My buddy at work picked up an e521, Athlon x2 3800+, 1GB DDR2, 160GB SATA, SATA DVD burner, GF7300LE turbocache, Media Center 2005, $359 refurbished. A few days ago.

Nope you will have to go to http://www.dell.ca/ as the software loaded is lisenced to the US only. Went through that is the past when I purchased a lappy for a cousin and they made me return it so they can ship a "canadian" one from Canda.

There's no reason you can't ship it to Canada. In fact, there is a part of the sales form that you specifically fill out if you plan to export the computer.

All you need is someone south of the border to reship it.

in fact, if you read their warranties they aren't limited to the U.S., they say "U.S. and Canada", anyone happen to know if a U.S. purchase will be serviced at Canadian Warranty centers?

Edit: Here we go, from Dell's resale contract agreement. I have a feeling you didn't fill in the "I plan to export this computer." form when you bought the laptop and as such ended up with the no-for-resale agreement, which forbids export. (Not that they could really stop you if they wanted to.)

Export. I recently picked up one of the 20" Dell Laptops (XPS M2010) from Dell Outlet for work. Got it for $2000 bucks...pretty good deal for one of those beasts. We needed it for trade shows / presentations ... but in the offtime it serves as my desktop as well.

Now I'm looking at the desktops you guys are talking about and I have a quick question...does dell do anything wacky to the motherboards or use really cheap mobo's? I'm just worried about buying from them and not being able to upgrade the Ram and Vid card easily. Yeah...I don't really trust Dell...

Plus, I don't know the differnce in their lines that well but is there a particular case type they make that is better than the others? I would assume the XPS cases are good but none of those are going cheap. Any recomendations?

The E5xx desktops I've worked on have all used standard connections. You can throw anything you want at it; they include a PCI-e x16 slot but you'll need to use a couple splitters and the Molex->PCI-e power connector for a card that needs one (which worked fine for the 7800GT I tried it with). The only thing you can't do (at least with the Intel E510) is put in a processor Dell intended for another class -- I tried to put in a Pentium D before they started selling them with a D-class processor, and got a nice "CPU Incompatible" message. :D
