Hi,

Just wondering on what people think: currently, the price difference in Australia between the 24" and the 27" is $500 AUD.

Is an extra 3" worth an extra $500?

My monitor will be primarily used for watching movies, word processing, internet browsing and the occasional gaming (WoW).

Thanks in advance!!

No, the price difference between the 2707 and the 2407 is not worth it, but the difference between the 22 and the 24 is because the resolution on the 24 is bigger than the res on the 22. But the res on the 27 is the same on the 24. Movies will be fine on the 24 will be great as it can run 1080p native. Now the price difference between the 2407 and the 3007 is definitely worth it.

Fair Enough,

But I have read reviews on here which think the 2560x1600 is too high for pretty much most computers and games and is bad for movies.

Also, in Australia the price difference between a 27" and 30" is the one grand!!

24" 1,099
27" 1,599
30" 2,599 (usually a bit lower)

Just some thoughts.

It will stretch the movie to get fullscreen, which isn't so great, but if your computer can handle gaming at that resolution, its worth the money. Most computers can't however, so go with the 2407.

I've just taken delivery of a 2707 and I think I'll be keeping it. A friend lent me his 2407 so I could compare the two, and for movies there's no contest - apart from the extra 3", which makes a surprisingly big difference in practice, colours seem more natural in the 2707 and the blacks in particular are noticeably better. HD material is pretty good in both, but downloaded low-res DivXs are predictably crap - the bigger 2707 allows you to sit further back though and it doesn't seem quite as bad.

Motion blur is about as good as you'll find in an LCD in both screens - it's there if you look for it, but the annoyance factor largely depends on how sensitive you are as an individual.

I'm not a gamer, so I can't really comment on that aspect. My kids definitely give the thumbs-up to the 2707 though. :)

For desktop work, the 2707's pixel pitch of .303" is a complete non-issue from a distance of 2ft or more, at least for me (my eyesight is good enough with glasses), and my GF who has 20-20 vision has no complaints either. If you have enough room (and a decent chair), you can adopt the relaxed and laid-back attitude, which makes for an all-round nicer experience.

Perhaps less importantly, the 2707 looks like a much classier piece of kit - the 2407's stand seems cheap and flimsy in comparison, and the 2707's aluminium bezel, which I thought I'd dislike, looks fantastic.

Here in the UK, the 2707 is on special offer from Dell at 780GBP at the moment, whereas the 2407 (rev. A04) can be found for less than 500 if you shop around. FWIW, I think the 2707 is worth the extra at those prices, although the usual rip-off Britain price of >1000GBP for the 2707 would probably make me think twice.

Hope this helps a bit. :)

/edit: I've just noticed I seem to be parroting some of what was said here, but my observations are all my own... :D

3 inches is a pretty substantial difference. Plus, you seem to be comparing "street price" for the 24 to MSRP for the 27. It's more like a 300$ difference.

Cheers for info guys,

I personally was starting to lean towards the 2707, and it does indeed look very cool and sleek.

I am going to wait a couple for weeks and when I decide i'll let you guys know!

Please keep the opinions coming!

Thanks.

Too bad the price on 2707 is nearly double that of 2407 in the U.S. For the relative prices you were quoting in AU, I'd definately be going with the 2707.

Yeah I hope it does!

Also, I believe Apple will be upgrading their ACD range soon, so I might see what they offer as well. At worst it will at least perhaps drop the price of the Dell range.

I expect the 2707 to drop at least a couple hundred bucks in the next month or so.

You mean when the Sammy 275T hits retail,or just after it does ? The Dell should drop a bit.But between the 275T and the 2707,I would go with the Samsung. As it will be cheaper
and to me looks a bit better style wise... (I really do like the minimal desgin choice that Samsung have taken...) I would most certainly save a little bit longer, and grab the 27" of the two you want.Good luck whatever you decide ! :)

Thanks for your responses!!

I think I will wait out a month or so and see the price changes and if Apple do bring out anything.

I think I am leaning towards the 2707. Let you know soon.

Cheers.

The soonest apple will probably formally bring something out would be WWDC in June, but they might just add it to the store.

Hi Chaps,

Brit back from his holidays in the good ol USA, had a great time and will defo come again. I'm on extended leave due to a nice dose of pox, teach me to have a good time with a hooker in LA Ha-ha: P

Apart from having my DNA and fingerprints taken, cant wait till we start doing this to you lot on visits to euro land :) (Bloody evil grin btw)

I run 2405 and 2707, not quite what your asking, but close enough I think.
biggest gripe with 2707 it just does not rise high enough to cover my creative speakers also the bugger does not rotate so no easy install of cables once in position. install all ya cables before you place this on ya desktop.

Is it worth 300 quid more than 2405/2407 answers YES
I was tempted with the 30 inch one but with no option for svga and component no good for my xbox360 and pioneer DVD.

On my MAC it's sweet on pc not so good unless you get rid of clear type, text looks blocky

Most of my xvids look kinda washed out not as sharp maybe due to higher dot pitch, as a gaming monitor the extra 3inch is worth it. Same rez as my 2405 but on the larger screen it's more in ya face. (as the little lady once said it's not the size...like we believe what she says :)

I think Dell is going to lower price on 2707 very soon.
I heard Dell is doing promotions in Korea and Hong Kong for around $1000 and include a free sound bar /w every 2707.

Thanks for those replies!

I do use a MAC so the text should pretty cool! Well I guess I'll wait for a bit for price drop then pull the trigger on the 2707!

Cheers

Are you sure about this? Here is a direct quote from Dell's website:

"The sturdy stand, with adjustable height and swivel, is paired with a flexible panel tilt for simple customization."

This would seem to indicate that it does indeed rotate. Can anyone confirm this?

My 2707 (that I just received yesterday) does not rotate to portrait mode. Unless I'm missing something completely obvious.

Odd that the flash animation on that page shows it rotating.

So how do you like it so far? Any issues with the larger dot pitch?

Absolutely love it.

The dot pitch was my only concern going in but I'm surprised (rather shocked actually) that everything seems just as crisp as it was on my 2405. Everything is obviously just a tad larger.

The looks of the outer shell are just f'n gorgeous - the brushed aluminum, shiny black base, chrome accents. Stand is awesome - you can easily swivel and elevate the screen with just a finger.

Someone mentioned it does have a blue tint to it out of the box. Mine is noticeably blue also. I do graphics for a living so I gotta go get a calibrator soon.

Price is too high, of course. But I got tired of waiting for the Samsung 275T (it will probably be released tomorrow with my luck :( ). I sold a bunch of crap on eBay to pad the price so it feels like I got it on sale! :D No regrets here.

Thanks for your opinions.

Quick question. How do movies look? Secondly, if you play any games, any lag or ghosting or anything?

Cheers!

Movies look a little more blurry because of the pp if sitting up close (like I was with the 2405). But not a deal breaker.

I'm finding I have to sit back a little further just because of the size of the screen.

Not a gamer so maybe someone else can comment on this.

I've experienced the 2407, 2707 and 3007-HC and the 2707 is by far and away my favorite of the bunch and it's #1 goal for me is for gaming. Extremely pleased with the color consistency, backlight consistency, black levels, performance and the overall look of the monitor. It's worth every penny based on my experiences with the 2407 and 3007-HC.

Yeah I totally agree! :D

I couldn't agree more. Admittedly I've never seen a 3007-HC, but the 2707WFP is absolutely the nearest to the mythical "perfect" LCD display I've ever seen.

To anyone who might be put off by the relatively high pixel pitch (actually hardly any different from a 19" 1280x1024), all I can say is, unless you habitually have your nose pressed up against the screen it's completely irrelevant.

I've been expecting a bad case of buyer's remorse to set in, given the 300GBP I could have saved by getting a 2407, but I instead I just get a nice warm glow every time I look at the thing. One of the few decent decisions I've made lately...

Agreed.

Stinks that this Dell 27" is the first to come out and you can't go to a local store and see for yourself.

Wow. I am now totally convinced to buy the 2707 :)

Just now got to wait for the price drop :(

Question for people with the 2707: what type of warranty protection cover plan did you use?

Cheers

WIth the display completely perpendicular to the desk, it's between 9 and 10 inches from the front bezel of the display to the back part of the stand(including the stem of the base that is just past the bottom base. The width of the bezel of the display is just under 25". The thickness of the panel itself is about 3 1/2". I haven't noticed any color shifting across lighter, darker and mid-range background scenes and the viewing angle is quite nice on both sides in terms of being able to read text and the display maintaining its consistency.

Standard Dell 3 year warranty.

TheCrimsonCrusader: Thank you sir! Finally someone answers my questions. :D

But actually I wanted to know the minimum depth required to put the display. So if you can measure from the bezel to the back of the base, that would be more helpful. I don't mind the arm/stem sticking out...it can stick out 6" and it won't be a problem. Thanks again!
