I'm onsite currently initializing a new RAID 5 array on a customers server, a T310. The server originally came with 3x500GB SATA drives that are hot swap. I have replaced those with 3x500GB SAS drives of my own that are not under warranty. I am planning on doing a bare metal restore of SBS 2011. If the restore works, would I be able to pull one drive at a time and replace it with the original 500GB SATA drive? I know Dell says they wouldn't recommend it and it wouldn't be supported, but has anyone done it? Should it work or will I get blue screens?

The original drives are Dell 500GB SATA 7200RPM hot swap
The drives in the server now are Dell 500GB SAS 7200RPM hot swap.

Same size drives, same speed, only difference is SAS>SATA.

Frankly I'd keep SAS over sata. The sata drives likely aren't under warranty either.
 
The SATA drives came with the server and the server warranty was extended through to September so they are covered.
 
I thought I read someplace that you couldn't mix and match Sas/Sata on the perc series.

I was in the same boat with a customer that had a failed drive on there Sas6iR

2x250gb sata and I wanted to replace with 2x300gb 15k SAS

(ended up backing up the drives and then restoring to a newly created raid1)

* I did use another raid card so that I didn't touch the orig setup at all
 
If you are doing a bare metal restore, then why not rebuild the raid with the sata drives first? The individual drives are invisible to the OS behind the perc.

Also make sure your extended warranty covers the sata, on the small biz stuff, they made sata coverage an additional cost item a couple years ago.

And like mentioned above, I would not mix sas & sata (which is probably not even possible).
 
Its ok the restore to the SAS drives worked, it only took about 2.25 hours, I am doing the restore now to the original SATA drives, should take just as long. Thanks for the heads up about the warranty, I am aware that Dell dropped hard drive coverage on their most basic warranty which is why I always get pro support or better warranties as they cover hard drives. The RAID config is on the drives, not the controller.
