I remember trying this game when it came out (at a friend's place) and although the story looked interesting, the FPS aspect didn't work for me. I thought the engine was meh...

A year or so later, I got friends who still tell me that I should really play this game.

I think I saw the GOTY edition on sale somewhere for like 10 bucks and am wondering if I should bite.

What did you guys think of the game?

BTW, I like some stealth, but not all stealth or just stealth.
I like to shoot, fight and throw grenades too :D

Thanks!

Yeah, it's an awesome game - go for it! Deus Ex has always been great about letting you build your character to your own play-style and then giving you multiple ways to solve each task. So if you don't like stealth, build a run-&-gun character. It's completely up to you.

I would say that DX:HR was the best game I had played in a long time. It's similar in some respects to MGS, although MGS admittedly is more complex and in-depth in terms of moves one can accomplish (like holding people up, or hanging off of ledges, etc etc).

Still, DX:HR has some of the best gameplay I've ever experienced in a game. It has lots of text reading for RPG nerds (which I realize turns some people off), and the story is okay. The game is mostly linear (although it does have a few quest hub sections). So really it's about the ride and it's not about consequence per se.
However I felt that this game deserved more than one play-through just because of the gameplay. Zero kills is fully possible, as is killing everyone. With the upgrade system customization, taking your character in very different directions is quite possible (although I would argue that getting certain upgrades is significantly better/more important than others).

So if you like tactical, stealth, RPG's, with some FPS action intermixed, you'll probably like this game. If stealth bothers you, you can try to run and gun it, but it will be less enjoyable (this isn't the sort of game that you can take 100 bullets and be fine.. to reiterate though, stealth kills is viable). I would say that DX:HR represents top tier in the genre. Although no one knows me, my recommendation comes high. I don't waste time on BS games, I would sooner quit half-way then complete something not worth while. I don't have time to play every game anymore. Just the best.

Go for it! It's a great and very fun game. I am a bit biased because I experience some nostalgia when I think about the original Deus Ex (one of my favorite games of all time), but nevertheless HR is a very fun game. It should be even better now with the more polished version available. As others have pointed out, what makes Deus Ex:HR fun is that there are many ways to go about beating the game. You could go all stealth, or you could run & gun -- the choice is yours.

This. It has an excellent story and gameplay mechanics, which are rather rare IMO. It takes a while to finish (took me 35 hours) and your upgrades actually allow for different gameplay options, unlike Mass Effect.

It's a great game, but it starts a bit slow. Plus, I'd say that it actually gets easier as you go. The first mission is the toughest one you'll face for a while since you're still getting used to the mechanics while you play it. Things get much better and more involved afterward, so stick with it.
The concept of being able to play the game as a ninja or Rambo is 100% legit and feasible without having to wait around for hours or have reflexes of steel.
IMO, the only real issue with the game relates to the weird stutter in the Director's Cut edition. The normal game fixed that with patches, but the DC version is actually based on an earlier release and still has it. If you can overlook that issue in a few open areas, the game is terrific.

It's an excellent game! You definitely need it, even if it was back to full price. You can choose how you upgrade everything, so you can also make mixtures for your character. I like to try to do everything stealthily, but instead of doing it over if I'm seen, I still like to have enough combat skills to take out half the building if I need to. That's a play style that fits right in with this game. You can change it all up as you go along.

Game is great

selling points include
- punch anyone and everything just because you're "Adam 'Adam Jenson' Jenson"
- throw refrigerators like they were mere cardboard boxes
- jump so high that you take near lethal fall damage if you add an extra few inches to that fall distance
- eat snickers bars to grow more powerful than you could ever imagine
- wonder how the fuck one of the supposed greatest top secret military weapons ever devised is actually just a bunch of explosives that sit in your chest cavity

be more than human

Its definitely an excellent game, but be sure you get the Director's Cut! MAJOR improvements there in terms of mechanics and gameplay, especially boss fights and such.

Not that the GOTY Edition is not the Director's Cut (at least, in Steam), so be wary. The GOTY edition released long before Director's Cut, and the newer Director's Cut not only includes many tweaks and upgrades, but natively comes with the DLC packs that the original release had for separate purchase or bundled as a GOTY edition. This can be a bit confusing as GOTY is often the newest and "best" game variant, but not in this case.

Directors cut. Do it. Don't get the normal version, the directors cut improves the game SO MUCH, though it does make the AI WAAAAY more alert. Seriously, you fart out of place and the whole building swarms on you.

But that said, one of the mid-game missions felt so incredibly like a first-person Metal-Gear-Solid game. Try playing the game with zero kills and stealthy: you'll have a new favourite game.

I bought DE:HR over 2 years ago and didn't get around to playing it until this past weekend. I waited wwwwaaaaaaayyyyyy too long. It's a great game. Enjoy!

I loved the original Deus Ex: Human Revolution, I've been wanting to try out the Director's Cut but I have read that it introduces a whole lot of problems, even going as far as breaking what was fixed on the vanilla version of the game.

These people are lying! HR sucked, it was terrible. Don't believe them.

OK, it was a great game. Just kidding.

I had this game for almost two years before I got around to playing it. I played it for about an hour or two and was hooked for the next few days. I ended really liking this game alot.

Terrible mouse lag, very "floaty" feel to the game, serious stutter issues for no reason. Unless they fixed all that (I played when the Directors Cut came out), I will not touch this game again and honestly do not recommend anyone else does either if you are at all sensitive to mouse issues.

IIRC there were ways to alleviate that, but yeah I do remember mouse issues being a problem in the vanilla game.

I couldn't get into it myself. I never reached a point where the gameplay felt satisfying or where the world started feeling Deus Ex-y.

I need to plan on planning to think about considering trying it again with a controller this time, but I'm still not sure.

Interesting. I don't know if I'm the "most sensitive", but I didn't have this particular problem. Just to express that I know what you're talking about, I did experience floaty mouse in Bioshock. Especially since that was a console port, and they clearly didn't bother to get all that figured out. In that particular game, I just pushed myself to get used to it.

Well, I'm not sure what the "X-Factor" is for you in terms of "Deus Ex-y". It's definitely cyberpunk, which is of course a hallmark of the series. Interesting things in terms of gameplay and story etc actually happen early on. The entire portion of Detroit (the first time you're there) is all about expanding the world, getting you used to playing, and used to the upgrades, and just allows you to explore and enjoy the world.

Not sure how much you played in, I really didn't feel like I had to force myself to play the game. With the exception of the "intro" segment. After the intro segment, I was hooked. If you want to know why, it was mostly because I could see it was going to be linear and full of basic walkthrough guides, and everything is locked down. But after the cinematic/credits at the beginning, I knew I had to be all about this game, and it was engrossing.

I personally am not into using controllers, but I could see how it could be good for this game.

I loved it. To me, it felt like a combination of the original Deus Ex and Mass Effect, and I enjoyed that combination very much.

I finished original DeusEx and HR just feels boring in comparison. Never finished it.

To each their own! I say if you gave it a good ol' try then you have every right to not like it.

Thanks everyone! I will look into the mouse issues some have mentioned and if it's manageable, I will make sure to get the DC.

Thanks!

Hopefully they fixed it, because jsut from the few opening levels I played (~3 hours or so), the game seems REALLY good. I just couldn't get past the mouse issues, kind of how Dead Space was unplayable until that fix was discovered.

I forget, is there a way to bang the helicopter pilot?

I don't remember there being a way to bang anyone in DE:HR (clearly need to re-play this game, lol) but I did manage to keep her alive through the crash last time I played, which I didn't think was possible before, and there was a nice warm-fuzzy moment toward the end where she said thanks for saving her life.

I got DE:HR for free about six months ago with a video card purchase. I uninstalled it only midway throught the second level. I thought the game was meh although it was the vanilla version.

I did the same... I agree...

Maybe there's a Hot-Cyber-Coffee mod for it or something. :D

I'm pretty sure she doesn't swing that way... Unless there was a way to make Jensen a female...

I quit playing when the DLC kicked in and took all my augs away.
Then Dark Souls 2 came out....

This was my personal GOTY when it came out. Phenominal, memorable game.

Yeah, they got just about everything right. Some of the character animations were somewhat baffling, but the overall atmosphere was perfect for this sort of setting. They got all of the cyberpunk elements just right for a game that was supposed to be in a transitional time period for all of this emerging tech. Etc. Etc.

I played the original version, but then bought the DC on Steam. I've heard they got rid of the golden shine on things. Too bad, I kinda liked that. It's about time to give the DC a try I guess.

I base my ideal mouse movement off quake 3 arena. Perfectly smooth and agile. DX:HR, especially the DC didn't have the best mouse movement. Quite floaty. I had to mess with settings a bit to get it tolerable, and after awhile it's something I just got used to.

Make sure V-Sync is off

if you can get used to it, the game is amazing.

Wait are you saying that, while fully integrated into the Directors Cut, that they don't carry over your inventory and augs?

Yeah, so, remember when I was saying how annoying it was to fight Fedorova and not have the proper augs to kill her with the turrets, even though I was pumping augs into stealth and whatnot?
Yeah, I got past that stupid fight, got more augs, shit felt good man... then the DLC started....EVERYTHING, they took EVERYTHING. WTF

I think I actually said "fuck you" out loud at the game... I don't know when I'll go back now... still pisses me off.

*minor spoilers ahead, don't read this if you're super worried about spoilers*

What Leviathan is talking about is "The Missing Link" DLC. Originally the Missing Link DLC was playable as a fully standalone mission, that was supposed to take place inbetween rescuing Tong while flying from Hengsha to Singapore. Because the DLC was developed separately, it reset the augs as it was essentially a mini game that was launched completely independently of the main story. The directors cut then actually has the DLC integrated into the game (at the appropriate story point). I haven't played the directors cut, as I played it all separately, but I would imagine after completing the Missing Link you would get back all your augs that you had previous to it.

Honestly, I wouldn't look at it as a big deal, or as something to rage quit over. If it seriously bugs you that much, you could'a just cheated via console and given yourself as many praxis points as you wanted to steam roll the DLC.... although that would've been imbalanced as of course the DLC is designed for you to have no augs to start with.
