I'm in the market for a new LCD, trying to keep it under $300 CAD. My limited search so far has turned up the Dell 1707FP which looks to lead the pack in price/performance. Have there been any major problems with this model and are there any other options around this price I may be missing?

I've checked some Samsung Models which seem good but don't have a DVI input, as well as some Sony models that seem quite a bit more expensive than the Dell. I'm basically looking for best overall picture quality and colour accuracy, fast response times don't really bother me as long as it's under 20ms.

My plan is to go cheap this round and then invest in a better widescreen or 20" display once HDCP becomes common-place. I may still go for a 1905FP if I can find one on ebay that will ship to Canada for a resonable amount.

I own the 1905FP, and was interested to see how it stacked up against a 1907FP myself. I had a friend who recently got a new Dell that came with the 1907FP, so I ran them side by side in a 2056x1024 resolution to compare. I have to admit, I don't have the most keen eye for these things, but here are some impressions that I got:

1) The most noticable difference between the two are the view angles. The 1905FP has basically perfect view angles. It doesn't distort or change color at all, no matter where you look at it from. The 1907FP has much more narrow view angles. This isn't a problem if you look at it straight on 100% of the time, but having the two side by side, I have to say the narrow angles of the 1907 bothered me after a while compared to the 1905.

2) Contrast. Both monitors seemed very good with the contrast ratios, but the 1905FP definitally seemed to fair better.

3) Overall image quality. This is a tricky one for me, but the 1907FP seemed to have a bit sharper of an image. Again, I don't have a good eye for these things, and it could have just been a matter of different settings on the monitor, but the 1907 just seemed to have a bit better overall image quality.

4) Response time. This should be a no-brainer, given the specs, but I didn't really notice any ghosting with either monitor. I ran Oblivion in 2056x1024 using both monitors side by side, and really couldn't notice a difference in response. They both seemed quick enough, but again, others would probably call me crazy.

That's just my .02

Thanks for posting your comparison. People seem to really blast the 1907 for having a lesser quality panel than the 1905 but I suppose the differences are blown out of proportion. Cnet reviewed if fairly well so I suppose the 1707/1907 perform well, I guess I just have to decide how valuable a warranty is compared to better viewing angles and colour accuracy (if I would even notice what I'm missing, hard to say).

Panel types general rated as IPS best, VA tech next and TN last.

The new Dell 1907 and 1707 are TN. Almost all 17" and 19" panels are TN these days. They are the cheapest to build.
