As for the memory, everything I've read says that going from 512 to 1 GB didn't make any difference.

OT - yep, that was the auction. I got outbid by everyone by a couple bucks at the last minute.

If you decide to get rid of one of the cards to recoup some of the cost, let me know :D
 
I will be using 3xWD 640GBs in RAID 5

Has anyone run into any conflicts with the WD?

Whats the situation with the WD RAID issues and the TLER? Do I have to plug the HDs directly into the on-board SATA connectors to turn it on in the BIOS and then plug the HDs onto the SAS-SATA splitter?
 
Looks like you got the idea, I did the same with some laptop WD drives I threw in a RAID5. Use em in non raid on the mobo to turn it on then you can put them on the Perc.
 
Time for an update....This is all in an system that have yet to have an OS installed

So I turned on TLER Read/Write for all 3 of my WD 640GBs HD's to 7 secs...
BIOS recognized Perc 5/i automatically....
Build a RAID 5 array with 8 Virtual Disks....(20GB adaptive, 32k stripe, for XP Pro, 20GB adaptive, 32k stripe for XP Programs, 30GB adaptive, 32k stripe for Vista dual boot, 30GB adaptive 32k stripe for Vista Programs, 8GB read,16k stripe for Documents, 160GB adaptive 64k for Data and Pics, 300GB adaptive 64k for Games, and 650GB read 128k stripe for Media).....Anything wrong here?

Everytime I try to install the OS, I cannot even reach the partition page as I always get the message saying windows cannot find any hard drive...My XP disk probably didn't have the necessary Dell Perc 5/i drivers for it so I slipstreamed both the Dell and LSI drivers onto the installation disk just to be on the safe side. However, I am still repeatedly getting the error that my arrays could not be found...

I have been stumped on this for about 1 or 2 days...

Also, Do I need to make seperate partitions for things like games and docs and programs if I make a dual boot? (I.E.- do I need to make a seperate partition for XP programs and games and a seperate partition for VIsta programs and games)

Should I just delete the 2 seperate partitions for each OS and just make one full 50GB adaptive 32k stripe partition for BOTH XP and Vista Programs?
 
I just got my Perc 5/i a few days ago.
Had to do the "Tape mod" for it to work on my Abit IP-35 Pro... but that was easy.

Got the firmware updated ..and upgraded the Ram to 512MB ... all is good so far..
I also purchased 2 x Adaptec cables listed a few posts ago.

I had not purchased any drives for the array as of yet.

What is the recommended drives for a 6 Drive Raid 5 setup.

I saw some discussion about the WD drives & TLER ...

Are we staying stay away .. or just make sure to enable this feature?

Depends on what you are going to do with your RAID 5 array?
If you wanna go all out, I suggest running an 8 drive Samsung F1 1TB RAID 5 array...

The thing about WD drives is the error recovery time is 0 secs at stock, giving the possibility of the drive dropping off the array. TLER is to enable read/write recovery time to 7 secs to give your RAID more time to recover just in case,...If you are going with WD, get some WD 640GB AAKS, and if you need, PM me and I'll send you the files and instructions to enable TLER

Hey man, I did some looking and if the slipstreamed OS disk you made didn't work then you have to have a floppy. At least that's how I understand it...

I mean if you need a floppy drive/disk I can send you one... I have like a box full at work.

Also are you using XP 32 bit? If so I can try to link you to the right drivers needed and provide firmware as well.

I don't know if I have the right drivers and firmware...like I said earlier, I used the XP Pro drivers for the PowerEdge 2950 line

I tried to install the 05 or 07 revision firmware but I could not get it to flash.

I was thinking of just using XP x32 because I couldn't find the drivers for XP Pro x64 bit...I would love it if I could use all 8GB of my memory...If you could provide the firmware files for both the current Dell and LSI firmware it would be sweet...

P.S. I would love to have a floppy drive to borrow temporarily
 
I'll dig up all the drivers and firmware I have on file, I will also grab a floppy drive from work along with a spare disk.

I'll PM you most likely sometime tomorrow.
 
I actually just need a spare floppy drive, I have plenty of floppy disk...

I was gonna buy an external floppy drive but I have heard it would not help on something like this...
 
External floppies work fine for Windows installs on modern mobos, Windows thinks it is a real internal one.

So after a week or two of trying to figure this out, I decided to borrow an external floppy drive...

It boots from the CD and tries to install XP...

Even though I tried to slipstream the correct drivers, I still decided to create a floppy drive disk...

It recognizes the drivers and uses the drivers...However, right before it gets the the start of the installation, I get a blue screen error...!

This is so frustratiing...

EDIT: So I can finally install XP on my VD's but after creating a partition I am unable to install because the partition is incompatible. How can I create a NTFS partition?
