur card wont support feature of the leaf moving and destructible embironment.
I am in market for new cart got a geforce 4 ti4200 wanted to make a full jump to pci express and a new 7800gtx ot ati x1800xt but seeing new DX maybe i should get a 6800gt o/c and pair it with my pentium 4 2.8 800bus HT, and my sony fw900 trinitron (24in crt). I wanted a more powerfull rig so i can run this bad boy at a higher resolution. At this moment all games a 1024x.

I like the interactive plant life, the dynamic soft shadows and the volumetric clouds the most.
Freakin' awesome.

i think you will find that the leafs moving and destructible enviro's has absolutely nothing to do with directX10 aside from the way they are rendered. the way they move and get destroyed is all done through the cpu or physx chip.

incorrect, Microsoft is making great strides to put in full support for physics designs in DX10, which i have yet to see linked to what ageia is doing. They actually have a whole department working on it seperatly (i'd find the link but im too lazy). Point is, thats actually going to be something they want to widely employ in games. Another main thing is that DX10 is being made to greatly reduce overhead so that we get more power out of our hardware, at least thats the plan. On Vista its very advanced, when you start to play a game every program non-critical including most of windows will shut itself down, hybernate if you will. While this is seperate from DX, it is linked to it within WGF.

edit- okay not as lazy as i said, semi-dated job add:

The Windows Graphics and Gaming Technology group is looking for a software design engineer to join a growing team responsible for developing Direct Physics. This team is responsible for delivering a great leap forwards in the way game developers think about integrating Physics into their engines. Physics and real time, accurate simulation is a key part of the next generation gaming experience, bringing increased realism, greater immersion and more interesting experiences.
You will be a member of the core engine team who will be primarily responsible for working closely with our Direct3D team, helping to define, develop and map optimized simulation and collision algorithms onto data structures that are optimized for the GPU. Extensive experience with graphics shading languages such as HLSL is expected as well as a good understanding of modern graphics hardware and associated algorithms.
You should have excellent C/C++ skills with at least 4 years of development experience. You should have a good understanding of 3D Math as well as current CPU and GPU architecture. Knowledge of DirectX and shipping game applications is strongly recommended. An understanding of Havok, Ageia, MathEngine, Meqon or ODE would be ideal. A BA/BS degree in Computer Science, Math, Physics or equivalent experience is required.

Yes defnately. Mindblowing engine, and a beautiful game.

I can blow big holes in walls in the F.E.A.R. demo w/ physics on max.

with current gaming engines in DX9 developers pretty much use their own physics engine or others like Havok etc...

with DX10 it has it's own physics API, i believe that's the idea

direct x may have something to do with physics but that doesnt mean it will be doing the physics operations on the video card. i dont think it would be smart to put that strain on the video card, especially when we have PPU's coming out soon

looks very nice. i think the r520 might be dx10 who knows, if it is it will leave nvidia in a dust for sure

so do we know if directx 10 is going to be a vista thing or will windows xp users be able to use it?

wow...that was cool as fuck. Notably the shadows and the "interactive" leaves on that bush.

Were thoes IGGs?

darn ...what about OpenGL now ...? :)

What about it? OpenGL went bye-bye once DX9 was released and DX8 & 9 -based games were coming out.

DX10 just pushed OpenGL even further out the door.

I think it's for the best. Now they can focus on just DirectX.

Seems like with Nvidia's 7800 series, they've been doing well in DX based games.

I'm sure enough to say that the whole "Nvidia = OpenGL / ATI = DirectX" is pretty much over with.

If this is true, i take back everything negative i said about the PPU. With full support from the OS (especially DX10 support) it'll be automatically within reach by every game :) It's like skipping the dark ages of 3D gaming when games were custom coded for the 3D hardware and go straight to the Glide and DX era. :)

Don't be too presumptious (spellcheck pls) ;) Linux has government support, remember how they're switching to opensource to cut down on costs? And MS sending representatives to give out special deals to get them back? :D

The video was pretty good, im curious to see what they are going to come out with in DX10.

That's mostly an issue of precision and limited instructions.
SM2.0 and 3.0 already have 32-bit float precision and a big instructionset and reasonably high instruction limits.
You can already do 'anything' with SM3.0, some stuff may just become a bit more efficient with a newer version.

No they won't. Where did you get that from?
What I heard is that DX10 will bring on a new driver model, and DX9 will be run on that driver model. But it's still hardware, and it's nothing new, really, since we've had a few new driver models in DX over the years, and have always had backward compatibility.
MS is not going to break all existing DX software ofcourse.
