Difference in Socket 745 boards...

Friend of mine gave me a AMD 64 Mobile 3200+, so I was searching around newegg for a new mobo. Cant decide between the DFI LanParty ($100) or the Gigabyte GA-K8NS ($58). Both have the nforce 3 chipset, and the same FSB. Im sure that has to be some difference performance wise besides the fact that Lanpartys are very OC'able. Also, I hear that DFI boards can be picky with ram, and since I have two 512 chips by different brands (same cas latency) that also might be a concer. Any thoughts\suggestions?

id go with the DFi, its a solid performer with great features and it should run fine with two different sticks although they might cripple your overclocks

I've always heard the DFI LP UT nF3 250gb is the best.

I'm thinking about the nF4X though because I want to go PCI-X without buying a new Processor yet.

The benefit of the DFI is the amount of tweaking options you have from voltage to timings with different aspects of your computer. The point of having a mobile chip in a desktop board is usually to overclock, so it seems to be best to look into the DFI. The Gigabyte is probably just a no nonsense board with minimal overclocking features. I'd think that the DFI is also better because it is far more likely to have a bios that supports the mobile s754 chips rather than the Gigabyte.

Get the NF4X from DFI. It supports PCI-E and I'm fairly sure I've heard someone say it was almost $20 cheaper than the UT250GB.

I agree as long as you don't mind getting a PCIe vid card too ;). PCIe is where it's at :D.

i know for sure that the dfi nf3-250 board supports mobiles chips but im not sure if the dfi nf4x does

N H O,
don't know offhand of any mobo manufacturer that officially supports mobile cpus.

I think NF4 route is a good way to go, was thinking about it myself a month or so ago till my 754 msi rig died.

Sect. Eight,
As well as the DFI which looks good -
u might consider:-
K8N4-E Deluxe probably not as open a bios as the dfi but ocs well & more features than u can shake a stick at. (the spec favours a top range sli card)

Other advantage of nf4 is that you avoid the unlocked sata 1/2 issue that effects the neo3 250/ultra chipset. you have unfettered access to all sata ports when ocing.

luck

Ive used the dfi nf3 250gb and the asus k8n-e deluxe nf3 250gb(current rig) i wound up rma'ing the dfi due to now i know misinformation from dfi about a memory controller that doesnt exist. both are very good boards. ive been running my asus for a few months now with an a64 3000+ newcastle @2.2 and im very happy with it. this was also my first amd build after using intel and i cant go back

DFI for the win. DFI supports mobiles, its one of a few boards, like the chaintech vnf3-250, which is very ocable and can be bought for a mear 60 bucks. the chaintech can be a quirky board though, and the DFI is tried and true. personally id go for the DFI.

I've got both the NF4X and the Abit NV8. Both support DTRs and mobiles (tested with a DTR 3200+ and Mobile Sempron 3100) but the NV8 has problems with my Turion and Winbond and Micron RAM, whereas the DFI has problems with Micron and Infineon. Don't ask me why.

the asus k8n4e dlx supports dtr and mobile chips.read the user reviews at newegg on this board.mine is a great board and will keep me happy till m2 is affordable.it o/clocks very well, but probubly not dfi o/clocks,that is a great board also but is ram picky and agp.pcie video is nice.its a shame dfi dosent have a lan party 754 pcie board.id buy that in a heartbeat.but honestly ck out the asus, for 89$ its a good deal and ck out all of the xtras it has.a rock solid board.

Be advised that we do not officially support mobile cpu's on desktop boards, and are providing this beta bios for feedback and for those of you that wish to use one. If the bios does not work please keep in mind we will try to make it work, but since we will never officially support mobile cpu's on desktop boards, it is not high priority.

luck
