Dell Lattitude E5510 vs E5500

Our field engineers require the Dell Lattitude E5510 and E5500 series because they have a serial port and a pcmcia slot for connecting to PLCs.


Did I noticeably downgrade them when I chose the E5510 with a core3duo @ 2.40 HZ, over the same E5500 running a Core2Duo at 2.53 HZ?
 
Nope. Core i3 is newer than the Core 2 Duo. I just got my new laptop at work (Latitude E6510) to replace my old Latitude D505. I will miss the serial port but I'm glad most of the PLCs I mess with these days use an ethernet interface for programming.

I'm finding the bigger issue is Windows 7 support with all of the software/drivers.

seimens is supposed to have win7 x64 support in the next few months. Also, all of our win 7 purchases come with downgrade rights.
 
Wouldn't a rs232 to USB adapter work for this? I don't have any personal experience with it as the only PLC stuff I have done in the last few years had RJ45 or USB connectors.

They have usb to rs232 adapters, but its more like they are in a remote rig on a crane some place, its better to just have it directly connected.
