I've been using headphones for the last 15 years, but lately they have give me a lot of fatigue after more than an hour. Guess I'm just getting old... Looking for a 2.0 speaker solution. Sub not an option as my office is upstairs and would drive the wife nuts. So I need a 2.0 setup. I've been researching and I am leaning towards these, but open to other options


The other issue is space. I have a 3x30" setup, so wondering where to position the speakers... Looking for suggestions / options.

You'll need to wall mount tilting down aiming at your ear level.

The Swans are good, you'll just need to get creative with mounting.

Still pondering mounting ideas that don't involve putting holes in the walls.

Is the desk flush in the corner of the room or is there space? How much space to the left side of the desk?(bottom left corner of the picture) Behind the monitors on the corners of the desk? How high is desk from the floor and the desk to the top of the monitors?

I've heard those Energy RC10 speakers before. Recall being impressed with them. I have room for the amp... biggest issue is place ment of the speakers.. I can make about 12" clearance behind the monitors on the left/right sides of the desk... really want to avoid a wall mount if I can.

Yeah get a piece of marble tile from home depot which is about 12x10 or so to make up the space b/w your wall and desk. Then simply find a stand of some sort that is tall enough to put the speaker over your monitor. I would just make a stand out of wood myself. Or use cinderblocks lol. Not in your room though. Too nice. There has to be a 18 to 24 inch speaker stand that will fit back there though.

I suppose I may as well wall mount them then. Would placing them behind the monitors be that bad?
 
I'm no audiophile but ST>Emotiva>RC-10s should be pretty clean.

I found these but they aren't cheap. http://www.wayfair.com/VTI-BLE-Adju...ker-Stands-in-Grey-Silver-BLE101S-VI1137.html Assuming they come shipped with the posts disconnect from the base you could slip the bases behind the desk and then screw the posts in.

Alternatively if you can figure out how to get 18-20" stands to sit on the desk behind the two end monitors I think it would work.

The next step would be figuring out how to angle them at your ears.

The monitors would block most of the sound if they are directly in front of the speakers.


Edit: You know, you could just have 1 speaker sitting up against the end of the monitor near the window and then place another on a stand off the desk on the opposite end of the monitors. It might be a little wide spacing wise but it'd be a heck of a lot easier and cheaper to setup and probably wouldn't sound that bad.

Or move the desk so that you could use speaker stands on the outside left and right.
 
Spaceman, I thought of that, but speakers would be too far apart for the listening distance. The amp SithSolo1 suggested is perfect. Definitely going with a passive speaker setup.

Top of monitors are 22" from desk, so 24" stand would be perfect, but not too crazy about having a 10+ pound speaker sitting on a stand over my displays. Need to find a way to make them secure.
 
Ok roll with me on this:

Buy two of these: http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay...gId=10051&cmRelshp=req&rel=nofollow&cId=PDIO1 from Lowes and bend them into an L shape with the long arm at the desired mounting height. Stick the short end under the back edge of the two end monitor stands. Attach adjustable speaker wall mount kits to the top and mount the speakers.

Disclaimer: I am not a huge DIYer. I've never tried this but it works in my head. :D Being steel I don't think the weight of the mounted speaker will bend the metal and I think the weight of the 30" monitors will keep them from falling over. You could also also place actual weights on the "foot" end instead of having them under the stands. You could even attach upside down T plates, http://www.lowes.com/pd_315657-1277-DPB116_0__?productId=3168391&Ntt=brace , to the back of the L for addtional lateral support. It may not be pretty but its cheap and I think it will work fine.

I'll chime in and give a + however many for the Energy RC10s. I've had them for a couple years now and I have no complaints at all. When paired with a good amp they are incredible for the size and price. Also, since you aren't going with a sub, these will put out PLENTY of bass with the right amount of power. If you're not into insane tekno amounts of bass you will be perfectly happy with those. If I didn't love crazy deep bass as much as I do I definitely wouldn't need a sub.
 
I'd be scared of supporting the speaker weight with the displays... What if there's a small quake or someone stupidly decides to lift/move the display? (yes, I live near a fault line and with stupid people) If you do decide todrill holes in the wall you might as well wall mount those babies, the displays that is.

3x30" mounts aren't cheap but it'd bring them closer to eye level and allow you to easily rotate them into portrait mode. That'd leave enough room to place the speakers below them, sitting horizontally (tweeters out, angled up). There's also floor/desk-clamp mounts for displays.

Speaking of which, you could possibly re-purpose some desk clamping display mounts for speaker use, they make some with vertical arms that would work well I think. You could also run with Sith's idea but use a longer arm and stick the short/base end under the desk provided the legs or back side have the surface area for it. That might be more stable, if it wasn't for that desk's back curve it'd probably be the best bet IMO.

I had a similar issue even tho I only have 3x24" displays and smaller 3" woofer active speakers... I was actually on the verge of just getting a new desk but eventually settled for putting all three displays on the top shelf of my old desk (which I wanted to remove, it has two small back shelves, each one about 5" apart) and then the speakers actually sit vertically right on the desk below (just enough clearance), angled up with isolation pads. They're closer to me than I'd like but it works for now.
 
Thanks for all the feedback. I've narrowed the speakers down to the Dana 640i

I'm still liking the Emotiva a100 Amp . And the Dana 640i are efficeint monitors, so I'm thinking this will be a good match.

Also decided to placed the speakers behind me. Desk is a U-shape. Sound stage will be backwards while I work, but thats ok for now.
 
The nanosats are great satellites but they wouldn't work in this situation. The 640i's are impressive.
 
The 640s are better speakers no doubt. I just recall the omni tweets having an absurd sweet spot on them which would perhaps allow for some alternative placement.

Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

I used to own their larger brothers (the BM6A MkII) but found them a little bit large for my desk space.

The MC15's however are a perfect fit in both size and scale of sound for desktop PC use.
