Delima....iPhone vs. Pre

only problem is the hero got hammered in reviews.

To sum it up, the hardware isnt up to snuff with the software..
Its not terrible, but just not as good as many people hope.
 
I have an iphone 3g as does my son. My son dropped his iPhone from waist high and it broke. Thankfully Apple replaced it. Recently a co-worker purchased a Pre and handed it to me. While grabbing it and trying to "flick" it open I flung it accross the room about 8 feet away and about 6 feet off the ground. What an awful sound that made.....well I picked it up and the wasn't so much as a scratch on it.
The Pre is soooo much more durable than the iPhone.
 
Bwahahahha! That things a happy meal toy. Pure luck that the pre survived. Mine would reset if it fell from the couch to the carpet. Also, it sound like the iPhone did the vertical dive and the pre did the horizontal slide. One of those is FAR friendlier to a device than the other.

That said, I've seen a Storm fall 6 ft and land perpendicular on a hard floor. It got up and laughed at me, no lie.

Did your son have any sort of case or silicone sleeve on it? Personally I think Apple's build quality is often overstated (just because it feels solid doesn't mean it's any tougher than other smartphones people!) but I still think the iPhone/iPod touch are pretty tough... The screen is really hard to scratch and I've dropped my touch probably two or three times from a similar distance and it doesn't bear a single scar.

I have one of those Belkin silicone sleeves, I think it absorbs a lot of the shock of impact despite how thin it is, and it feels a lot less slippery in my hand with it as well... Looks better as well too if you ask me, the only sort of downside is that when I wear semi-tight dress pants it tends to stick to the inside of my pocket making it harder to slip out... But that's also an upside in jeans w/larger pockets so it doesn't roll around (or roll on it's side) while inside the pocket.

As far as the Pre... I believe I saw an article that states they recently made some improvements in the battery compartment area (added a strip of foam or something) that mitigates those resets mentioned above... Apparently the battery didn't fit as snug as it should.

This is true. They added a bit of padding in the compartment. However, the change that really fixed this problem was with the battery. It's a little bigger now. Most folks with older Pre's and the reset problem have had no issues after getting their batteries replaced for the new one.

Anyway. I've been a Pre owner for a month now. I really really really love this phone. Mainly because of WebOS and it's wonderful multitasking capabilities (yeah, it slows things down when you're doing it, but that doesn't bother me), but also because of the hardware design. Though I certainly wont disagree that it feels cheap. My slider has loosened up a bit since I got it. I got a Seidio Innocase on it and now it feels much more solid. Not iPhone solid mind you, but still a big improvement.
 
I just bought the Pre yesterday. What an amazing device. battery life could be a little better, and I wasn't convinced I'd be able to use the small keyboard, but here I am one day later loving the thing. Got my homebrew apps working and the device is really, really slick.

I was going to wait for the Hero, but I decided to go ahead and just get the Pre. Glad I did, because I didn't know what I was missing.
 
I just want to comment that I am another pre owner, have had the device since June, really reallty nice. Love the webOS. Coming from an iPhone and touch pro. I like the pre the best hands down. The multi-tasking, plus, sprints data network is really fast. My could load nationalgeographic.com quite a bit faster on my pre than my cousin on his 3GS, results may vary, but we both had great signals.
 
My $0.02...I would go for the iphone.

I just picked up an iphone over the weekend and have been loving it. I haven't had a whole lot of exp with the Pre other than playing with it in the store.

I just love the number of apps that are available with the iphone. It's kinda like the MAC vs Windows comparison. the iphone is like the best of both worlds. You have a limitless choice of apps like Windows has with the polish and stability of a MAC.

The cost to add a data plan was my only main concern. I get a corporate discount that drops the data down to $25/mon but even at $30 it's manageable. all I had to do was drop a spare World of warcraft account and axe my netflix subscription (red box $1 rentals have replaced it)

Fixed. ;) I think the iPhone's great, but it's definitely not for everybody, no smartphone will ever be, but the iPhone can be one of the most polarizing phones out there as far as user base goes imo... Which might ultimately mean it ends up exactly as the Mac of smartphones; the early introduction of a few key features along w/the app store are what's pushing it forward atm and keeping it safe from that fate.
 
For 4 days I attempted to use the Pre's keyboard, but as each passing day came to a close, my digits, hands, and arms ached more and more. Did anyone else experience that? For reference my thumb takes up 4 keys.
 
Fat fingers will definitely kill the usability of that tiny keyboard... Do you find some of the other physical vertical keyboards (BB/Nokia) noticeably more comfortable to type on than the Pre?
 
Yes, the Tour proved much more relaxed on my thumbs. Although even that took it's toll on my thumbs. In truth, I think I'm best off w/ a landscape style qwerty. I have since given up on my Tour (build quality, trackball, screen ripple, sound quality issue) and gone back to my Moto Razr. We'll see what this Sholes device has to offer. :D
 
Main reason I returned my pre besides hating sprint was it just felt awkward to hold in one hand with it opened, when it was opened it was really top heavy so trying to type one handed sucked, and even with two hands it still is top heavy. didn't like it one bit.
 
I had an iphone 3g for a whole year and just bought a pre yesterday, in my opinion the pre is a far superior phone. My iphone has shit coverage, drops calls all the time, and google maps dont work in downtown san diego -_-

The pre alleviated all these woes and its a better os. I love being able to multitask. LOVE IT.

Agreed. It always felt like I was typing on too thin a back...it just felt cheap and awkward to hold. Not to mention I couldn't type for crap wo/ getting pains all over my hands and arms. I love the way the OS sort of floats and feels so next gen, more so than my iPod touch. But there were just too many issues w/ the hardware for me to keep. Not a bad first try though, and clearly others don't seem to mind.
 
iPhone has been proven to be popular so people will alway develope stuff for it. The pre is new so unless it's gets popular there won't be much apps or third party stuff for it. I want to see a company out do the iPhone but untill then I am sticking with the iPhone.
 
WebOS will gain traction and is poised to be a strong player. I look forward to seeing WinMo, RIM, Android, WebOS, and Apple battle it out.

I think with Palm not stopping or slowing the homebrew community out it'll really take off, there's way more home brew apps than there is out in the app catalog. I think that since Palm doesn't really have it's api's finalized or the app store out of beta it's hard to judge how apps will go. But looking at the community they thriving pretty well and it looks like it's going to keep gaining traction. I think it'll be another year though before the api's are really opened up and finished, until then the homebrew people will be around
 
I did like the Pre when i played with it, the physical keys were to small for me personally, but the multitasking did look spectacular. I do love my iPhone though.

Supposedly (take it for what its worth), Palm is being much more careful about trying to uphold the quality of apps in its store. We will see how that actually turns out.
 
I've been using Android since it's launch, and I think the WebOS is highly superior. The only thing I miss occasionally is the widgets.

The android market is great, but there's only 30 or so apps that are worth a damn.
 
Yeah, I didn't give any credence to the app store until the touch came into my life. There are simply a wealth of really good and cool apps out there. 2 of them are even useful! What can I say, my touch is dominated by games, GAMES!!

I wish AT&T had better coverage out here so I could be an iPhone groupie. :)
 
Apps are definitely shaping phones. I dislike Apple genuinely (borderline hate) for their business practices, but their iPhone app selection is just unbeatable. Of course the iPhone has had a head start, but I don't want to wait months or years for the rest (Android, Palm, etc.) to catch up.
 
I think apple is too closed for it to really make it. If they opened up their stuff a bit more i think that would really help them out but would also help everyone else out which might not be good for apple.

Pre has some 271 apps homebrew and not sure on the app catalog how many they have, but that's quite a few for a phone that's app store is still in beta.

Yeah...unbatable...just ask the Google folks about Apple turning down Google Voice, etc ;)

I can't wait for Apple to start getting sued.

Dude, you just don't get it. It's only monopolistic if you bundle an internet browser with your OS, and STILL ALLOW others to be installed on top of that one. If you completely close out any competition and actively reject competing products/programs on your platform, that's perfectly legit. Steve Jobs has deemed it so.
