No, you know how most monitors have a USB hub built in, so you can just connect all your stuff to the monitor and have one cable go to the PC?

The U3415W has that, but it has two upstream ports for connections back to a PC, instead of one like most. You only need one per system. There's a setting in the monitor OSD to specify which inputs have USB assigned. So the setup would look like this:

dp cable to mDP input & USB cable 1 - ubuntu system
dp cable to DP input & USB cable 2 - Mac system
keyboard and mouse combo USB wireless thing (it looks like it has one of those USB wireless dongle things) connected to USB port on monitor

setting in monitor menu "USB selection":
    USB 1 - mDP
    USB 2 - DP

What this means is that USB upstream port 1 will be active when you are on the mDP input, and upstream port 2 will be active when you are on the regular DP input.

So when you change inputs to switch between your Mac and your Ubuntu system, you don't need to move the wireless dongle for your keyboard/mouse combo (or any other USB devices you have connected to the monitor, like a headset, webcam, whatever) - the monitor will change the active USB upstream port to match automatically, and your keyboard/mouse/etc will all be connected to whichever system you have up on the display.

(there's pictures of the OSD here so you can see the menu I mean: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/dell-u3415w-34-inch-ultra-wide-curved-monitor,4186-3.html)

Had mine for a couple of weeks now. Had returned the 2715 and the asus pq279, both were not good enough (dead pixels and backlight bleeding) but this one seemed ok. It has quite beautiful colours and image quality but in the top corners, both left and right, there is glow and it's quite bad. But I had been through so much hassle returning screens that I kept it. Now weeks on, I am playing a game for example and there is a loading screen that is not 21:9 and it's in the middle and I am just looking at those corners, it's hard to explain but it really bugs you. The fact you have to put up with this in 2016 with a monitor of 700 euros. It's sad really.

To be honest with you I've never used the USB hubs on monitors, so not familiar with how they work - so please bear with me.

So in addition to the DP cables from the monitor to the computers, I also need to run 2 USB cables from the monitor to each system, but plug the keyboard dongle into the monitor itself?

Exactly. This monitor effectively works as a USB KVM. You have one downstream cable to each system, you assign each to an input in the monitor's UI, and when you switch to that associated input the system you picked sees the USB devices (keyboard, mouse, etc) you connected to the built-in hub. When you switch back they go to the other one. Big time saver, depending how you use it.

Ahh ok I got it, thank you for the explanation! I definitely plan on setting it up this way when I go to add an Apple Mac Mini to my setup.

I'd like to also have Windows 7 still as part of the main system as a dual boot with Ubuntu, but they're pushing for a windows 10 upgrade and I want nothing to do with it whatsoever.

Have you used Windows 10? I switched on my desktop a few weeks ago (using it now) and honestly I'd say it's an improvement over 7; boots much faster, a cleaner UI, no real issues so far. To my eyes it's all the best parts of 7 and 8, combined. I never cared for the start screen nonsense in 8, and we're back to a proper desktop... so I'm good. Granted, I'm not paranoid about data collection like some people.

I'm one of those paranoid people that will never go to Windows 10 because of their deep data collection (I supposed they're at least being up front about it now)

But I've moved back to Ubuntu, hopefully to stay now.

So I've currently got 3x Asus 24" 1080P VE-248H monitors and just bought the Dell U3415W.

I play Fallout 4, Left 4 Dead 2, Payday 2, Dying Light. Maybe some others. I've noticed that not all games play nice with triple monitor, which made me think of maybe switching to ultrawide. That and not having bezels in the screen. I also will be doing photoshop and maybe some video editing from my DJI Phantom 3 Pro. But I do have a Dell 24" 4k monitor for that as well.

Currently my configuration is as such.
    Intel E5-2695v3, 32GB, GTX 980 Ti, Samsung 950 Pro 512GB, 1TB EVO 850, X99 Sli Plus.

I'm curious how this monitor will be compared to my current setup.

Got mine a few days ago. Went from a dual 24" monitor set up. I love the aspect ratio and the monitor itself is amazing. Haven't seen any BLB or IPS glow yet and it seems to be perfectly happy running at 75hz.

Everything I've read suggests it'll take the signal but drop frames. I'd test for it.

Christ I am so fed up of monitor problems. What can we do about the buzzing noise? Seems to be coming from behind the dell logo and also seems to be worse on white screens. This is really starting to annoy me now, have spent the last couple of years returning monitors. I have had this one for more than a month and it comes delivered from another country to the one I live in.

I dig my Dell U3415W too. It's got some backlight bleed in corners, but I've never really been super sensitive to that anyhow. I only notice it during bootup. The only problem I have is that it's now secondary to a Samsung UN40JU7500 TV, so it doesn't get the primary attention it once had.

I haven't heard any buzzing noise from mine, commodore, and I'm usually able to pick out the electronics hum from TVs and such.

Is it plugged in to a power strip with a bunch of other stuff? Older strip or cheaper one maybe?

I had some stuff on a cheapie power strip from Target for a while and got hum occasionally. Replaced it with a $25 APC brand one and it went away. That was on a TV though, dunno if it would apply here.

Not sure how to call it, blots? It's in the center of screen after it has been stand by and dissapears after 5 min or so using display. Should I be worried?

Ok, I've permanently gone with the Dell. I love the amount of desktop space, but its physical space usage is so much less than 3x 24" monitors.

Too many pages to dig through this late at night and not sure if I will have a chance before the one I'm looking at is over. What is your input in this monitor for gaming? Been looking at this or the XR341CK. Frankly I don't think I would notice the 15HZ difference. I was really holding off for the Monoprice but a few days ago they stated on their facebook page it was in development and I'm getting tired of my mistaken 29UM65 purchase and the lost vertical realestate. That and font is too small because of the 1080p and enlarging it doesn't look right with the screen format so I want to move on.

This monitor is almost exclusively 60Hz. Very few people get it to 75Hz without frame skipping.

I'd go with the Dell over the Acer. I've had the Dell and it was a really nice monitor. The Acer, meh, FreeSync but QC issues. The only thing you'll have to worry about on the Dell is BLB, but you may get lucky. The warranty is superior and I'm told that they can be had for as little as $500-$550 on Slickdeals.

Yea those are refurbs with 90 day. The cheapest a new one has been is $650. I just wish Monoprice would have held up to the CES date of Q1. Then on Twitter they say April/May. Then a few days ago they say it's in developement on Facebook. Which at this time in the game if it was to be released in May at the latest it wouldn't still be in development. It would be getting mass produced and boxed. Oh well though lol. I really like how theirs was to have more curve and be 75hz with any gpu. Although I would have picked up a 3 year square trade warranty to have extra coverage over the 1 year they give.

I still use a 29" Dell UW myself at 2560X1080.

I still love mine in general, it's a few years old now.

Monitors are the only thing I even consider buying from Dell these days.

That's a pretty sweet looking screen to me.

Despite my hankerings for high refresh and -sync I've got this on my short list. Hard to argue with what it offers at current asking prices.

This has been out since late '14 so I'm wondering what Dell may have up their sleeves for this year.

Snagged one with full 3 year Dell warranty ending Apr 2019 for $582.30 after ebay bucks and ebates cash back. Actual was $640 shipped. So cheaper then it's ever been direct from dell according to a SD search.

Should be delivered Thursday and I'm stoked!

Has anyone successfully overclocked this monitor? Is this done via software and can Dell tell if it's been done if you have to warranty the monitor? Any settings recommendations using for a game pc only.

Has anyone opened up their 3415 and tried to fix backlight bleeding with tape or any other method?

I just got one of these monitors and I love it! I just have a question and wondered if anyone knows how to fix it. The monitor likes to DIM itself on different lightings. I can't figure out how to turn that off as it seems to be a big buggy. It dims on stuff and I can't see the screen well then. Any ideas why it does this?

I'm not sure it's form display itself, never heard about it before. I suppose you are using a laptop and it has auto-brightness enabled?

No, it's on my gaming desktop being pushed with a 1080 GTX video card.

It seems like in Black Ops 3, when it goes into the between sessions of the game, it dims down and then brightens back up or when it loads the game, it dims down. It's weird annd I haven't ever seen it before on any monitor. If I am just using Windows I never see it happen unless the room gets real dark.
